Chapter 3

The first evening run happened at dusk, exactly as Zyaire had said.

I met him at the tree line wearing the shoes he'd given me and a borrowed jacket I'd found in the hall closet. The air smelled like pine and approaching rain. My wolf stirred faintly in my chest—not awake, not really, just aware in a way she hadn't been since the rejection.

Zyaire stood a few feet away, hands in his pockets, looking out at the forest like he was cataloging it.

"Ready?" he asked without turning.

"For what, exactly?"

"Scent acclimation. I told you."

"You told me nothing useful."

He turned then, and for the first time since I'd arrived, I saw something shift in his expression—not quite amusement, but close enough that I recognized the shape of it.

"Shift," he said. "We run."

I stared at him. "I can't."

"You can."

"My wolf is—" I stopped. Pressed my hand to my sternum where the hollow ache lived. "She's dormant. She's been dormant since the rejection. I can't shift properly."

Zyaire's gaze didn't waver. "Try anyway."

Something about the flatness of the command—no pity, no accommodation, just the expectation that I would attempt the thing I'd already said I couldn't do—made my spine straighten.

Fine.

I closed my eyes and reached for my wolf. She was there, barely—a flicker of awareness buried under layers of bond-shock and suppression. I pulled at her gently, then harder, trying to coax her forward.

Nothing.

I gritted my teeth and tried again. This time, something shifted. My bones ached. My skin prickled. I felt the beginning of the transformation start and then stall halfway, my body caught between forms in a way that felt wrong and exposed and humiliating.

I opened my eyes.

I was crouched on the ground in a half-shift—part human, part wolf, neither one complete. My hands were clawed but still recognizably hands. Fur rippled across my arms in patches. My wolf was there, awake enough to flicker, but too damaged to sustain anything more.

I looked up at Zyaire, waiting for the comment. The observation. The clinical assessment of my failure.

He said nothing.

Instead, he shifted.

The transformation was instant and absolute. One moment he was standing there in human form, the next he was a massive dark-furred Lycan wolf—easily twice the size of any pack wolf I'd ever seen, radiating a power that made the forest go quiet around him. His eyes were the same dark, unreadable gaze, but sharper now, more focused.

He turned and started running.

I stared after him for half a second, then scrambled to follow.

My half-shift was clumsy and slow. I couldn't manage the full four-legged gait, so I ran in a loping, uneven stride that burned through my muscles within minutes. The forest blurred past. Zyaire's dark form moved ahead of me, fluid and powerful, and I pushed harder, trying to keep up.

I couldn't.

He was pulling away—not deliberately, just naturally, the way a Lycan wolf would outpace a broken half-shift without even trying. The gap between us widened. My lungs burned. My wolf whimpered faintly in my chest, exhausted and ashamed.

Then Zyaire slowed.

Not obviously. Not in a way that drew attention to itself. He just... adjusted. His pace dropped to match mine exactly. The tree line started passing at a speed I could manage. He didn't look back. Didn't acknowledge the change. Just kept running, and suddenly I wasn't falling behind anymore.

I didn't realize what he'd done until we'd been running for twenty minutes and I noticed the rhythm—his stride, my stride, perfectly synchronized.

He'd matched me.

Something hot and unfamiliar tightened in my throat.

We ran until full dark, then circled back to the estate. By the time we reached the porch, my legs were shaking and my half-shift was flickering in and out like a dying lightbulb. I collapsed onto the steps, gasping, and forced myself back into human form. The transformation hurt coming and going.

Zyaire shifted back and stood there, not even winded.

"Tomorrow," he said. "Same time."

I looked up at him, still catching my breath. "Why?"

"Scent acclimation."

"That's not a real answer."

He looked at me for a long moment. Then he turned and walked inside without another word.

I sat on the porch steps alone, pressing my hand to my sternum. My wolf stirred again—not a flicker this time, but a sustained pulse, steady and awake in a way that frightened me.

I didn't know what was happening.

I didn't know if I wanted it to stop.

The third run ended the same way the first two had—with me half-collapsed on the porch steps and Zyaire disappearing inside without comment.

Except this time, he came back out twenty minutes later carrying two boxes of pizza and a look of vague annoyance.

"You didn't eat dinner," he said.

I blinked up at him. "Neither did you."

"I don't require regular meals. You do."

He set the boxes down on the porch railing and opened one. The smell hit me immediately—cheese, garlic, something with pepperoni. My stomach growled loudly enough that he raised an eyebrow.

"Eat," he said.

I took a slice because arguing seemed like more effort than I had left. We sat in silence for a few minutes, eating pizza on the porch while the forest settled into night sounds around us.

Then Zyaire said, without looking at me, "You were right about the horror movie."

I paused mid-bite. "What?"

"Last week. You said the monster's logic is internally consistent and the human characters are the actual problem. That's correct."

I stared at him. "You've been thinking about that for a week?"

"It was an accurate observation. I resent that you arrived at it faster than I did."

A laugh bubbled up in my chest before I could stop it—short and startled and entirely unexpected. I pressed my lips together immediately, like I could take it back.

Zyaire didn't look at me. He took another bite of pizza and said, "The sequel is worse. The humans make even less rational decisions."

"That's because they're operating on genre conventions instead of survival instinct," I said before I could stop myself.

He turned his head slightly. "Explain."

So I did. I explained why the sequel's characters were structurally doomed by the narrative's need to escalate stakes, why the monster's motivation shifted from hunger to revenge, why the entire third act collapsed under the weight of trying to set up a franchise.

Zyaire listened without interrupting. When I finished, he was quiet for a long moment.

Then he said, "I'm ordering this pizza again next week."

I looked at him, confused. "Why?"

"Because you'll eat it."

He stood, gathered the empty boxes, and walked inside.

I sat alone on the porch, staring at the spot where he'd been sitting, my wolf pulsing steadily in my chest.

I didn't understand what was happening.

But for the first time since the rejection, the silence didn't feel like drowning.
