After My Alpha Rejected Me, His Pack Collapsed

At 9:47 PM, under the candlelit gaze of two hundred ranked wolves, Alpha Sterling's hand finds Ainsley Ellis's—and the mate mark on Rina's neck turns to ice. The rejection is physical, a wound reopening in the great hall's warmth. For months, she feigned ignorance of his wandering touch, pressing her ceremonial gown, standing dutifully at his side. Now, the bond is severed publicly, and the Ironclad pack's fragile order collapses. Rina must face the devastating aftermath of a rejection witnessed by all.

Chapter 3

The hall was older than anything I had walked through in the Ironclad territory. Stone that had been worn smooth by centuries of boots, not polished. Banners that had faded to the color of old silver. The Crescent Throne sat at the far end on a raised dais — not ornate, not theatrical. Just large. And solid. The kind of thing built to last past the men who sat in it.

Atticus Vane was already standing when I entered.

I do not know if he meant to be. I think he rose before he decided to.

His scent reached me at the same moment mine reached him — I understood this later, fitting the pieces together — but what I saw in real time was his hand close once around the arm of the throne and then release it. A single, controlled movement. His face did the rest of the work of composure, and he was very good at it, but I had spent eight years reading a man who thought he was unreadable, and I caught the moment.

Recognition. Something shifting behind his eyes like weather moving across open water.

I cut it off before it could become words.

"I'm here for an alliance, not a bond." I kept walking as I said it. Stopped ten feet from the dais. Close enough to be heard, far enough to be clear. "I'll save us both the conversation."

Something moved at the corner of his mouth. Not a smile. The precursor to one, controlled back into stillness.

"Then let's talk alliance," he said.

His voice was lower than I expected. Unhurried. The kind of voice that did not need a room to quiet down first.

I laid out the terms.

I had rehearsed them in Emmy's car, in the creek-cold morning two days ago, in the dark when I could not sleep. Thirty-two pages compressed into four minutes of clean, unadorned language: my protective resonance, documented and traceable through the Ironclad ward collapse timeline, offered as a territorial asset to the Crescent Throne. In exchange, Lycan Prince Atticus Vane's formal backing at a Lycan Council tribunal filed against Alpha Sterling Cross of the Ironclad Pack, under Council Protocol Section Fourteen. Grounds: deliberate endangerment of a ranked mate, attempted poisoning pending evidence, and conduct unbecoming a sovereign Alpha.

I did not gesture. I did not qualify. I stated the terms the way I would have stated a fact.

Atticus listened with his hands clasped behind his back and his eyes on my face. He did not interrupt. He did not look at the folder Sable had delivered ahead of me. When I finished, there was a pause of perhaps four seconds.

"Accepted," he said.

No counter-negotiation. No conditions attached. No performance of deliberation.

I held his gaze for one moment longer than necessary, checking for the thing I had learned to check for — the gap between what a man said and what he meant. I did not find it.

"You'll be given sovereign guest quarters," he added. "Not a Luna's chamber. Your second is welcome to the same wing."

Behind me, Emmy made a sound that was not quite a word. I did not turn around.

"That works," I said.

---

Emmy's commentary came in the corridor, two minutes later, in a low voice that carried exactly as far as she intended.

"Four minutes," she said. "He agreed to everything in four minutes."

"I know."

"I've negotiated with Gammas who took longer to agree on lunch."

"Emmy."

"I'm just noting it."

I pressed my fingertips to the back of my neck — the old reflex, still there — and said nothing. The skin was smooth. Still mine. My wolf settled her weight inside me, slow and deliberate, the way she did when she was paying attention to something I had not yet named.

I did not name it.

---

The training grounds were in the eastern quarter, past a stand of old-growth fir that smelled like cold iron and rain. Emmy had me on the ground inside the first twenty minutes of the first morning.

She was not gentle about it.

"You have the size," she said, standing over me while I stared at the grey sky. "You have the bloodline. What you don't have is any idea what to do with either. Get up."

I got up.

She put me down again.

This continued for four mornings. I was knocked down more times than I counted, and I got up every time without comment because there was nothing useful to say about it. My wolf's instincts were raw — enormous and untrained, like a weapon still in the forge. I could feel the power there, pressing against the inside of my skin, and I could not yet aim it.

On the fourth morning, Emmy came at me low and fast, the way she had been drilling into me for days, and something in my body stopped calculating and simply moved. I caught her weight, redirected it, and had her pinned in a dominant hold before either of us fully understood what had happened.

Emmy lay on the ground. She looked at the sky. She breathed.

"Okay," she said finally. "Within a month you're going to be genuinely terrifying."

I let her up.

That afternoon, I came back to my quarters and found a deer laid outside the door. Large. Clean kill. No note.

I stood there for a moment. My wolf went very still in the way she had been going still at specific, inconvenient intervals since I crossed the Crescent Throne's border.

I stepped over it, went inside, and did not mention it at dinner.

Neither did Atticus.

But I noticed, when I looked up from my plate, that he was watching the door of the hall with the patient, unhurried attention of someone who already knew the answer and was simply waiting to be asked.
