Chapter 1

The scent of blood—my blood—had dried into my uniform as I raced through the forest before dawn. My wolf, Silver, was restless beneath my skin, her instincts sharp as we tracked the movements of the Red Claw Pack along our eastern border. They'd been encroaching for weeks, testing our defenses, looking for weakness.

"They're planning to move tonight," I whispered to Silver as I crouched behind a fallen oak, watching their scouts marking trees barely fifty yards into what should be our territory. "Three units, coming from the ravine."

*We should attack now,* Silver urged, her voice a low growl in my mind. *While they're scattered.*

I shook my head, forcing my breathing to steady despite the adrenaline coursing through me. "We need the pack. We'll report back."

The Red Claw scout lifted his head suddenly, scenting the air. I froze, pressing my body against the damp earth. Too late. He'd caught my scent.

I barely had time to shift before he was on me, his massive brown wolf lunging with teeth bared. Silver took over instinctively, our body transforming in a blur of pain and power. My bones cracked and reformed, fur erupting across my skin as I met his attack with a snarl.

His claws raked down my flank, tearing through muscle. The pain was white-hot, but Silver didn't falter. We'd been the pack's strongest warrior for seven years—this wasn't our first blood.

I caught him by the throat, my jaws clamping down until I tasted copper. He yelped, thrashing wildly, but I held firm until he went limp in submission. I released him with a warning growl, watching as he retreated with his tail tucked between his legs.

*We need to move,* Silver urged. *Others will come.*

Blood matted my silver fur as I raced back toward Silverfang territory, the intelligence I'd gathered worth every drop spilled. By the time I reached our borders, the sun was breaking over the mountains, casting long shadows through the trees.

---

"The Red Claw Pack is planning a three-pronged attack tonight," I reported, standing at attention before Ryan in the mid-morning pack meeting. My wounds had been hastily bandaged, but I could feel blood seeping through the gauze, staining my fresh uniform. "They'll come through the ravine, trying to claim the hunting grounds on the eastern ridge."

Ryan leaned forward in his Alpha chair, his dark eyes calculating. Even after seven years as his mate, the sight of him still made my heart stutter—the sharp angles of his jaw, the confident set of his shoulders. I lived for those rare moments when his gaze would soften for me, when I'd earned his approval.

"How many?" he asked, his voice carrying across the great hall where our pack members had gathered.

"At least thirty warriors, split into three units," I replied. "If we position our forces at these points—" I stepped forward, indicating locations on the territory map spread across the table, "—we can cut them off before they reach the ridge."

Ryan studied the map, then nodded. "Lucas," he called to my second-in-command, "prepare the warriors. We attack at dusk."

Lucas nodded, his expression grim but determined. "Yes, Alpha."

As the meeting concluded and pack members began to disperse, Ryan approached me. My pulse quickened. This was it—recognition for the intelligence I'd risked my life to gather.

"Madison," he said, his voice lower now. From his pocket, he withdrew a single flower—a wolfsbane blossom, its purple petals already wilting at the edges.

I stared at it, something cold settling in my stomach as he pressed it into my palm.

"Thank you for your service to the pack," he said, his tone formal, distant. Then he turned away, already calling for his Beta to discuss strategy.

I stood frozen, the pathetic flower limp in my hand. Around me, pack members exchanged glances, a few whispers reaching my ears.

"...just a wolfsbane? After what she did?"

"...bleeding through her uniform..."

"...seven years as his mate..."

Silver stirred uneasily within me. *Something isn't right,* she whispered. *He smells different lately. Like...*

"Like what?" I murmured, too quietly for anyone to hear.

*Like he's hiding something,* Silver replied. *Something important.*

I tucked the wilted flower into my pocket, ignoring the ache that had nothing to do with my physical wounds. "He's just focused on the territory," I assured her, and myself. "Once we secure the eastern ridge, things will be better."

But as I headed to prepare for battle, the whispers followed me, and Silver's restlessness grew stronger with each step.

---

The battle was swift and decisive. With my intelligence, we positioned our warriors perfectly, ambushing the Red Claw Pack before they could establish a foothold. By nightfall, we'd secured not just our existing territory but expanded our claim to include valuable hunting grounds worth millions in pack economy.

I should have felt triumphant as we returned to the great den, our warriors celebrating our victory. Instead, exhaustion weighed on me, my bandages now soaked through with fresh blood from the fighting.

"You should see the healer," Lucas suggested, concern evident in his eyes.

I shook my head. "After the ceremony. Ryan said there would be an announcement tonight."

The great den had been transformed in our absence. Thousands of moonflowers—rare, expensive blooms that only open under the full moon—filled the space with their intoxicating scent. My heart lifted. Perhaps this was Ryan's true thanks—a public recognition of our mate bond and my contribution to the pack.

The crowd parted as Ryan entered, but it wasn't me he sought with his eyes. Behind him walked Brittany Walsh, an Omega who'd recently been elevated to Beta status despite her notoriously weak wolf. She was beautiful in a delicate way, her blonde hair cascading over shoulders draped in a ceremonial white cloth.

"Tonight," Ryan's voice boomed across the den, "we celebrate not just our victory, but a new beginning for our pack."

He turned to Brittany, who smiled up at him with adoration that made my stomach twist. With deliberate slowness, he lowered his mouth to her neck, his eyes finding mine in the crowd as his teeth sank into her flesh, marking her with the mating bite.

The room spun around me as he placed a circlet of moonflowers—9,999 of them, I would later learn, costing over $150,000—upon her head.

"I present to you," Ryan announced, his arm around Brittany's waist, "my chosen Luna."
