After My Alpha Rejected Me, His Pack Followed Me

At the Autumn Banquet, Gemma Walker planned every candle and chose every wine—until Alpha Simon Cooper speaks eleven words that sever their mate bond and strip her of Luna. The pain carves through her like silver, dropping her to the stone floor as pregnant Capri clings to Simon's arm, already crowned his new Luna. "Get her out," he orders. Yet Gemma rises from the hall she built through sleepless nights and hard negotiations, and the pack begins to turn. They follow her—away from the Alpha who rejected her. A werewolf romance of betrayal, forbidden desire, and a woman reclaiming her power.

Chapter 4

The Pack Summit was held on neutral ground, a long hall carved into the side of a mountain that belonged to no one, its stone walls hung with the banners of a dozen packs that had agreed, centuries ago, to stop killing each other inside these walls at least. I walked in under my own name for the first time. Not Gemma Walker, Ironveil's assistant. Not the quiet woman who used to sit two seats back from Simon with a folder in her lap. Gemma Walker, Alpha of Dawnridge.

I felt the room notice.

Alpha Reyes of Thornfield actually stood up halfway out of his chair before he caught himself. I'd negotiated a grazing rights dispute with him eighteen months ago over three days of tense correspondence, and he'd sent his regards, every letter, to 'Alpha Cooper.' Now his eyes moved over me like he was rereading a document he'd misfiled. Alpha Voss of Redbank didn't bother hiding his stare at all. I'd once talked his father down from a border skirmish that would have cost both packs a season of peace, and he'd shaken Simon's hand afterward and thanked him for his wisdom.

I took my seat and did not explain myself to any of them.

The border session went the way I'd known it would the moment I read the agenda. Ironveil's representative — not Simon, again, a pattern I intended to keep noting for the Council — tried to reopen a boundary line along Dawnridge's northeast quarter, arguing the original Luna Accord grant had been 'improperly surveyed.' I let him talk until he ran out of momentum, and then I laid the original survey documents on the table, the ones I'd filed myself, the ones with my own handwriting in the margins from five years ago when I'd drawn that boundary the first time, long before it was ever mine to claim.

"These are Ironveil's own records," I said. "Filed and countersigned. If your Alpha wishes to dispute his own signature, I welcome him to attend in person and say so."

The representative had nothing. The Council mediator ruled in Dawnridge's favor before the recess bell even sounded.

I stepped into the corridor to breathe.

Simon was there before I'd gone ten feet, and I understood, with a kind of tired clarity, that he'd been waiting.

"Gemma." His voice dropped into the register I'd heard a thousand times in five years, the one that used to make junior warriors flinch and staff go quiet mid-sentence. Alpha tone. Command woven into sound. "You'll return that boundary line to negotiation. Today."

It rolled over me the way it always used to — a pressure at the base of my skull, an old instinct that wanted my spine to bend.

And then it broke.

It broke against something in me that hadn't existed the last time he'd used that voice on me, some new floor beneath my feet that his authority simply had no purchase on anymore. I watched the realization land on his face in real time — the flicker of confusion, then the flash of anger at being denied something that had always, always worked.

"You don't command me anymore, Simon," I said. My voice didn't rise. It didn't need to. "You rejected that right along with everything else."

His jaw tightened. He opened his mouth to try again, and I felt the air itself change before he made a sound.

Daxton stepped between us.

He didn't announce himself. He didn't posture. One moment the corridor held two of us, and the next it held three, and something vast had unfurled into the space with him — not performed, not aimed, simply released, the way a held breath finally leaves a chest. The temperature seemed to drop. My skin prickled with it.

Simon's knees buckled.

I watched his wolf — already thin, already frayed at the edges from five years of a bond he'd never deserved and days now of one he'd severed — collapse inward on itself, and Simon's body followed it down, his chin tipping back, baring his throat in the corridor in front of three Alphas who had stopped mid-stride to watch.

Nobody moved to help him. Nobody spoke.

Daxton looked at him the way you'd look at something you'd stepped over on a sidewalk. Not cruel. Not even angry. Just entirely, coldly finished with the question of whether Simon Cooper mattered.

Then he turned to me and inclined his head. Not a bow. A greeting between equals, deliberate and precise.

That was when the scent reached me — cedar smoke and winter rain, threading under the stone and old parchment smell of the hall, so specific it stopped my breath in my chest.

Something in me — not memory, not thought, something older and faster than either — turned toward it like a compass needle finding north.

I didn't understand it. I only knew my wolf had gone utterly, completely still, the way she never did, listening.
