Chapter 3

The mind-link severed at 9:47 PM on a Tuesday.

I know the exact time because I was staring at my phone when it happened. I'd just pulled into the Black Moon packhouse driveway after leaving the Morris property. The screen showed 9:47. Then the warmth went out.

It wasn't loud. There was no dramatic snap or flash of pain. It was more like someone had quietly turned off a light I'd been living beside my entire life. The ambient hum of family presence—my adoptive father's steady calm, my mother's soft worry, my siblings' distant chatter—just… stopped.

I sat in the car with the engine running and pressed my hand against my chest.

Nothing.

My wolf stirred weakly, searching for the connection. She whined once, a thin sound like wind through a crack. Then she went so quiet I couldn't feel her at all.

I waited for something else. Grief, maybe. Rage. The kind of howling emptiness that should follow losing your family.

Instead, I felt cold clarity.

They had chosen. Genesis's bloodline. The alliance. Their political survival. They had performed the calculation and I had not been the answer.

I turned off the engine and got out of the car.

The packhouse loomed ahead, warm light spilling from the windows. Inside, the alliance gala was winding down. I could hear faint music, the low rumble of conversation. Greyson would be in there somewhere, Genesis beside him, accepting congratulations.

I walked past the main entrance and took the side door that led to the private wing.

No one stopped me. No one even looked.

I climbed the stairs to the Luna suite—my suite, technically, though I hadn't slept there in weeks. The door was unlocked. I stepped inside and closed it behind me.

The room was exactly as I'd left it. My clothes still hung in the closet. My books sat stacked on the bedside table. The silver hairbrush my adoptive mother gave me on my eighteenth birthday still rested on the vanity.

I looked at it all and felt nothing.

I sat down at the small desk by the window and opened my laptop. My hands were steady. My breathing was even.

I typed: *formal rejection protocol werewolf law*.

The search results loaded. I clicked through legal archives, pack council records, old Moon Goddess doctrine texts that had been digitized decades ago. I read for two hours, taking notes in a leather journal I kept locked in the desk drawer.

The protocol was clear. Formal rejection required three elements: the spoken words in the traditional format, physical consent from both parties (a signature or thumbprint), and witnesses or documentation to confirm the bond severance. Once completed, it was irreversible. The bond would scar over permanently. Both wolves would feel the loss, but the rejected party would bear the worst of it—a deep, spiritual wound that never fully healed.

I wrote down the exact wording. Memorized it.

Then I researched wolfsbane.

Small doses caused disorientation and temporary paralysis in werewolves. Larger doses were lethal. But a carefully measured amount—just enough to incapacitate without killing—would leave a wolf conscious but unable to move or resist for roughly thirty minutes.

I closed the laptop and stared out the window.

The bond-mark on my neck sat cold and silent. My wolf was still too quiet, curled somewhere deep inside me where I couldn't quite reach her.

I thought about Greyson's hand on Genesis's back. The way he'd introduced her as his chosen mate without hesitation. The way he'd told me to leave his suite while Tessa's vanilla scent clung to his skin.

I thought about my adoptive father closing the door in my face.

I thought about the silver blade I'd taken at sixteen, the scar low on my abdomen, the womb that would never carry pups because I'd thrown myself between Greyson and a rogue's knife.

I pulled out my phone and texted the pack healer.

*Sable—do you have anything for anxiety? I'm having trouble sleeping.*

Her reply came three minutes later. *Of course, Luna. I'll prepare a mild sedative. Wolfsbane base, very low dose. Safe for regular use.*

*Thank you*, I typed back. *Can I pick it up tomorrow?*

*I'll leave it at the clinic. Just sign the log.*

I set the phone down and opened the journal again.

Over the next week, I would need to collect enough wolfsbane to incapacitate an Alpha. I would need to forge documentation that looked legitimate. I would need Greyson's thumbprint on a rejection form while he was unable to resist.

And I would need to do all of it while performing perfect, submissive compliance—so thoroughly that he stopped watching me entirely.

I picked up a pen and started making lists.

Supplies. Timeline. Contingencies.

My wolf stirred faintly, lifting her head just enough to meet my gaze from the back of my mind.

*Are we really doing this?* she whispered.

I looked down at the journal, at the careful architecture of my escape taking shape in black ink.

"Yes," I said aloud. "We are."

She didn't argue. She just settled back down, waiting.

I stayed at the desk until dawn, writing and planning, while the packhouse slept around me and Greyson lay somewhere in the building with Genesis beside him, completely unaware that the Luna he'd broken was no longer breaking.

She was building.
