Chapter 4

That evening, I walked the boundary line.

It wasn't something I did often. The edge of Moonveil territory was marked by old stone posts, half-buried in moss, and a scent ward so faint most wolves didn't notice it unless they were looking. But I knew where it was. I had walked it the night I arrived seven years ago, memorizing every curve, every gap, every place where the protection thinned.

Tonight, I needed to feel it under my feet.

The summit delegates were gathering at the main pack house for the ceremonial dinner. I had declined the invitation. Dominic hadn't pushed. He knew better.

I reached the western marker—a flat stone embedded in the hillside, carved with Moonveil's crest—and stopped. The wind was sharp tonight, carrying the salt smell of the ocean and something else. Something that made my wolf stir.

Footsteps.

I turned.

Spencer stood twenty feet away, just outside the boundary line. He was alone. No Beta. No escort. Just him, standing in the dark like he'd been waiting.

"Jocelyn," he said.

I didn't answer. I stayed where I was, one foot on Moonveil soil, the other on the neutral ground between us.

He took a step closer. "I have a right—"

"You have nothing," I said.

My voice was quiet. Cold. It cut through the wind like a blade.

Spencer stopped. His jaw tightened. "She's my daughter. Pack law states that unclaimed heirs—"

"She is not unclaimed," I said. "She is mine."

"That's not how bloodline works." His voice was rising now, the Alpha tone bleeding in at the edges. "You can't just take my child and—"

"I didn't take her." I stepped forward, crossing fully onto neutral ground. Spencer went still. "You threw her away. Seven years ago. When you put your hands on my throat and shoved me into that altar."

His face went white.

"You rejected the bond," I continued. My voice stayed level. Surgical. "You spoke the vow. You severed the mark. You buried an empty casket and moved on."

I reached up and pulled the collar of my jacket aside. The bond-scar—white, cold, dead—caught the moonlight.

"You rejected the bond that made her yours," I said. "She is no one's but mine."

Spencer stared at the scar. His hand went to his left forearm, pressing against the fabric of his sleeve. I knew what was underneath. The same mark. The same scar. Still bleeding, if the rumors were true.

"Jocelyn—" His voice cracked. "I didn't know. I didn't know you were pregnant. If I had—"

"You would have what?" I stepped closer. "Kept me? Let me stay long enough to give birth and then discarded me anyway? Or maybe you would have taken her and sent me away alone."

He didn't answer.

"It doesn't matter," I said. "You made your choice. I made mine."

I turned and walked back toward the boundary line.

"Wait—" Spencer lunged forward.

He stopped himself two feet from the marker. His body went rigid, his wolf slamming against the invisible barrier of pack law. You didn't cross into another Alpha's territory without invitation. Not unless you wanted war.

I stopped at the marker and looked back.

Spencer stood frozen, his chest heaving, his hands clenched into fists. His grey eyes—Everlee's eyes—were wild.

"Please," he whispered.

I said nothing.

Above us, on the ridge, I heard movement. Three figures materialized in the dark—Dominic's patrol. They didn't speak. They didn't need to. Their presence was answer enough.

No invitation extended.

I turned my back on Spencer and walked into Moonveil territory. Behind me, I heard him make a sound—low, broken, almost like a howl.

I didn't look back.

---

The next two days were a siege.

Spencer filed formal requests through the regional Council liaison. Paternal access petitions. Bloodline verification demands. Legal citations I had to read three times to understand.

I returned every document unsigned.

He attempted to intercept Everlee at the summit's public pack-run ceremony. Dominic's Gamma—a woman named Kira with a scar across her throat and zero tolerance for bullshit—materialized at Spencer's elbow and suggested he return to the main grounds. Spencer left.

A sealed gift package arrived at the Healer ward, addressed to Everlee by name. I returned it unopened through Moonveil's front desk. The junior receptionist looked confused. I didn't explain.

Dominic quietly adjusted the summit route maps. Silverfang's delegation was redirected away from the eastern residential wing. Everlee's school escort was reassigned to senior warriors—two Deltas who had been with Moonveil for over a decade and knew how to be invisible until they needed to be seen.

When Spencer's Beta—a man named Cole with a careful, diplomatic face—attempted to negotiate a private audience on his Alpha's behalf, Dominic's Gamma intercepted him at the pack house entrance.

I watched it all from the clinic window.

Spencer was unraveling. I could see it in the way he moved—too fast, too sharp, like his wolf was clawing at him from the inside. The phantom scent curse. The bond-scar that wouldn't stop bleeding. The daughter he could see but not touch.

I felt nothing.

That night, Dominic came to the clinic.

He knocked once and waited. I opened the door. He stood in the hallway, his hands in his pockets, his face calm.

"I granted Spencer an audience," he said.

I went still. "Why?"

"Because he asked," Dominic said. "And because I wanted to see what he'd say when there was no one else in the room."

I waited.

Dominic leaned against the doorframe. "He demanded acknowledgment of his paternal rights. His bloodline claim. He said you were legally exposed as a she-wolf who concealed an Alpha's heir for seven years."

"What did you say?"

Dominic's mouth curved, just slightly. "I told him you are my pack's Healer. You are under my protection. He is a guest. And guests act like guests."

I exhaled slowly.

"He tried to pull rank," Dominic continued. "Alpha aura. Full force. Filled the whole study."

"And?"

"I didn't move," Dominic said. "I didn't bare my neck. I didn't look away. I just sat there and waited."

I stared at him. "What happened?"

"He left," Dominic said. "Without another word."

Silence settled between us. Outside, the wind picked up, rattling the clinic windows.

"Thank you," I said quietly.

Dominic shook his head. "You don't need to thank me, Jocelyn. You never did."

He pushed off the doorframe and walked back down the hallway. I watched him go, then closed the door and locked it.

My hands were steady.

But my wolf—silent for seven years—stirred again. Stronger this time. Like something deep inside me was finally waking up.
