After My Alpha Rejected Me for His Mistress Novel Cover

After My Alpha Rejected Me for His Mistress

For five years, Josie stood at Alpha Desmond's right hand—until he rejected her in front of two hundred wolves, choosing his mistress Summer Hale. Then Summer limped in and forced a false vision through the mind-link: Josie's own silver-white wolf savaging her. But Josie was in Lycan territory that night, saving a stranger's Gamma. Desmond never asked where she had been. Now the pack brands her a traitor, and the sole witness to her innocence is the enemy she rescued—a dangerous bond that could shatter everything.

Chapter 2

The border-marker stones were cold under my boots at dawn. I stepped over them and felt the territorial line snap clean behind me — not like breaking, like letting go.

Lune surged up inside me, not grief-wild but sharp and clear, her voice filling the space where the bond used to sit. *We are free of it. All of it.*

I stopped walking. Three seconds. I pressed my fingertips together and felt the phantom ache where Desmond's mark had been, a cold spot on my neck that would fade but never quite disappear. My sternum still carried the crack-line from the rejection, a fracture I could map with my eyes closed.

Then I kept moving.

I had no pack. No rank. No territory. I had my field kit strapped across my back, my Healer's license still valid under Council law, and the faint trace of antidote herb on my hands from the Lycan Gamma I'd saved two nights ago. The borderland settlements were three days' walk south — rogue wolves, border-pack warriors, travelers who paid for Healer services with coin and shelter instead of loyalty. I would not be a ghost. I would be useful on my own terms.

The forest opened ahead of me, early light cutting through the pines. My boots found the trail without thought. I'd walked this route before, years ago, when I was still learning to carry the field kit without checking the straps every five minutes. Before Shadowridge. Before Desmond. Before I learned that being indispensable was not the same as being chosen.

Lune stretched inside me, testing the edges of our body now that the bond wasn't crushing her down. *You knew the splint was wrong the second she came through those doors.*

"I did."

*You waited.*

"I did."

*Good.* Her approval was cold and satisfied, the way a blade is satisfied when it finally cuts clean. *Let them all see it. Let him see it.*

I didn't answer. Desmond's face when I'd lifted the silver blade was already filing itself away in the part of my memory reserved for diagnoses I couldn't fix. Shock. Horror. The beginning of understanding arriving too late to matter.

Behind me, miles back through the forest, Shadowridge was waking up to what it had done.

Inside the great hall, Callum Reyes still stood where Summer's wolf had torn out of his arms. His hands were curved in the carrying posture, frozen mid-motion, and his face — visible to every ranked wolf who looked — wore the particular shame of someone who'd believed a performance so completely he'd helped stage it.

The silence after Summer crashed through the doors had lasted maybe ten seconds. Then the hall erupted into low, urgent clusters — warriors murmuring, ranked wolves exchanging glances, the kind of careful not-quite-looking-at-the-Alpha that meant everyone knew the ground had shifted and no one wanted to be first to say it out loud.

Desmond stood at the head table. His Alpha chain caught the firelight. His wolf was howling inside him, a sound only he could hear, the particular agony of a bond-death already in motion. He'd crushed it silent during the rejection vow, but it was back now, clawing at his ribs, and this time it wouldn't stop.

The Beta approached. His voice was quiet, formal, the tone of a subordinate trying very hard not to acknowledge that his Alpha had just made an irreversible mistake in front of two hundred witnesses. "Alpha. Instructions?"

Desmond's mouth opened. Nothing came out.

The Beta waited exactly three seconds. Then he turned to the hall and began issuing commands in the Alpha's name — clear the tables, dismiss the guests, post perimeter watch, business as usual, move along. His voice carried the authority Desmond's should have held. The ranked wolves obeyed without hesitation.

Desmond didn't stop him.

---

Summer returned to the pack grounds before dawn, human-form, wrapped in a borrowed cloak that smelled like the rogue who'd found her sprinting through the forest on four healthy legs. She didn't go to her own quarters. She went directly to the former Luna's rooms and knocked once, low and urgent.

The door opened immediately. The former Luna had been awake. She'd been awake since the banquet hall doors slammed shut behind Josie's retreating form, since her son stood frozen at the head table with his wolf dying inside him, since the entire pack watched Summer's fraud collapse in real time.

She looked at Summer now — no splint, no limp, no pretense — and did not ask whether the injury had been real. That question was past relevance.

Instead, she asked the only question that mattered. "What can be done now?"

Summer stepped inside and closed the door behind her. Her voice was clipped, sharp, stripped of the breathless warmth she used on Desmond. "We escalate."

The former Luna's eyes narrowed. "Explain."

"Shadowridge saw everything. We can't defend it here." Summer paced to the window, her reflection ghosting across the glass. "But the Lycan Council didn't see it. They'll see what we tell them."

"Which is?"

Summer turned. Her face was calm now, calculating, the performance dropped entirely. "That Josie Whitmore threatened my life with a silver weapon in front of the entire pack. Silver-weapon charges are capital offenses under Council law. We petition to strip her Healer rank and brand her a rogue."

The former Luna was quiet for a long moment. Then she crossed to her desk and pulled out formal petition parchment, the kind with the Council's seal embossed at the top. "Silver reframes her as the aggressor."

"Exactly." Summer's voice was steady. "It buries my — it buries the misunderstanding under a graver accusation. And it moves the venue from a pack hall where everyone has opinions to a Council chamber where testimony can be shaped."

The former Luna dipped her pen. "You'll need witnesses."

"Callum will testify. He carried me in. He'll say what he saw." Summer paused. "And you have Council connections."

The former Luna nodded slowly. Her hand moved across the parchment, formal legal language flowing in practiced script. By morning, the petition was drafted, signed, and sealed. By noon, it would be on its way to the Lycan Council's tribunal office.

Summer Hale was betting everything on the hope that institutional authority could be weaponized faster than truth could travel.

She had no idea that Josie's scent was already logged in the Lycan Prince's own checkpoint records, or that the Prince himself had been the one standing in the hall when she'd arrived to save his Gamma's life.

She had no idea that the woman she was trying to destroy had already been seen by the only wolf in the world who outranked every Alpha alive.
