Chapter 2

The notification lit up my phone at two thirty-seven in the afternoon.

I was in the alliance hall reviewing territorial boundary agreements with the Gamma when the she-wolf group chat exploded with activity. Forty-three messages in under a minute. I finished the sentence I was reading, made a note in the margin, and only then picked up my phone.

The image loaded slowly. Lilian Fox's neck. Fresh bite marks—dark, deliberate, positioned exactly where a mate mark would go. The caption beneath read: *Some bonds are stronger than paperwork.*

I stared at the screen. My wolf went very still inside me.

The chat kept scrolling. Shock. Outrage. Careful, diplomatic silence from the she-wolves who understood pack politics well enough not to commit to a side before the dust settled. A few messages defending Lilian—mostly younger wolves, ones who had never seen what Fiona and Evan built from nothing. And then, buried in the noise, a single message from one of the senior she-wolves: *Luna, we stand with you.*

I set the phone face-down on the table.

"Luna?" The Gamma was watching me carefully.

"It's nothing," I said. My voice was perfectly level. "Let's continue."

We finished the review in twenty minutes. I signed off on the updated boundary markers, thanked him for his thoroughness, and walked back to my quarters at the exact pace I always walked—not hurried, not slow. A Luna's composure is a form of armor. I had worn it for ten years. I could wear it a little longer.

Once the door closed behind me, I pulled out my phone again and opened the chat. Read every message. Studied the photo. Lilian had angled it carefully—the marks were vivid, unmistakable, and the background showed just enough of Evan's office that anyone familiar with the pack house would recognize it immediately.

She wanted a reaction. A public confrontation. A visible crack in the Luna's authority that she could leverage into legitimacy.

I took a screenshot. Noted the timestamp. Added it to the encrypted folder on my tablet where I had been compiling documentation for the Lycan Council's pack-separation proceedings. Then I opened my messages to Declan Voss.

*Training session. Tonight. Bring the usual eleven.*

His response came within seconds. *Understood, Luna.*

I set the phone down and walked to the window. The training fields stretched out below, empty in the afternoon light. I could see the warrior barracks in the distance, the alliance hall to the east, the pack house gates that I had walked through ten years ago as a sixteen-year-old girl who thought she had found her forever.

My wolf whimpered. I pressed my hand to the scar on my ribs.

"Not much longer," I whispered.

---

Three days later, the second message arrived.

I was in the middle of a supply inventory review when my phone buzzed. This time I knew better than to open it in company. I excused myself, walked to the nearest empty corridor, and pulled up the chat.

The sonogram loaded first. Standard imaging, early-stage pregnancy, labeled with Lilian's name. Below it, a second photo: her hand resting on a barely-visible curve of belly, Evan's hand covering hers, his fingers spread possessively.

The caption: *The future of Silvercrest grows strong.*

I stopped breathing.

The chat erupted again. This time the fracture lines were sharper. She-wolves who had been diplomatically silent before were now forced to choose—acknowledge the pregnancy and implicitly accept Lilian's claim, or stay silent and risk being seen as disloyal to the Alpha's bloodline. The ones who rallied around me were fewer this time. Louder, more defiant, but fewer.

I closed the chat. Leaned against the wall. Touched the scar.

Lilian knew. She had to know. There was no other explanation for the surgical precision of this attack. She knew I could not carry a child. She knew it was the one wound I had never spoken aloud, the one vulnerability I had buried so deep that even Evan did not fully understand what it cost me.

And she was using it to destroy me publicly.

My wolf snarled. For the first time since the night I watched the security footage, I felt her rage surface—not at Evan, but at the she-wolf who thought she could weaponize the worst night of my life for pack status.

I took a breath. Then another. Let the rage settle back into cold clarity.

Lilian wanted chaos. She wanted me to react, to challenge her, to create a spectacle that would split the pack's loyalty and force Evan to choose sides in front of everyone.

I was not going to give her that.

I pulled out my tablet, opened the secure logistics file I had been building for two weeks, and finalized the last detail: supply caches positioned every fifty miles along the western highway to Moonveil. Fuel. Medical kits. Encrypted communication devices. Everything twelve wolves and one Luna would need for a three-day convoy through neutral territory.

Then I sent a message to the Moonveil Healer confirming the procedure date. The night after the anniversary banquet. No delays.

The reply came within minutes. *Understood. We will be ready.*

I closed the tablet and stared at the empty corridor.

The she-wolf group chat was still exploding with messages. I could feel the pack's attention fracturing, gossip spreading like wildfire, alliances shifting in real time.

Good.

Let them be distracted. Let them watch Lilian's performance and argue about bloodlines and legitimacy and whether a pregnancy changed the rules of a fated bond.

While they were watching her, I would finish what I started.

---

The training session was scheduled for midnight.

I arrived at the private combat ring—the one used for elite warrior drills, far enough from the main barracks that we would not be overheard—and found all twelve wolves already waiting. Declan stood at the front, arms crossed, expression unreadable. The others were arranged in a loose semicircle, silent and attentive.

I did not waste time.

"This is not a standard drill," I said. My voice carried easily across the ring. "What I am about to ask requires a choice. You can walk away now, no questions, no consequences. Or you can stay, and understand that staying means committing to something that will change your place in this pack permanently."

No one moved.

I met each wolf's eyes in turn. Held the silence until it became a question they had to answer.

Declan spoke first. "Luna, wherever you go, I go."

The wolf to his left—Kira, one of my best strategists—nodded. "Same."

One by one, the others followed. Some with words. Some with a single nod. By the time the last wolf confirmed, the decision was made.

I pulled out a tablet and displayed the convoy logistics. "Vehicles staged at the western boundary. Supplies for three days. Communication blackout from the moment we cross Silvercrest's border until we reach Moonveil territory. No contact with anyone still inside the pack. No exceptions."

Declan studied the map. "When?"

"The night of the anniversary banquet," I said. "While the pack is distracted."

Kira's eyes narrowed. "You are not coming back."

It was not a question.

"No," I said. "I am not."

The silence that followed was not shock. It was understanding.

"Assignments," I continued. "Declan, you coordinate vehicle logistics. Kira, communication blackout protocols. The rest of you, supply verification. We leave no trace. No advance warning. The pack wakes up the next morning and we are already gone."

They nodded. Took their assignments. Dispersed into the night with the efficiency of wolves who had trained under my command for years.

Declan stayed behind.

"Luna," he said quietly. "The pack will fracture without you."

"I know," I said.

He studied my face. "You are not doing this to hurt him."

"No," I said. "I am doing this to survive."

He nodded once. Then he left.

I stood alone in the empty training ring, looking up at the sky. The moon was three-quarters full. Bright enough to run by. Bright enough to see clearly.

In five days, I would stand before five hundred wolves and speak the words that would sever the bond the Moon Goddess herself had created.

And then I would walk away from everything I had bled to build.

My wolf stirred. Not in pain this time. In something quieter. Something that felt almost like relief.

I touched the scar on my ribs one last time.

Then I turned and walked back toward the pack house, already gone.
