Chapter 1

The bond broke at 9:47 on a Saturday night, three words into a vow that was supposed to bind us forever.

"I, Kaden, Alpha of Silverfang, reject you, Arabella, as my mate and Luna."

My mark went cold before he finished the sentence. Not numb. Cold, the way a body goes cold — the warmth bleeding out from the center of the bite scar he had given me only two weeks before, racing outward in a slow expanding ring. Then it went hollow. Like a door closing on an empty room. Like something walking out and not coming back.

Inside my chest, Seraphine — my wolf, quiet, soft-footed Seraphine who had hummed under my skin all day — let out a sound I had never heard from her before. Not a howl. A pulse. One last furious flare of heat, telling me to *stand, stand, stand* — and then she went out. Like a lamp blown across the room by a hand that wasn't mine.

I didn't fall. Not yet.

The ceremony hall held its breath. Three hundred of them. Every Alpha in their formal whites, every Beta in dark silver, every wolf I had stitched, dosed, soothed through fever — all of them perfectly still, watching the altar where I stood in a dress I had chosen with my own hands.

Kaden didn't look at me again. He turned. Emilia Jensen was already stepping out from behind the second pillar, smiling the way you smile when you have rehearsed it. She tilted her neck. He sank his teeth into the soft place under her jaw, and the marking light flared gold — the gold that should have been mine — and the assembled pack went down to one knee in a single rolling motion, like wheat in wind.

The scent hit me a half second later. Her perfume on his collar. His skin on her throat. Both layered over the dead place where the bond had been.

My knees buckled.

I heard my own voice, very quiet, very level. "Don't."

I don't know who I was speaking to. Maybe Seraphine. Maybe the Moon Goddess. Maybe the woman I had been forty seconds ago.

No one answered. Two of Kaden's enforcers caught me under the arms before I touched the marble. They were Delta wolves. One of them was named Brent. I had set his shoulder eight months ago when he came in off a rogue skirmish with the bone showing through. He did not meet my eyes. He gripped my elbow with the same hand I had taught to bandage itself, and he walked me off the altar floor while my dress dragged behind me.

I did not beg. I had two breaths left in me before my throat closed, and I spent them looking. I looked at every face. I named them in my head as we passed. *Marta, broken wrist, spring of the third year. Devon, wolfsbane exposure, I stayed up forty-one hours. Ilse, pup fever, twins, both lived.* I did not cry. I memorized.

They put me in a holding room. Seventy-two hours later they put me before a tribunal.

Emilia had been busy. Wolfsbane traced to my sealed stores. Three coached witnesses. A written ledger of my supposedly *erratic behavior* in the weeks before the ceremony, in handwriting that wasn't mine but close enough to mine.

I stood with my dead mark and my dead wolf and I said, "I will identify the compound. Thirty seconds. One sample. My nose against the glass, that's all."

Kaden's Alpha tone cracked across the room before I reached the word *all.* "Denied."

The pressure of it slammed my knees down into the stone. I felt my jaw lock around the rest of the sentence. I held there, on the floor, while the tribunal read the verdict above my head.

Seven years.

They locked the collar on me in the same room. Silver. Not the ornamental kind that marks low rank — the dense kind, the suppression kind, with the little burn that finds every channel an aura uses and chokes it down. They needn't have bothered. There was nothing left to suppress. But I felt it work anyway, biting into the place where Seraphine used to be, sealing the door she had already walked out of.

Seven years compresses strangely in memory. What stays is the texture of stone under my palms at three in the morning. The smell of lye. The sound of Emilia's laughter two floors above me, drifting down through the vents. The Delta named Devon, the one whose life I had stayed up forty-one hours to save, stepping over my bucket on his way to breakfast. The cloth in my hands, wrung out exactly, placed exactly. Steady hands. The last thing no one can take.

On the seventh anniversary of the night Kaden said my name and unsaid it, they opened the gate.

I walked out carrying three things: a healer's satchel I had hidden one packet at a time, a small folded record of every formula I had not yet been forced to transcribe for the woman wearing my life, and a memorized map of where the nearest territory line ran.

I did not look back. I crossed the boundary stones at sunrise and kept walking.

Nineteen days later, in a rented coastal cabin in Oregon, with the Pacific gray and steady outside the window and a low light burning in the corner because I cannot sleep in the dark anymore, I stepped out onto the porch to check the herb beds.

The wind shifted.

Silverfang pack-scent. On the road. East, maybe a quarter mile, moving toward the cabin.

My body locked before my mind caught up. My fingers closed around the porch rail, and I heard, very clearly, the sound of car tires slowing on gravel.
