Chapter 4

Diego's wolf was dying.

He did not know it yet, not in the way that would force him to name it, but his body knew. His shift took three seconds longer than it used to. His aura flickered at the edges during morning briefings, like a candle in wind. His Alpha tone—once effortless, once the thing that made weaker wolves bare their throats without thinking—now required effort. Conscious effort. The kind that left a metallic taste in his mouth and a tightness in his chest that did not fade.

He told himself it was stress.

The territory expansion had been aggressive. The new alliances required maintenance. Brianna had moved into the Alpha suite and reorganized the warrior ranks, which meant half the pack was adjusting to new command structures. These things took energy. That was all.

But in the Council room that morning, when he used Alpha tone to silence a dispute between two Deltas, his voice cracked.

Just for a second. Just the smallest fracture at the end of the command.

Both Deltas went quiet. But two senior warriors standing near the door exchanged a look.

Diego saw it.

He dismissed the meeting early and walked back to his office alone. His hands were steady. His stride was even. He closed the door, sat down at his desk, and stared at the wall.

The bond was gone. He had severed it cleanly, formally, in front of three hundred witnesses. That was supposed to be the end of it. Liv was gone. Brianna wore the pendant now, wore his mark, wore the Luna title to every public event. She was stronger, more visible, more useful. She made sense.

So why did his wolf feel like it was trying to claw its way out of his chest and failing?

He pushed the thought away and opened the alliance correspondence. There was work to do. There was always work to do.

He did not think about the three-year period when the work had been easier.

---

Brianna stood in front of the mirror in the Alpha suite and fastened the moonstone pendant around her neck.

It caught the light beautifully—pale stone set in silver, engraved with some kind of crest she had never bothered to decipher. It did not matter what it meant. It mattered what it looked like: proof that she had won.

She adjusted the chain so the pendant rested just above her collarbone, exactly where it had rested on Liv's throat before Diego ripped it free. The symmetry satisfied her.

Tonight was the eastern alliance dinner. Every ranking wolf in Ironvale would be there, plus delegates from two neighboring packs. Brianna had spent the last week reorganizing the seating arrangements, the menu, the security rotations. She was good at this. Better than Liv had ever been.

She turned away from the mirror and walked to the window.

Below, in the training yard, warriors ran drills under the afternoon sun. She watched them move—sharp, efficient, loyal. Hers now. She had earned this.

The door opened behind her. Diego stepped in, his jacket slung over one shoulder, his expression unreadable.

"Ready?" he asked.

Brianna turned and smiled. "Always."

He looked at her for a moment, his gaze dropping briefly to the pendant, then back to her face. Something flickered in his eyes—not doubt, not regret, just a kind of assessment she had seen before.

"Good," he said.

He crossed the room, kissed her once, quick and perfunctory, and left.

Brianna touched the pendant and followed.

---

Caleb Rowe stood at the Silvercrest gate with two other Ironvale wolves and tried to remember how to breathe.

He had rehearsed this. He had gone over the words in his head for three days. But now that he was here, now that the gate was opening and a Silvercrest Beta was walking toward them, the words felt too heavy to lift.

Marcus Webb stopped three feet away and looked at them without expression.

"State your business," Marcus said.

Caleb swallowed. "We're here to speak with Liv Sanders."

Marcus's expression did not change, but something shifted in his posture. "She's not taking visitors."

"We're not visitors," Caleb said. His voice was steadier than he expected. "We're witnesses."

Marcus was quiet for a long moment. Then he nodded once. "Wait here."

He turned and walked back through the gate. The three Ironvale wolves stood in silence. One of them—a younger Delta named Iris—shifted her weight and looked at Caleb.

"What if she doesn't want to see us?" Iris asked quietly.

"Then we leave," Caleb said. "But we ask first."

Ten minutes later, Marcus returned.

"Follow me," he said.

They walked through Silvercrest territory in silence. The packhouse was smaller than Ironvale's, older, built into the hillside rather than imposed on top of it. Marcus led them to a side entrance, down a narrow hallway, and stopped outside a door.

"She'll see you," Marcus said. "One at a time."

Caleb looked at the other two. Iris nodded. The third wolf—a Gamma named Ben—gestured for Caleb to go first.

Caleb stepped through the door.

Liv was sitting at a small table near the window. She was not wearing the ruined ceremonial dress anymore. She was wearing plain training clothes—black, functional, sized to fit. Her neck was bandaged. Her hair was pulled back. She looked up when he entered, and her expression was completely neutral.

"Sit," she said.

Caleb sat.

Liv folded her hands on the table and waited.

Caleb had rehearsed this. He had gone over the words. But now, sitting across from her, looking at the bandages on her neck and the flatness in her eyes, the rehearsed version felt wrong.

So he just told the truth.

"I was one of the warriors who escorted you to the border," he said. "I didn't stop Brianna when she clawed your neck. I didn't say anything when Diego watched. I just followed orders."

Liv did not react.

Caleb kept going. "The ceremony wasn't improvised. Diego planned it. He chose the timing weeks in advance. He told Brianna exactly when to step forward. He had the pendant ready. He knew what he was doing."

Liv's expression did not change, but her thumb moved to her collarbone. She pressed it against the hollow there, then lowered her hand.

"Why are you telling me this?" she asked.

Caleb met her eyes. "Because it was wrong. And because if you need someone to say it in front of a Council, I will."

Liv was quiet for a long time.

Then she said, "Will the others testify?"

"Iris will. Ben will. There are more."

Liv nodded once. She stood, walked to a shelf, and pulled down a blank file. She set it on the table between them and wrote one word on the tab: *Testimony.*

"Write it down," she said. "Everything you saw. Everything you heard. Sign it."

Caleb took the file. "And then?"

"And then you wait," Liv said. "I'll call you when I need you."

She walked to the door and opened it. The meeting was over.

Caleb stood, the file in his hands, and walked out.

Iris and Ben went in after him, one at a time. When they came out, they did not speak. They just followed Marcus back to the gate.

Inside the small room, Liv sat alone with the file on the table.

She opened it. Three signed statements. Three witnesses.

She closed it again and set it on the shelf next to her legal research.

Then she went back to the library and kept reading.

---

The Summit invitation arrived in a sealed envelope bearing the Lycan royal crest.

Alex brought it to Liv in person.

She was in the library when he knocked. She looked up from the volume on territorial dissolution she had been annotating and saw him standing in the doorway, the envelope in his hand.

He did not come in. He just held it up so she could see the crest.

"Pack Summit," he said. "Hosted by my father. All Alphas required to attend with their Lunas."

Liv set down her pen. "Your father."

"Lycan King Alaric Sanders," Alex said. His voice was even, factual. "You have legitimate standing as a Silvercrest guest. You can attend."

Liv looked at the envelope. At the crest. At the man holding it.

"Why are you telling me this?" she asked.

Alex was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "Because Diego will be there. And I think you want to be in the room when he realizes his wolf is dying in front of three hundred witnesses."

Liv went very still.

Inside her chest, the presence surged. Heat flooded through her, sudden and fierce, and her vision bled silver at the edges. She blinked and it cleared, but the warmth stayed.

She stood. Walked to the door. Took the envelope from Alex's hand.

"I'll go," she said.

Alex nodded once. He did not ask what she was planning. He did not offer help. He just looked at her with that steady, unreadable gaze and said, "Good."

Then he left.

Liv stood in the doorway, the envelope in her hands, and felt the presence inside her press closer to the surface.

Not a voice. Not yet.

But soon.
