Chapter 1

I stood at the edge of the grand hall, my fingers trembling around the ceremonial silver goblet. Five years of practice had taught me how to move through these events like a ghost—seen but not truly present. The annual inter-pack alliance ceremony was the most important diplomatic event of the year, and as Luna of the Shadowmoon Pack, my role was simple: smile, nod, and reflect well on my Alpha.

My Alpha. The words tasted bitter in my mind. Marcus Sterling was never truly mine, nor I his. The mate mark on my neck burned with phantom pain, a constant reminder of our fraudulent bond.

"Luna Elena," a voice called, pulling me from my thoughts. "The Blackthorn delegation awaits your greeting."

I moved forward, the weight of my ceremonial gown dragging behind me like chains. The visiting Alphas and Lunas stood in a semicircle, their eyes calculating as they assessed me—the famously quiet, submissive Luna of the powerful Shadowmoon Pack.

Luna Isabelle of the Blackthorn Pack extended her hand, her smile not reaching her eyes. "Luna Elena, you grow more... subdued each year."

The implied criticism hung in the air. I opened my mouth to respond when my foot caught on the hem of my gown. I lurched forward, the goblet tipping in my hand. Horror bloomed in my chest as the dark red wine cascaded onto Isabelle's pristine white dress.

Gasps echoed through the hall. Isabelle's eyes widened in shock, then narrowed with fury.

"I'm so sorry," I whispered, reaching for a napkin. "Please, let me—"

"ELENA!"

Marcus's voice cut through the murmurs, his Alpha tone vibrating through my bones. The room fell silent. I froze, recognizing the dangerous edge in his voice—the one reserved for when I'd given him the perfect opportunity to assert his dominance.

"Kneel," he commanded, his voice deceptively soft but carrying to every corner of the silent hall.

I remained standing, something unfamiliar stirring in my chest. Defiance? After five years?

"I said KNEEL." His Alpha tone crashed into me like a physical force, driving me to my knees before the assembled pack leaders.

"Clean Luna Isabelle's gown," he ordered. "With your dress."

The humiliation burned hotter than the mate mark ever had. I heard the pitying murmurs, saw the downcast eyes of those who wouldn't intervene. Using the edge of my own ceremonial gown—a symbol of my Luna status—I dabbed at Isabelle's dress, each movement stripping away another piece of my dignity.

When I finally stood, something had broken inside me. Without a word, I turned and walked from the hall, ignoring Marcus's sharp command to return.

The cool night air hit my face as I burst through the doors into the forest. Tears blurred my vision as I ran, my feet finding the familiar pack run trails. The pain in my chest was unbearable—not from Marcus's rejection, but from five years of slow suffocation.

The shift came without conscious thought, my human form melting away as my brown wolf emerged. Running as a wolf had always been my only freedom, even as I felt my wolf growing weaker each month.

I heard him before I saw him—the heavy footfalls of an Alpha wolf in pursuit. I didn't slow down. For once, I didn't submit.

The massive silver-gray wolf appeared in my peripheral vision, Marcus's eyes glowing with rage. He wasn't just following—he was hunting me. Before I could change direction, he slammed his powerful body into my smaller form.

The impact sent me flying. I heard the sickening crack before I felt it—my front leg snapping under the force of his attack. I collapsed onto the forest floor, a howl of agony tearing from my throat.

Marcus stood over me, his wolf's eyes cold and unforgiving. Then, without a backward glance, he turned and disappeared into the darkness, leaving me broken and alone.

Three days later, I lay in the sterile white bed of the Shadowmoon pack hospital. Healer Anya Petrova's gentle hands examined my still-broken leg—a leg that should have healed within hours for a normal werewolf.

"It's not healing properly," she murmured, concern etching her features.

I stared at the ceiling, the phantom pain of Marcus's mate mark throbbing in time with my heartbeat. "Nothing about me is proper anymore, Anya."

The door to my hospital room swung open. I expected Marcus, come to ensure his Luna maintained the proper story about her "unfortunate accident."

Instead, my blood turned to ice.

Standing in the doorway was a ghost—a face I never thought I'd see again. Sarah Matthews. My sister. The woman whose identity I'd been forced to assume after her supposed death.

But she wasn't a ghost. She was very much alive, her neck bearing the Luna crest of the Silvercrest Pack. Her lips curved into a cold smile that had haunted my nightmares for five years.

"You really thought you could replace me?" she asked, her voice soft with menace.

Anya gasped beside me, her eyes darting between us in confusion.

I couldn't breathe. Couldn't speak. The world I'd been surviving in for five years had just collapsed entirely.

Sarah stepped into the room, closing the door behind her with a soft click that sounded like a death sentence.
