Chapter 5

The forty-eight hours ended at dawn.

I stood outside Dominic's office with the territorial renunciation document in my hand. The paper was smooth. Clean. Unsigned.

Cara and Jen flanked the door again. They didn't speak. Just opened it when I approached.

Dominic sat behind his desk. Two senior warriors stood near the window—Delta commanders, witnesses for the signing. Hailey leaned against the wall to his right, arms crossed, her posture radiating the casual ownership of a woman who already considered this space hers.

I stepped inside. The door closed behind me.

"You have the document," Dominic said. Not a question. A statement of expected compliance.

I crossed to his desk. Set the paper down in front of him.

Then I placed a second sheet on top of it.

Handwritten. Three lines. Three dates. Three names.

*Lena Marsh. Mira Kaine. Sage Hollis.*

*Wolfsbane. Eastern supply route. Authorization code on file.*

Dominic's eyes dropped to the note. His jaw tightened.

I looked at him. Not at Hailey. Not at the warriors. Just him.

"I haven't signed," I said quietly. "And I won't."

The silence that followed was not empty. It was the specific silence of a room where everyone present was suddenly calculating what I knew, how long I had known it, and what I intended to do with it.

Hailey's hand moved. Just slightly. Toward her hip. The instinctive reach of a warrior going for a weapon that wasn't there.

Dominic's eyes flicked to her. One look. Sharp. She went still.

He picked up the note. Read it slowly. Set it back down.

"You're making accusations," he said. His voice was level. Too level.

"I'm stating facts," I replied. "The dates are in the supply logs. The authorization code is yours. The she-wolves are alive and willing to testify."

"Testify to who?" Hailey's voice cut across the room. Sharp. Controlled. "You're a wolfless Omega with no pack standing. Who exactly do you think will listen to you?"

I didn't look at her. Kept my eyes on Dominic.

"The Lycan Council," I said simply. "If they request sealed testimony from the pack healer, she's legally compelled to provide it. You know that."

Dominic's fingers drummed once against the desk. Stopped.

Behind me, one of the Delta commanders shifted his weight. The movement was small. Uncertain.

I turned toward the door.

"Elena," Dominic said.

I stopped. Didn't turn back.

"You're making a mistake."

I pressed my thumb against my wrist. Felt my mother's token through the fabric of my sleeve.

"No," I said quietly. "I'm correcting one."

I walked out.

The door closed behind me with a sound like finality.

---

The announcement came that afternoon.

Pack-wide training demonstration. Tomorrow morning. Main training ground. Visiting Alphas would observe Ironveil's legendary defensive formations in action.

Dominic's voice carried across the compound through the pack mind-link, strong and certain. A show of force. A reassertion of authority.

I was assigned to equipment detail. Hauling water containers and training gear for the ranked warriors during the session. Hailey had designed the assignment herself—I could tell by the specific phrasing in the duty roster, the deliberate placement of my name at the bottom of the Omega task list.

She wanted me visible. Diminished. A living reminder to the pack of what happened to wolves who forgot their place.

I accepted the assignment without expression.

That night, I stood at the eastern boundary window and watched the tree line.

Thirty meters. The rogue courier routes. The supply chain I'd tracked for three years while maintaining the ward.

The ward.

I closed my eyes. Felt for the thread of power I'd been sustaining since I was nineteen years old. My mother's Lycan healing bloodline, channeled through me, woven into the territory's borders like an invisible net. Wolfsbane immunity. Rogue deterrence. The foundation of Ironveil's impenetrable reputation.

All mine.

I opened my eyes.

Tomorrow, I would let it go.

---

The training ground filled before dawn.

Visiting Alphas sat on the elevated observation platform, flanked by their Betas. Ironveil's ranked wolves assembled in formation on the field. Dominic stood at the center, his presence commanding, his aura flaring just enough to remind everyone present why he was Alpha.

I moved among the warriors with a water container in my hands. Invisible in my Omega role. No one looked at me. No one needed to.

The demonstration began.

Dominic called the first formation—staggered entry points, overlapping coverage zones, the rotation I'd designed in my second year. His voice was strong. Certain. The warriors moved with precision.

I walked to the center of the training ground. Set the water container down near the equipment racks.

And then I stopped.

I closed my eyes. Found the thread of the ward. The channel of power I'd held open for three years without rest, without recognition, without a single word of acknowledgment.

I let it go.

No announcement. No gesture. Just a quiet severing, like cutting a rope that had been holding weight for so long I'd forgotten what it felt like to stand without it.

The ward dissolved.

For a moment, nothing changed. The warriors kept moving. Dominic kept calling commands. The visiting Alphas watched with polite interest.

Then the air shifted.

Subtle. Wrong. A loosening at the edges of the territory, like a door left unlatched.

I opened my eyes.

Marcus Reid stood twenty feet away, mid-command to his Gamma unit. His head turned sharply toward the eastern perimeter. His hand went to his temple—the instinctive gesture of a wolf receiving an emergency mind-link.

His face went pale.

He crossed the field in four strides, heading straight for Dominic. The formation broke. Warriors stopped mid-drill, confused.

Marcus leaned close to Dominic. Spoke in a voice too low for most wolves to hear.

But I heard it.

"Rogue scouts. Eastern boundary. First breach in three years."

Dominic's head snapped toward the perimeter. His aura flared—not commanding now, but reactive. Uncertain.

On the observation platform, the visiting Alphas exchanged glances.

The training ground went silent.

I picked up the water container. Walked slowly toward the edge of the field.

Behind me, Dominic's voice rose, calling emergency defensive positions. Warriors scrambled. The demonstration collapsed into chaos.

I didn't look back.

I just kept walking.

And deep inside me, in the place where my wolf had been dormant for so long I'd stopped believing she existed, something stirred.

Not yet awake.

But listening.
