Chapter 3

The summons came at eleven in the morning, delivered by the same young enforcer who had driven me back from Oregon. He knocked twice on the service room door and spoke through the gap without opening it fully.

"Alpha Kaden wants you in his study. Now."

I was folding clean linens for Emilia's suite. I set the last towel down with precise corners and stood. "I'll be there in five minutes."

"Now," he repeated.

I walked past him without answering. The corridor to Kaden's private study was one I had walked a hundred times before the rejection — bringing injury reports, discussing supply shortages, reviewing treatment protocols for sick pups. My feet knew the path. My body moved through it like muscle memory, and I hated that my body still remembered.

The study door was half-open. I knocked anyway.

"Come in. Close the door."

I stepped inside. The room smelled like leather and old wood and something underneath that my healer's nose catalogued automatically: elevated cortisol, disrupted sleep chemistry, the faint acidic edge of an aura under sustained stress. Kaden stood by the window, his back to me, hands clasped behind him in the posture he used when he wanted to look commanding.

I closed the door. I stayed near it, the correct Omega distance. I waited.

He turned. His eyes found mine and held. He looked tired. Not physically — his frame was still broad, his posture still straight — but tired in the way that shows around the edges. In the tension at his jaw. In the way he blinked too slowly.

"I wanted to discuss your reintegration into pack duties," he said.

I nodded once. I did not speak. He had not asked me a question.

He crossed to his desk, leaning against the edge of it. Closer now. Close enough that I could see the dead mark on his neck, the skin around it slightly darkened, like a bruise that never quite healed.

"You've been back two weeks," he continued. "Emilia tells me you've been cooperative."

"Yes, Alpha."

He flinched. Just slightly. At the title, maybe. Or at the flatness in my voice when I said it.

"You don't need to call me that when we're alone," he said quietly.

I looked at him. I did not blink. "What would you prefer I call you?"

He didn't answer that. His hand went to his neck instead, pressing the mark. A habitual gesture. I had seen him do it three times since I walked in.

"The bond," he said. "I can still feel it."

My heart did not speed. My breath did not catch. I had trained both a long time ago. "You rejected the bond seven years ago. Publicly. With witnesses."

"I know what I did." His voice sharpened. "But I can still feel you. The scent. It's constant now. It's been constant since the day I—" He stopped. His jaw worked. "Since the ceremony. Wild honeysuckle and frost. Everywhere. I smell it when you're not even in the room."

I waited.

"You feel it too," he said. Not a question. A statement. "I know you do."

I considered lying. I considered silence. I chose precision instead.

"What you're describing is the Moon Goddess's punishment for rejecting a fated mate," I said. My voice was clinical. Steady. The voice I used to use when explaining terminal diagnoses to families who didn't want to hear them. "It is not a bond. It is a biological consequence. The phantom scent will intensify over time as your Alpha aura continues to deteriorate. It is irreversible."

His aura flared. I felt it — the pressure of an Alpha's dominance, pushing outward, filling the room. My silver collar bit into my throat, reacting to the power it was designed to suppress. The metal heated. I felt the familiar burn.

I did not flinch.

Kaden stepped closer. Too close. Close enough that I could see the hairline cracks forming in his composure.

"You're lying," he said quietly. "You still feel something. I know you do. The bond doesn't just disappear—"

"It does," I interrupted. "When you sever it. When you speak the rejection vow in front of three hundred witnesses and mark another woman before the words finish echoing. It disappears. What you're experiencing now is not me. It is the Moon Goddess showing you what you destroyed."

His hand shot out. Not to strike. To grip my wrist. His fingers closed around the scarred skin where I had once worn medicinal gloves daily, back when my hands healed instead of scrubbed.

"I made a mistake," he said. His voice cracked on the last word. "I made a mistake, and I've spent seven years knowing it, and now you're here again, and the scent is so strong I can't breathe through it—"

I looked down at his hand on my wrist. Then up at his face.

"Let go," I said.

He did. Immediately. Like my words had burned him.

I stepped back. I straightened my collar. I kept my voice level.

"Is there anything else you need, Alpha?"

He stared at me. His aura was still flaring, still pressing against my suppression collar, but underneath it I could see the exhaustion. The desperation. The man who wanted something he had thrown away and couldn't understand why it wouldn't come back.

"No," he said finally. "You're dismissed."

I turned. I walked to the door. My hand was on the handle when he spoke again.

"Arabella."

I stopped. I did not turn around.

"I never stopped—" He exhaled roughly. "The bond is still there. Somewhere. I know it is."

I opened the door.

"Goodbye, Alpha," I said.

I closed it quietly behind me. I walked back down the corridor with measured steps. I did not run. I did not rush. I returned to the service room. I sat on the cot. I breathed.

Inside the cold empty space where Seraphine used to be, I felt nothing. Not satisfaction. Not grief. Just the flat, factual recognition that Kaden was dying from the inside out, one phantom scent at a time, and there was nothing he could do to stop it.

I picked up the next stack of linens and resumed folding.
