Chapter 3

I learned about the third night in Silverfang the same way I learned about the second — later, from a Beta who could not look me in the eye when he told it.

While I was sitting at a table two hours from the Lycan Court, sealing wax onto a courier envelope, Amora was kneeling at the eastern sentry post with a small leather pouch in her hand. The pouch was hers. She had brought it with her when she transferred. Wolfsbane, ground fine, mixed with a binder that made it cling to wet skin. She pressed it into the bandages of two sentries who were already mildly poisoned, and she dusted it along the inside of a third's gauntlet. Three more warriors went down by morning. Tremors, fevers, the dark sweat that comes when the body is fighting something it cannot name.

Then she walked twenty yards into the trees and dropped a fragment of Ironclaw's border marker into the leaf litter, where the search party would find it before noon.

Emiliano came out to look at the site himself. Roland Voss told me later that Emiliano stood over the marker for a long time, the way a man stands over a thing he has already decided is true. He did not turn it over. He did not check the weathering on the break. He simply nodded once and started drafting his complaint to the Lycan Council in his head.

Roland saw the wolfsbane on the sentries' wounds. Roland knew Ironclaw's compound — every Beta within fifty miles knew it, a coppery streak through the green of standard wolfsbane, a calling card of the old breeder's lab Corbin used. The traces on the sentries were clean green. No copper. Not Ironclaw.

Roland said nothing.

He had been saying nothing since the banquet. He told me, when he finally testified, that every silence had begun to weigh a little more than the one before it, and that by the third night, the weight of them all stacked on his chest was something he had to physically push against to breathe.

I did not know any of that yet. On the fourth night, I had problems of my own.

---

It came without warning.

I had been sitting at the inn table, reading. The lamp was low. My tea had gone cold an hour ago and I had not noticed. Then my left hand twitched against the page, and the bone inside my wrist popped — a small wet sound, like a knuckle cracking but deeper — and I knew.

I got down on the floor before it could throw me there.

The second crack came in my hip. The third in my shoulder. Not the controlled shift I had read about in pack texts, the one a wolf chooses and rides. This was the opposite of choice. Something inside me was forcing a door I had spent twenty-six years leaning against, and the hinges were giving.

Silver light went off behind my eyes like a flare. I pressed my palms to the cold floorboards and tried to find the breath.

*Not yet,* I told her. The same two words I had used at the banquet. *Not here. Not for nothing.*

She answered.

It was the first time I had ever heard her — not a voice exactly, more like a pressure that shaped itself into meaning. *Out.* Just that. *Out, out, out.* Seven years of suppression, and she had finally found the fracture, and she was not interested in waiting another minute.

I talked to her on the floor for forty minutes.

I do not remember most of what I said. I remember the taste of copper in my mouth. I remember my spine arching twice, hard, hard enough that I thought it would break. I remember whispering *I know, I know, I hear you, but if we go now we go in a roadside inn and nobody sees and it is wasted* — over and over, until the words turned into a rhythm, and the rhythm turned into something she could press her weight against without breaking through.

She slowed. She did not retreat. She settled — coiled, awake now, listening.

When the convulsions stopped, I lay on my back staring at the water stain on the ceiling, and I was crying for the first time since the banquet. Not from grief. From the simple physical relief of a body that had not been torn apart.

I got up. I crossed to the basin. The mirror showed me a woman I almost recognized.

My eyes were gold.

They held the color for three full seconds — long enough for me to see the shape of what was coming, the size of it, the way it sat behind my face like a second face — and then they faded back to brown.

The silver streak in my hair had widened. It ran from my temple to the crown now, a clean white river through the dark.

I looked at the woman in the mirror for a long time.

Then I went and found my coat.

---

The innkeeper's daughter was at the front desk, sleepy, half-eating an apple.

"I need another courier," I said. "Tonight. For the Lycan Court."

She blinked at me, and then at the silver in my hair, and went to fetch one without asking why.

I wrote the addendum at the desk in the lobby. Short. Clean. I requested that the tribunal be elevated to the full Lycan Council rather than a reduced panel, and I cited the scale of Silverfang's territorial deterioration and the severity of the public rejection as grounds. I did not explain why I needed the full chamber.

I knew why. The room I shifted in was going to matter.

I sealed the envelope, paid the rider, watched him ride out into the dark.

Then I went back to the dining room and ordered a full plate. Bread, meat, eggs, broth. I ate every bite. The innkeeper's wife watched me from the kitchen doorway with the careful expression of a woman who had seen guests come unraveled before, and I held her gaze while I drank the broth down to the bottom of the bowl.

I was going to need my strength.

She was awake now, and she was hungry, and the next time she rose she was not going to rise for nothing.
