Chapter 4

Mary wouldn't let me tend her face at first.

She sat on the edge of my cot with the compress I'd made from torn cloth pressed to her cheek, her hand steady, her eyes somewhere past my shoulder. The split in her lip had stopped bleeding but the bruise was already darkening—purple spreading across her cheekbone like spilled ink.

"Let me see," I said quietly.

She lowered the compress. The damage was worse up close. Dara had hit her hard enough to split skin. Hard enough to leave a mark that would last weeks.

I dampened a fresh cloth in the basin and cleaned the wound carefully. Mary didn't flinch. She just sat there, breathing steady, her hands loose in her lap.

"I've suspected the wolfsbane for months," she said.

I went still. The cloth hovered an inch from her face.

Mary met my eyes. "The bitterness in the evening meals. The way it was masked with honey. The timing—how you'd be worse the mornings after."

"Why didn't you say anything?" My voice came out quieter than I meant it to.

"Because raising the question would have drawn attention I couldn't afford." Mary's tone was matter-of-fact. "If I'd asked too many questions about your household, about the kitchens, someone would have wondered why an old Omega cared so much. And then they would have looked closer at me."

I pressed the cloth to her cheek and held it there. My hands weren't shaking. That surprised me.

"Did you keep a record?" I asked.

Mary reached into her apron pocket. She pulled out a folded paper, edges worn soft from handling, and set it on the cot between us.

I picked it up. Unfolded it.

The handwriting was small and precise. Dates running down the left margin. Observations beside each one. *March 14—evening meal, chicken broth, faint herbal bitterness beneath rosemary. E. could not rise the following morning.* *April 3—stew with root vegetables, honey glaze unusually thick. E. vomited twice before dawn.* *May 22—Giselle personally delivered dinner tray. E. bedridden for three days.*

There were ingredient lists. Timing notes. A record of every meal that had preceded my worst days, written in the careful hand of someone who had been watching for months and saying nothing.

I held the paper and understood what I was looking at.

A weapon.

I folded it carefully and tucked it inside my leg brace, between the metal frame and my skin. The paper pressed cold against my calf.

"Thank you," I said.

Mary nodded once. She took the compress back and held it to her face. "What are you going to do with it?"

"I don't know yet." I sat down beside her on the cot. "But when the time comes, I'll use it."

We sat in silence for a long moment. Outside, the night was full dark. The pack house had gone quiet.

"You should rest," Mary said finally. She stood, slow and careful, and moved toward the door.

"Mary."

She turned back.

"I won't forget this," I said.

Her expression softened just slightly. "I know."

She left. The door closed behind her with a soft click.

I sat alone in the dark and pressed my hand to the paper hidden in my brace. The edges were sharp against my skin.

---

I moved through the pack house at midnight.

The corridor guard had taken his break right on schedule. I'd listened to his footsteps fade toward the kitchens, counted to sixty, then slipped out of my room. My leg brace scraped softly against the floor with every step. I kept my weight on the balls of my feet and moved slowly. No rush. No panic.

The Beta's office was on the second floor, east wing. I'd been there a hundred times as Luna—sitting across from Blake during border meetings, reviewing patrol schedules, signing supply requisitions. The door was never locked during daylight hours because no one challenged the Beta's authority.

But it was locked now.

I lifted the handle and pulled at the same time, the way Mary had taught me with the pantry door. The lock clicked. The door opened.

I stepped inside and closed it behind me.

The office smelled like leather and old paper. Moonlight came through the single window, painting everything in shades of gray. I crossed to the desk and opened the top drawer. Patrol rotation logs were always kept there—the Beta updated them weekly and Blake reviewed them every Sunday.

The current log was on top. I pulled it out and unfolded it across the desk.

The patrol routes had changed. Not drastically, but enough. The eastern border coverage had three gaps that hadn't been there six months ago: a forty-minute window between the dawn and midday shifts, another at dusk, and a third after midnight when the supply road guard rotated out. Blake had thinned the patrols to redirect warriors elsewhere—probably to the northern border where he'd been posturing against Blackhollow Pack for the past year.

I memorized the routes. The timing. The names of the patrol leaders. I cross-referenced everything against what I already knew, updating the mental map I'd been building for five years.

When I was done, I refolded the log exactly as I'd found it and placed it back in the drawer. I closed the drawer. I crossed to the door, listened for footsteps in the corridor, heard nothing.

I slipped out and pulled the door shut behind me. The lock clicked.

I was back in my room three minutes later. No one had seen me. No one would know.

I sat on the cot and pressed my fingertips to my leg brace, feeling the paper Mary had given me still tucked inside.

Two weapons now. One written. One memorized.

I closed my eyes and waited for the current in my chest to stir. It was there—faint, but warmer than it had been yesterday. Closer to the surface.

Not yet, I thought. But soon.

---

Dara Whitfield cornered me two days later.

I was in the lower corridor, carrying a bucket of wash water back to my room, when she stepped out of the stairwell with three junior warriors behind her. I recognized two of them from the kitchen—the ones who'd held me while Giselle poured wolfsbane into the meal tray.

Dara blocked my path. She was taller than me by half a head, broader in the shoulders, and she carried herself with the easy confidence of someone who'd never been challenged.

"Your grace period is ending," she said. Her voice was pleasant. Almost friendly. "Blake's decided to formally process your exile. You should start preparing to vacate the pack house."

I set the bucket down slowly. Water sloshed against the sides.

"When?" I asked.

Dara shrugged. "Soon. Maybe a week. Maybe less."

I looked at her. At the three warriors behind her. At the way they stood—relaxed, hands loose, no immediate threat.

"Are you aware," I said quietly, "that the Luna Accord's protection rites require a formal Council hearing before any Luna—former or current—can be expelled from pack territory under exile status?"

Dara's expression flickered. Just for a second. Uncertainty.

She wasn't certain.

I held her gaze and said nothing further. Let the silence stretch. Let the doubt settle.

Dara's jaw tightened. She glanced at the warriors behind her, then back at me.

"We'll see," she said finally.

She turned and walked away. The three warriors followed.

I picked up the bucket and continued down the corridor. My leg brace scraped the floor. My hands were steady.

I'd bought time. Days, not weeks. But days were what I needed.

I reached my room, set the bucket down, and pressed my hand to my sternum.

Deep in the silence, something stirred.

Still faint. Still waiting.

But closer now.
