Chapter 2

Dawnridge smelled like rain and rot when I first stepped onto its soil.

The border markers were half-collapsed, wooden posts leaning at angles that made them useless for anything except proving nobody had cared about this land in years. Zendaya walked three paces behind me, silent for once, her boots crunching through underbrush that should have been cleared seasons ago.

I stopped at what used to be the main patrol route. The path was barely visible now, choked with weeds and fallen branches. To the east, I could see the remains of a den—roof caved in, walls crumbling into the foundation. Nobody had lived here in a long time.

"It's worse than the maps showed," Zendaya said finally.

"It's exactly what I expected." I pulled out the notebook I'd brought and started writing. North border: patrol route unusable, needs full clearing. East quadrant: three collapsed structures, salvage timber before winter. Water access: creek bed visible but need to verify year-round flow.

Zendaya watched me work. "You're making a list."

"I'm making a plan." I moved forward, stepping over a rotted log. The forest pressed in on all sides, dense and overgrown, the kind of wilderness that swallows territory whole if you let it. But underneath the decay, I could see the bones of something defensible. The ridge to the west was high ground. The creek, if it ran year-round, was fresh water. The collapsed dens were stone foundation, which meant they could be rebuilt.

We walked the full perimeter. It took until nightfall. My boots were caked with mud, my hands smudged with dirt from testing the stability of old structures, and my notebook was full of notes written in fading light. Zendaya had stopped talking after the first hour, but she stayed close, watching me measure distances, test soil, mark chokepoints.

When we finally circled back to the center clearing, I sat down on a flat stone and started organizing the notes into categories. Immediate repairs. Resource acquisition. Defensive priorities.

"Gemma," Zendaya said quietly. "You haven't stopped moving since we got here."

"I can't afford to stop." I didn't look up. "This place needs a full patrol rotation by the end of the week or we're vulnerable to rogue incursions. The western den can be made livable in three days if we prioritize it. The creek needs testing tomorrow morning. I need to know if—"

"Gemma."

I stopped. My hand was shaking slightly where it gripped the pen. I hadn't noticed.

Zendaya sat down beside me. She didn't touch me, didn't offer empty comfort. She just sat there in the dark, and after a long moment, she said, "What do you need me to do?"

I looked at her—really looked at her—and saw someone who had walked away from her own pack's safety to follow me into this broken territory without a single question about whether it was worth it.

"Be my Beta," I said.

She blinked. "I—"

"I need someone I trust. Someone who won't wait for permission to tell me when I'm wrong. Someone who knows how to navigate pack politics without playing games." I held her gaze. "I need you."

Zendaya's throat worked. Then she nodded once, sharp and certain. "Okay."

"Okay." I turned back to my notebook and started dividing tasks. "You take resource acquisition—contact your network, find out who's willing to trade with a new pack. I'll handle structural repairs and patrol schedules."

She leaned over to read my notes. "You're planning for eleven wolves."

"I'm planning for whoever comes." I wrote another line. "And if nobody does, I'm planning for two."

Zendaya smiled, small and tired. "You really think someone's going to leave Ironveil for this?"

I thought about Marcus Hale, the senior warrior who'd met my eyes across the Autumn Banquet hall the moment my wolf surfaced. I thought about the younger fighters who'd watched Simon take credit for strategies I'd written. I thought about every wolf in that pack who'd ever known the difference between real leadership and borrowed authority.

"Yes," I said. "I do."

---

At Ironveil, they were crowning a new Luna.

I didn't see it myself—Zendaya heard about it from a contact who'd attended, and she told me later, her voice flat with disgust. The ceremony had been planned for weeks, but half the allied delegates sent regrets. The hall that had been packed for the Autumn Banquet was half-empty for Capri's installation.

Simon stood beside her, performing confidence, but the cracks were already showing. Three of his best border patrol leaders hadn't shown up for duty that morning. Two more had submitted formal transfer requests.

Capri didn't notice. She was too busy hearing her own title spoken aloud, too busy wearing the Luna's ceremonial cloak that still smelled faintly of the woman who'd actually earned it.

Elaine Cooper stood at Simon's other side, smiling for appearances, but Zendaya's contact said her eyes kept moving over the empty chairs, counting absences.

Nobody said it out loud, but everyone felt it: something had shifted. The pack that had run smoothly for five years was suddenly lurching, missing steps, and the only thing that had changed was the woman standing at the Alpha's side.

---

Marcus Hale arrived at dawn three days later.

I was testing the creek's flow rate when I heard boots on the trail behind me. I turned, one hand instinctively moving toward the knife at my belt, and found Ironveil's most decorated senior warrior standing at the edge of the clearing.

He carried his full patrol kit. Behind him, half-visible in the trees, I counted ten more figures.

"Marcus," I said carefully.

He stepped forward and held out a folded paper. "Transfer requests. Eleven of us total. We'll follow pack protocol if you want it formal, but we're here either way."

I took the paper but didn't open it. "Why?"

"We know better," he said simply.

I looked past him at the warriors waiting in the trees. I recognized most of them—seasoned fighters, tacticians, wolves who'd served Ironveil for years. Wolves who'd watched me work in silence and never once been fooled about where the real orders came from.

I unfolded the paper I'd been carrying in my pocket since yesterday—the border patrol schedule I'd drafted, every shift, every rotation, every vulnerable point marked and assigned. I handed it to Marcus.

He read it. His eyes moved over the page once, twice. Then he looked up. "Western ridge is your weak point."

"I know," I said. "I'm putting our strongest patrol there until we can clear the approach routes."

He made a small mark on the page with his thumb. "Split the night shift. Two shorter rotations instead of one long one. Less fatigue, faster response time."

I considered it. He was right. "Done."

Marcus handed the schedule back. "Where do you want us?"

I pointed toward the western den. "That structure. Make it livable by sunset. After that, you're on first night patrol."

He nodded once and turned toward the others. "You heard her. Move."

They moved.

I stood in the clearing and watched eleven wolves disappear into the forest to rebuild what Simon had thought I couldn't hold, and for the first time since the rejection tore through my chest, I felt something other than the cold hollow where the bond used to be.

I felt the first edge of what came next.
