Chapter 2

The coastal town of Cresthollow smelled like salt and old wood and nothing that could hurt me. I'd driven for eleven hours straight, crossing state lines, then county lines, then the unmarked border into unclaimed territory where Ironveil's mind-link couldn't reach. The silence in my head was absolute. No pack chatter. No Alpha commands threading through the background of my thoughts. Just the hollow space where my wolf used to speak, and beneath it, that low vibration I didn't have a name for yet.

I paid cash for the apartment above a harborside shop that sold fishing gear and postcards. The landlord didn't ask for references. Didn't ask which pack I came from. Just took the bills, handed me a key, and told me trash pickup was Thursdays.

The apartment had one room, a kitchenette, and a window that looked out over the harbor. The bed was against the far wall. I stood in the doorway for a full minute, staring at it, before I realized what felt wrong: I was calculating which side to take. Left, because Xander always slept on the right. Eight years of unconsciously accommodating him, and my body still expected the architecture of his presence.

I walked to the bed and sat down in the center.

It didn't feel like victory. It felt like the first true thing I'd done in a very long time.

On my second day I walked the harbor loop, Barnaby's leash loose in my hand. I hadn't planned to get a dog. Hadn't planned much of anything beyond driving until the mind-link silence held. But I'd walked past the shelter on a side street, heard a single bark from inside—low, ungainly, not the sharp yip of a small breed—and something in my chest pulled.

I went in.

The shelter smelled like disinfectant and wet fur. The woman at the desk looked up, smiled the practiced smile of someone who'd learned not to expect much, and asked if I wanted to meet anyone.

"The one who just barked," I said.

She led me to the back. Barnaby was in the third kennel from the end—a large mixed-breed with shaggy brown fur, one torn ear, and eyes that tracked me with the kind of steady attention that didn't beg. He sat when I approached. Didn't jump. Didn't whine. Just looked at me like he was waiting to see if I'd choose him or keep walking.

I knelt in front of the kennel door.

"Hey," I said quietly.

He tilted his head. The torn ear flopped.

Forty minutes later I left with him. The shelter woman looked relieved. She didn't say it, but I saw it in her face: he'd been there too long. Another week and they'd have had to make a decision.

I fed him before I ate myself. Every morning. A small ritual of constancy in the wreckage of everything else.

At night I slept in the middle of the bed with Barnaby at my feet, and the vibration beneath my ribs pulsed—low, rhythmic, like a second heartbeat I couldn't quite locate. It wasn't my wolf. My wolf was still gone, retreated into that unreachable darkness. This was something else. Something older. Something that had woken when the bond broke and the baby tore free and was now waiting, patient and enormous, just beneath the surface of my skin.

I didn't know what it was.

I wasn't afraid of it.

Three days after I arrived, I called Skyla. I hadn't unpacked yet. The apartment was still bare except for the bed, the dog, and the single duffel bag I'd carried out of Ironveil. I sat on the floor with my back against the wall, Barnaby's head in my lap, and dialed.

She answered on the first ring.

"Emma."

Her voice cracked on my name. Just once. Then she pulled it back together, because that was Skyla—she didn't perform grief, she converted it into action.

"Hey," I said.

The call lasted four hours.

We talked around it at first. The apartment. The harbor. Barnaby, who Skyla immediately declared sounded like a disaster and a half. I told her about the bed. She laughed—low, rough, the kind of laugh that wasn't quite humor but was close enough.

Then we stopped talking around it.

"He demoted me," Skyla said. Her voice was flat. Factual. "Formal assembly. Alpha tone. Defiance of a direct command during the rogue attack. I'm Omega now."

I closed my eyes. My hand stilled on Barnaby's head.

"When?"

"Two days after you left. He called the whole pack. Made me stand in front of them while he said it. Then I walked to the Omega quarters and no one said a goddamn word."

I could see it. Skyla standing straight, meeting his eyes for exactly one beat, then dropping her gaze in the required submission because she was too smart to give him an excuse to make it worse. Every warrior who'd trained under me watching. The silence that followed—not respect, but fracture.

"Emma," Skyla said quietly, "they know. They don't say it, but they know. What he did to you. What he is."

I opened my eyes. The encrypted drive sat on the table across the room, small and black and holding eight years of methodical documentation. Xander's wolfsbane trafficking. Every shipment. Every contact. Every transaction I'd quietly recorded because I'd wanted the truth preserved, even when I hadn't known whether I'd ever need it.

I stood, walked to the table, and picked it up.

"I need a timeline," I said. "Everything you remember. Every date, every name. Anyone who might testify if it came to that."

Skyla was quiet for a long moment.

Then: "What are you building?"

I looked out the window at the harbor, the water dark and vast and indifferent.

"His reckoning," I said.

It wasn't grief.

It was architecture.
