Chapter 1

The mate mark on my neck went cold at 9:47 PM, in front of two hundred ranked wolves, while Sterling's hand rested on Ainsley Ellis's.

I felt it the moment he touched her. Not metaphorically. Physically. A chill spreading outward from the bite scar on my neck, like ice water poured into a wound. I had been standing at his right side in my ceremonial Luna gown — ivory silk, the one I pressed myself this morning — and I had been pretending not to notice the way his thumb traced slow circles on the back of her hand at the ranked table.

I had been pretending for months. I was very good at it.

The great hall smelled like pine resin and roasted meat and the collective musk of every dominant wolf in the Ironclad territory. Candles along the stone walls. The annual Pack Banquet, same as the seven before it. I knew every face in this room. I had managed the seating arrangements myself.

Sterling rose for the traditional Luna address.

I smoothed my hands against my skirt and waited.

"Eight years," he said, and his voice carried the alpha tone — that low, resonant frequency that pressed against the chest like a hand. Every wolf in the room straightened slightly. "Eight years I have led this pack. And in that time, I have tolerated a weakness at my side that I can no longer afford."

The room went very quiet.

I did not move.

"A wolfless Luna who never earned her mark." His eyes found mine across the table. Flat. Certain. The eyes of a man who had already decided. "A barren shell the Moon Goddess placed here in error. Tonight, I correct that error."

He turned to face me fully.

And then he spoke the vow.

"I, Sterling Cross, Alpha of the Ironclad Pack, reject you, Carla Voss, as my mate and Luna."

The mark went from cold to hollow in the space of one heartbeat. Like a door closing in an empty room. Like something that had been quietly humming for eight years simply — stopped. I pressed my fingertips to my neck before I could stop myself and felt nothing. Smooth skin. No warmth. No pulse. Gone.

My knees hit the stone floor.

Not because I chose it. Because my body made the choice before I could.

I heard Ainsley's heels click against the floor as she began to move toward my vacated place. I heard the collective intake of breath from two hundred wolves. I pressed my palms flat against the cold stone and thought: get up. Get up right now.

I didn't get up.

What happened instead was this: something inside my chest cracked open.

Not grief. Not yet. Something older. Something that had been locked behind twenty-three years of chemical patience, pressing against the inside of my ribs for my entire life, and now the lock was gone and the door was gone and there was nothing left to hold it.

The pain hit me like a wall.

I heard the stone crack before I understood it was coming from me.

Then I was not myself anymore.

The shift was not like anything I had imagined a shift would feel like. It was not a transformation. It was an eruption. Every bone in my body remade itself simultaneously, and I opened my mouth to scream and what came out instead was something enormous and ancient and silver-white, and the stone floor split beneath me in a clean fracture that ran six feet in either direction.

I was standing.

I was enormous.

The territorial wards — the invisible architecture I had been quietly feeding for eight years through a bond I thought was just love — shattered. I felt them go. Every wolf in the room felt them go. A collective flinch, like a sound too low to hear but too large to miss. Sterling made a sound I had never heard from him before. His wolf staggered inside him; I could see it in the sudden dullness of his eyes, the way his shoulders dropped a full inch, the way his dark fur — visible only to wolf-sight — lost its sheen in real time, in front of every ranked wolf he had ever commanded.

Ainsley stopped walking. Her eyes dropped to the floor.

Involuntary. Instinctive. Bloodline submission.

I turned my head and looked at Sterling across the wreckage of his own great hall.

Then I walked out.

Sterling sent Reed Calloway after me. His Beta. I heard him coming through the pack's forest — fast, trained, purposeful — and I let him catch up to the border because I wanted him to see.

He stopped ten feet away from me at the edge of Ironclad land. Reed, who had been assessing dominant wolves his entire career, went absolutely still.

I opened the pack mind-link one last time.

I sent the words directly to Sterling, quiet and clean: *You rejected me. Feel what that costs.*

Then I severed the link, stepped across the border, and walked into the dark.
