Chapter 3

The Moonveil Pack's banquet hall smelled of cedar smoke and expensive wine. I walked in on Orion's arm and felt every head turn at once, the way heads always turn when a room decides in advance what it is about to see.

I kept my chin level. My dress was dark green. Dara had picked it out. She said green made a statement without making a scene, and I had decided to trust her on that because I had no scene left in me to make.

Orion's hand rested at the small of my back. Light. Steady. He did not steer me. He walked beside me at exactly my pace and let the pressure of his presence do the rest.

We were seated near the head of the room. Fletcher and Juliana were across the table and two seats down. Close enough to see. Close enough to be seen.

Juliana rose before the first course was served.

"Prince Orion." Her voice was soft, breath-thin, pitched to carry only as far as it needed to. "Forgive me. A procedural question, if you'll indulge me."

The room quieted. She had a gift for that.

"I mean no offense to your companion." Her eyes flicked to me, sad and gentle. "But at a diplomatic gathering of this weight—with the Court's dignity to consider—I wonder if a wolfless Omega can properly represent the Lycan seat. I ask only out of concern."

My fingers wanted to press against my neck. I did not let them.

Fletcher cleared his throat. He did not stand. He leaned forward, elbows on the table, and looked at me for the first time since we sat down.

"It's a fair question," he said. His alpha tone was pulled tight over the words, but I heard the crack in it, the place where he was trying to steady himself and failing. "What kind of Luna could a wolfless she-wolf be, exactly?"

The hall held its breath.

Orion did not stand. He did not raise his voice. He set his wine glass down on the tablecloth, and the aura came off him like a wave off deep water.

I felt it move around me. Not through me. Around. As if the mark on my neck had drawn a small clear space and the pressure had agreed to respect it.

Everywhere else in the room, wolves buckled.

Fletcher's shoulders dropped hard. His head tipped forward. His hands gripped the edge of the table and I saw his knuckles go white where he was trying to hold himself upright and losing. Juliana sank back into her chair with her chin against her collarbone and her throat exposed. Every Alpha in that room bared their neck without meaning to. Delegations from four packs, and every one of them looking at the ceiling because they could not look anywhere else.

I sat in the middle of it. Untouched. The bond mark on my neck was warm.

Orion spoke into the silence, conversational, almost mild.

"Anastasia is founding an independent warrior-training compound on Lycan territory. Construction begins this week." He picked his wine glass back up. "If any Alpha present wishes to formally question her standing, the Lycan Council convenes the second Tuesday of every month. I'll expect your petition in writing."

The aura eased. Wolves gasped in like swimmers surfacing.

Fletcher and Juliana left before the second course. They did not look at me on the way out. The room's silence followed them to the door and stayed after.

I drank my water. My hand was perfectly steady. I noticed that from very far away, as if it belonged to someone else.

---

The compound broke ground three days later.

I walked the site in boots that were too new and made my ankles hurt. Foundation stakes. String lines. The smell of turned earth. I stood at the edge of it and tried to make it feel like mine.

The first cohort arrived that Friday. Nine of them. Young wolves from smaller packs whose Alphas had sent them because the Lycan Prince's name was on the invitation and refusing would have been rude.

Rhea was the last through the gate. Small. Wolfless. Watchful in a way I recognized before she said a word. She kept her hands folded in front of her like she was waiting for permission to breathe.

I put her in the front row.

I wrote the training program the night before on the kitchen counter with a mug of tea going cold beside me. Ten years of watching Silverfang drills from the pack house window. Ten years of noticing which footwork got warriors killed and which kept them alive. I built the program around what I knew: physical conditioning for the ones whose wolves hadn't shifted yet, tactical positioning for the ones who had, and a habit of watching each of them individually until I understood exactly where they broke.

I trained beside them. Every drill. Every set. My lungs burned and my legs shook and I did not stop before they did.

By the end of the first week, Rhea stayed after the session to help me stack the equipment. She did not speak. She just worked.

I understood.

---

Orion came to the third session.

I didn't see him arrive. He was at the perimeter fence when I finally turned my head, one shoulder against a post, arms crossed, watching. I don't know how long he'd been there. Forty minutes, maybe. Longer.

I did not stop the drill. I did not wave. I finished the set, corrected Rhea's stance, moved to the next exercise.

When the trainees dispersed, he walked over.

"The footwork in the third set," he said. "For the ones who haven't shifted. It's inefficient."

I waited.

He stepped onto the mat. Demonstrated. Three movements. A weight shift I hadn't considered because I had built the drill from the outside looking in, not from inside a body that had never learned to trust its own balance.

I watched. I nodded.

"I'll adjust it tomorrow."

"Good." He stepped off the mat. He didn't wait for thanks. He didn't seem to want any.

He left.

That evening there was a pack law manual on my desk. Two chapters bookmarked. No note.

I read both before I slept. The mark on my neck was warm the whole time, and I did not let myself think too hard about why.
