Chapter 3

I woke to the scent of roses and vanilla—Sarah's signature fragrance—so strong it felt like she was standing over my bed. My eyes flew open, heart hammering against my ribs as I bolted upright, scanning the shadows of my chamber. Empty. But the scent remained, heavy and intrusive in the pre-dawn darkness.

Slowly, I swung my legs over the edge of the bed, wincing as my still-healing leg protested. The break should have mended days ago, but like everything else about me, it remained stubbornly broken. I reached for the lamp on my nightstand and froze.

My fingers brushed against something wet. In the dim moonlight filtering through the curtains, I could make out a small puddle of oil—Sarah's Luna oil—deliberately poured across my personal belongings. The crystal figurine my grandmother had given me lay on its side, soaking in the fragrant liquid.

My heart stuttered as I looked around the room. My clothes had been pulled from drawers, books scattered across the floor, and there—on the mirror—words written in the same oil: "PHANTOM."

She had been here. In my room. While I slept.

I limped to the bathroom, my hands shaking as I splashed cold water on my face. The woman in the mirror looked haunted—dark circles under hollow eyes, cheekbones too sharp from months of barely eating. I hardly recognized myself anymore.

"You're not going crazy," I whispered to my reflection. "She was here."

Two hours later, I stood in Marcus's study, my leg throbbing as he circled me like a predator.

"Let me understand," he said, his voice dangerously soft. "You're claiming that Sarah—who everyone saw at the Silvercrest gathering last night—somehow managed to sneak into our heavily guarded pack house, vandalize your room, and disappear without a single guard noticing?"

"I know how it sounds," I said, fighting to keep my voice steady. "But the scent—"

"The scent you've been obsessed with since she returned?" Marcus cut in, stopping directly in front of me. "The same scent you've been hallucinating for days?"

"I'm not hallucinating," I insisted, my hands curling into fists at my sides.

Marcus's expression softened into something worse than anger—pity, performed for the benefit of the Beta and healer standing nearby. "Elena, your wolf is sick. Healer Anya confirmed it. These... delusions are symptoms of your condition."

"They're not—"

"ENOUGH!" His Alpha tone slammed into me, making my knees buckle. "I won't have my Luna spreading paranoid fantasies through the pack. You will rest, and you will stop this nonsense immediately."

I looked to Anya, silently pleading for support, but she averted her eyes. The Beta shifted uncomfortably but remained silent. No one would contradict their Alpha.

"Yes, Alpha," I whispered, the words bitter on my tongue.

As I limped back to my vandalized room, I knew with cold certainty that I needed proof—evidence no one could dismiss.

The ancient oak stood at the very edge of Shadowmoon territory, its massive trunk split down the middle by lightning decades ago. I'd chosen it carefully—far enough from pack patrols but still technically within our borders. My leg protested with each step through the underbrush, but I pushed forward, checking my watch nervously.

A shadow detached itself from the darkness, and I tensed, my wolf stirring weakly within me.

"You're the phantom Luna," a rough voice stated. Not a question.

The man who stepped into the moonlight was lean and hard, with scars crisscrossing his face and arms—marks of a life lived outside pack protection. Vex, the infamous rogue tracker whose services came at a steep price.

"I prefer Elena," I replied, keeping my distance.

His nostrils flared as he scented me. "You smell wrong. Wolf's dying."

I flinched at his bluntness. "That's not what I'm paying you for."

Vex shrugged, leaning against the split oak. "Got what you asked for. Searched the site of the supposed rogue attack five years ago. No body was ever recovered. Not even blood evidence beyond the initial attack scene."

My breath caught. "And Silvercrest?"

"More interesting." His eyes gleamed in the darkness. "No arrival records for Sarah Matthews. The Luna mark she bears? Surgically inserted, not a true bond. Powerful magic involved—expensive magic."

"She's not really Luna of Silvercrest," I whispered, pieces clicking into place.

"She's playing a long game," Vex confirmed. "Question is—what's the endgame?"

I handed him an envelope thick with cash. "Keep digging. I need to know everything."

As Vex melted back into the shadows, I stood alone under the ancient oak, my mind racing. Sarah wasn't just alive—she was executing an elaborate plan years in the making. And somehow, I was both obstacle and pawn.

The Ravenridge territory healing center smelled of sage and cedar, a welcome change from the antiseptic scent of our pack hospital. David had arranged everything, using his connections to secure me treatment from a neutral healer outside Marcus's influence.

"This will draw out the toxins," the elderly healer murmured, applying steaming herbal poultices to my leg. "Your wolf is retreating, child. We must coax her back."

As the heat penetrated my muscles, something stirred within me—my wolf, raising her head for the first time in weeks. With her awakening came a flash of memory, so vivid it stole my breath: Marcus in his wolf form, silver-gray and massive, meeting another wolf in a moonlit clearing. A wolf with distinctive white markings on her muzzle.

Sarah's wolf.

The memory wasn't mine—it was my wolf's, glimpsed through her eyes during one of our rare night runs months ago.

"They've been meeting in secret," I gasped, my eyes flying open.

David leaned forward, his hand finding mine. "What did you see?"

"Everything," I whispered, as another piece of the puzzle fell into place. "They've been together all along."
