Chapter 2

The Solstice Gathering always felt too bright. Too loud. Too full of wolves pretending they were something more than animals dressed in ceremony.

Tonight it was worse.

Torches lined the ceremonial clearing in two long rows, their flames snapping in the cold wind. Hundreds of pack members filled the space between them—standing in clusters by rank, their faces painted gold by firelight, their voices a low hum that never quite settled into silence. At the center of it all, the Alpha platform rose like a stage, and Jaxon stood on it in full ceremonial dress, his aura radiating outward in waves I could feel even from the edge of the crowd.

I held Wynter's hand and waited.

She was still weak. The healer had released her from observation two days ago, but her wolf hadn't stirred since the poisoning. She leaned against my side, her small fingers cold inside mine, and I could feel her heartbeat through our joined palms—too fast, too shallow, the rhythm of a child who knew something bad was coming and didn't have the words for it yet.

I squeezed her hand once. She looked up at me with wide, dark eyes.

"It's okay," I whispered.

It wasn't. But she needed to hear it anyway.

Jaxon's voice cut through the clearing like a blade.

"Hadley Wells."

Every head turned. The hum of conversation died instantly. I felt the weight of hundreds of eyes land on me at once—curious, pitying, hungry for whatever was about to happen.

I stepped forward.

The crowd parted as I walked, a slow ripple of bodies pulling back to let me through. Wynter's hand stayed locked in mine. I didn't look at anyone. I kept my gaze fixed on the platform ahead, on Jaxon's silhouette against the torchlight, and I counted my breaths the way I had learned to do in the silver cell.

In. Out. In. Out.

When I reached the base of the platform, I stopped. Jaxon stood above me, his expression carved from stone, his hands clasped behind his back. To his left, on a smaller raised section of the platform, Priscilla stood in a ceremonial gown of deep red—the color reserved for a Luna-to-be. Her hair was braided with gold thread. Her smile was small and satisfied.

She met my eyes for just a second, and I saw it there—triumph.

Jaxon's voice rang out again, formal and clear, pitched to carry across the entire clearing.

"Four years ago, I claimed Hadley Wells as my mate and marked her as Luna of this pack. Tonight, before the Moon Goddess and this assembled pack, I sever that bond."

The words landed like stones in water. Ripples of shock moved through the crowd—gasps, murmurs, the shuffle of feet as people leaned toward each other to whisper. I felt Wynter's hand tighten in mine, her nails digging into my palm.

I didn't move.

Jaxon stepped to the edge of the platform, looking down at me with eyes that held nothing—no regret, no hesitation, no recognition of what he was about to do. His voice dropped into the formal cadence of the rejection vow, each word deliberate and final.

"I, Jaxon Cole, Alpha of the Ironclad Pack, reject you, Hadley Wells, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck ignited.

It wasn't pain at first. It was heat—a white-hot searing that started at the bite scar and spread outward like wildfire beneath my skin, racing down my spine, into my chest, wrapping around my ribs until I couldn't breathe. My wolf, already so deeply buried, convulsed once—a desperate, choking thrash—and then collapsed into absolute silence.

The heat vanished.

What replaced it was worse.

Cold. Hollow. Dead.

The bond tore at the cellular level, a biological ripping that left nothing behind except an empty space where something vital used to be. My knees buckled. I went down hard, my palms slamming into the packed earth, Wynter's hand slipping from mine as I fell.

I couldn't hear the crowd anymore. I couldn't hear anything except the roaring in my ears and the awful, suffocating silence inside me where my wolf should have been.

I pressed my hand to my neck. The mark was still there—I could feel the raised scar tissue under my fingertips—but it was cold. Lifeless. A brand that no longer meant anything.

Above me, Jaxon turned away.

He extended his hand toward Priscilla. She stepped forward, her red gown trailing behind her, and placed her hand in his. The crowd's murmurs grew louder—some approving, some uncertain, all watching as Jaxon guided her to the center of the platform.

The Mate Ceremony was about to begin.

I lifted my head slowly. My vision was blurred at the edges, my body still shaking from the severed bond, but I could see them clearly enough—Jaxon and Priscilla standing together under the full moon, his hand at her throat, her head tilted back to bare her neck for the marking bite.

Priscilla's eyes found mine across the distance.

She smiled.

I didn't look away. I watched as Jaxon lowered his head, as his teeth broke her skin, as the new bond snapped into place with a force that rippled outward through the clearing. Priscilla gasped, her hands clutching at Jaxon's shoulders, and the pack erupted into howls—a celebration, a confirmation, a sealing.

I pulled Wynter into my arms and stood.

My legs were unsteady. My chest felt like it had been hollowed out with a blade. But I stood.

No one tried to stop me as I turned and walked back through the crowd. They parted again, faster this time, their faces carefully blank. I felt their stares on my back—the discarded Luna, the rejected mate, the woman who had just been erased in front of everyone.

I didn't care.

Wynter buried her face against my shoulder, her small body trembling. I pressed my lips to the top of her head and kept walking.

Behind me, the howls continued. The ceremony went on. Jaxon's voice rose above the noise, strong and certain, as he presented his new Luna to the pack.

I didn't turn around.

I walked until the torchlight faded behind us, until the trees swallowed the noise, until the only sound left was Wynter's quiet, hitching breaths and the hollow echo of my own footsteps.

And inside me, where the bond used to be, there was nothing.

Nothing at all.
