Chapter 2

The Healer's examination room smelled like antiseptic and something herbal I couldn't name. Clean. Clinical. Nothing like the pack infirmary back at Ironvale, where the air always carried a faint undertone of old blood and anxiety.

Dara didn't look up when the Guard brought me in. She was arranging instruments on a metal tray—silver tools, glass vials, strips of white cloth. Her hands moved with the efficiency of someone who'd done this ten thousand times.

"Sit," she said.

I sat.

She turned then, finally looking at me. Not at my face—at my neck. Her gaze locked on the mark wound and stayed there. No flinch. No pity. Just assessment.

"Let me see it."

I tilted my head to the right, exposing the full extent of the damage. The clear fluid had stopped seeping an hour ago, but the skin around the mark was gray. Dead tissue. It didn't hurt anymore, which I knew was worse than pain.

Dara stepped close. Her fingers pressed the edges of the wound—firm, impersonal. I didn't make a sound.

"The bond was severed on one side," she said. Not a question. A statement of fact. "His rejection broke the connection from his end, but your wolf didn't release her claim. The bond-echo is still transmitting."

"Transmitting what?"

"Everything." Dara pulled back, wiping her hands on a cloth. "His rage. His wolf's deterioration. Every emotion he can't control is feeding directly into your mark wound. It's why you're not healing."

I pressed two fingers to the gray skin. Felt nothing. "Can you cut it?"

"No." Dara met my eyes then. Hers were pale gray, almost colorless. "Only your wolf can sever a bond-echo. It has to come from the same source that formed the original claim."

"My wolf is—"

"Weak," Dara finished. "Three years of wolfsbane suppression left her fragile. She erupted at the border because the chemical block was finally gone, but that was adrenaline and survival instinct. She doesn't have the sustained strength to cut a bond-echo yet."

I kept my voice level. "How long?"

"Weeks. Possibly more." She turned back to her tray, selected a small glass bottle filled with something dark green. "In the meantime, this will slow the transmission. It won't stop it, but it'll reduce the intensity."

She handed me the bottle. I took it without looking at the label.

"What can I do?" I asked.

Dara almost smiled. Not quite, but close. "Rest."

"What else?"

The almost-smile disappeared. "That's not a small thing, Princess."

The title landed wrong. I wasn't used to it yet. Wasn't sure I'd ever be.

"I need a map," I said. "Of the compound's running routes."

Dara stared at me for three full seconds. Then she crossed to a desk in the corner, pulled out a folded paper, and handed it over without comment.

I thanked her and left.

My assigned quarters were on the third floor of the main residence building. Large windows. Soft carpet. Furniture that looked like it cost more than everything I'd owned at Ironvale combined. The bed was too big. The silence was too complete.

I sat on the edge of the mattress and unfolded the map.

Someone knocked. One firm rap, then nothing.

"Come in," I said.

Mathew Ashford stepped through the door and closed it behind him. He didn't move further into the room. Just stood there, hands loose at his sides, waiting.

I folded the map and set it on the nightstand.

We looked at each other.

He was tall. Silver-haired. His face carried the kind of stillness that came from decades of making decisions other people had to live with. I could see pieces of my own face in his—the shape of the jaw, the set of the eyes.

I didn't say anything.

Neither did he.

The silence stretched. Not uncomfortable. Just... present.

Finally, I asked the only question that mattered. "Did you know what he was doing to me?"

Mathew didn't hesitate. Didn't soften it. "Yes."

I waited.

"I calculated that extracting you immediately would trigger a succession crisis before your wolf was strong enough to withstand it," he continued. His voice was steady. No deflection. No excuse. "I chose the longer protection. I am not certain it was right."

I held his gaze. Counted to ten inside my head. Watched for any flicker of defensiveness, any attempt to justify the three years I'd spent on my knees scrubbing pack house floors while he watched from a distance.

There was none.

I nodded once. "Leave."

He did.

No argument. No paternal speech about how he'd missed me or how glad he was I was safe now. He just turned and walked out, closing the door quietly behind him.

I noticed that.

Three days later, I stood in the Lycan Council's tribunal chamber.

The room was circular, built from dark stone that absorbed sound. Lycan lords sat in a semicircle of high-backed chairs, all of them watching me with varying degrees of skepticism. Lord Caelum, seated directly across from where I stood, looked like he'd already decided I was a waste of his time.

Mathew sat at the center, elevated slightly above the rest. Harrison Voss stood at his right side—the Beta Commander, I'd learned. Tall. Dark-haired. He hadn't spoken to me yet, but I'd felt his eyes on me twice since I'd entered the room.

I pressed two fingers to my neck. The mark wound pulsed faintly under the pressure. Chase's rage was muted today—the green medicine Dara had given me was working—but it was still there. A low hum of fury just beneath my skin.

Mathew's voice cut through the chamber. "The bloodline claim is invoked."

I stepped forward.

"I, Sylvie Ashford, invoke formal bloodline authority over Ironvale territory." My voice didn't shake. I'd practiced this in my quarters last night until the words felt like bone. "By right of Lycan royal descent and the Moon Goddess's law, I claim jurisdiction over the pack that held me and the Alpha who rejected his fated mate before witnesses."

Lord Caelum leaned forward. "You were raised Omega."

I turned to face him directly. "Yes."

"An Omega cannot command."

"I'm not an Omega." I let my aura surface—just a fraction, just enough. The air in the chamber went still. Two of the younger lords shifted in their seats. Caelum's jaw tightened. "I'm a Lycan Princess who was stolen and suppressed. The difference matters."

Caelum opened his mouth. Closed it. Said nothing.

Mathew's voice rang out, formal and final. "The Council recognizes the claim. Chase Edwards is stripped of his Alpha title and sentenced to exile from all pack territories. The verdict is recorded."

The moment the last word left his mouth, the bond-echo detonated.

Chase's fury hit me like a physical blow—not muted, not reduced, but raw and enormous. A howl of rage that wasn't sound but sensation, tearing through the remnant bond with enough force to split the wound wide open.

I felt my knees give out.

The stone floor came up fast. I hit it hard, and the mark wound on my neck split further—not the clear fluid this time, but blood. Real blood. Hot and fast.

I heard shouting. Footsteps. Someone's hands on my shoulders.

Through the haze of pain, I saw Harrison Voss drop to his knees beside me. His scent hit me for the first time—dark cedar and rain, sharp and immediate.

Mathew's voice, distant: "Get Dara. Now."

The bond-echo pulsed again. Chase's wolf was dying, and he was taking me with him.

I pressed my hand to my neck and felt the blood seep between my fingers.

Not yet, I thought. Not like this.

The world went dark at the edges.

I didn't let go.
