Chapter 5

Seraphine arrived at dawn.

I was waiting at the border clearing when I caught her scent—winter pine and old silver, the smell of home I hadn't breathed in years. She stepped through the tree line alone, wrapped in a dark cloak, her silver hair braided tight against her skull.

We didn't embrace. Not yet. The border guards rotated every two hours, and we had maybe fifteen minutes before the next patrol.

"You look terrible," she said quietly.

I almost laughed. "I've been worse."

She studied my face. Her eyes—pale grey, the Silvercrest mark—tracked the cracked bond on my neck, the hollows under my eyes, the way I held myself like something barely contained.

"Your wolf is close," she said. It wasn't a question.

"Too close," I admitted. "I don't know how much longer I can hold her."

Seraphine's mouth tightened. "Then we don't have time to waste."

I nodded. I pulled the folded parchment from my pocket—three pages, front and back, covered in my smallest handwriting. Ledger entries. Shipment coordinates. Crystal reference codes. Delivery routes. Every piece of evidence I'd memorized from the archive room, from Marcus's intel, from the supply crates I'd hauled across the courtyard.

She took it without looking at it. She would read it later, somewhere safe.

"The Lycan Council needs formal bloodline authentication," I said. My voice was low and fast. "If I invoke the sovereign clause without proof of Silvercrest lineage, they'll dismiss it as a rejected Luna grasping for legal loopholes. You're the only living witness who can testify to my suppression and my bloodline."

"I'll testify," Seraphine said. "I'll leave for the Council seat tonight. But Anastasia—" She stepped closer. Her hand gripped my wrist. "Once your wolf breaks free, there's no going back. The suppression has held for too long. When she comes, she will come violently."

"I know."

"And Kian will see exactly what he tried to keep buried."

I met her eyes. "Good."

For the first time, Seraphine smiled. It was small and fierce. "You always were too stubborn to break cleanly."

She pulled me into a brief, hard embrace. Her hand pressed against the back of my head, and I felt the old magic in her touch—the Silvercrest blessing, passed down through bloodlines, the kind that couldn't be faked or forged.

"Finish this," she whispered. "And come home."

Then she was gone, slipping back through the trees like a shadow.

I stood alone in the clearing and counted to sixty. Then I turned and walked back toward the pack house.

I had six days left.

I didn't know I had less than six hours.

---

The assembly bell rang at midday.

It wasn't a scheduled gathering. The sound cut through the pack house like a blade—three sharp tolls that meant every wolf was required to attend. No exceptions.

I was in my room when I heard it. My stomach dropped.

I dressed quickly. Grey again. Hair tied back. I touched the cracked mark on my neck once, briefly, and then I walked downstairs.

The main hall was already full. Four hundred wolves, maybe more. Deltas lined the walls. Gammas stood near the platform. The pack elders sat in their ceremonial seats along the sides. Everyone was looking at the head table.

Kian stood behind it. Cali stood beside him.

And on the stone table between them, laid out like evidence at a trial, was a single piece of parchment.

I felt my wolf stir. Not gently. She surged forward, and my hands clenched at my sides. I forced her back. Not yet. Not yet.

I walked to the center of the hall. Slowly. Every eye tracked me. The crowd parted. No one spoke.

I stopped ten feet from the platform.

Cali smiled.

"Anastasia Frost," she said. Her voice carried. Formal. Performative. "Step forward."

I stepped forward.

She picked up the parchment. She held it up so the entire hall could see.

"This," she said, "is a letter of alliance. Addressed to the Shadowmaw rogue pack. Offering territorial intelligence. Patrol schedules. Warrior positions." She paused. Let the words settle. "It bears the seal of Ironveil's Luna."

The hall erupted. Not loudly. Just a ripple of shock, spreading outward like a stone dropped in water.

I stared at the parchment. At the seal pressed into the wax at the bottom.

My old Luna seal. The one I hadn't used in months. The one I thought was locked in the archive room.

Cali's smile widened. She began reading aloud.

"'In exchange for territorial concessions along the northern border, I offer the following intelligence: Delta rotation schedules, ward maintenance gaps, and supply route vulnerabilities. Ironveil's current leadership is weakened. The time to strike is now.'"

She looked up. Directly at me.

"Your handwriting," she said. "Your seal. Your treason."

I didn't move. I didn't speak. My mind was racing.

The letter was a forgery. Obviously. The language was wrong—too blunt, too obvious. I would never write a conspiracy letter that read like a confession. And the seal had been stolen, not used.

But four hundred wolves didn't know that. They just knew what they were hearing.

Kian rose. His chair scraped against stone. The sound cut through the murmurs like a knife.

He walked to the edge of the platform. His eyes were blazing gold. His Alpha aura rolled off him in waves, thick and oppressive, pressing down on every wolf in the hall.

Except me.

I felt it. But it didn't lock.

"Kneel," Kian said. His voice was low. Commanding. The Alpha tone threaded through every syllable. "And confess."

The command hit me like a fist to the chest.

My knees buckled. My body lurched forward. My wolf howled inside me, clawing, fighting, but my legs were already bending. The Alpha tone was ancient magic, older than packs, woven into the hierarchy itself. It didn't ask. It demanded.

My knees touched the stone.

The hall went silent.

I knelt there, head bowed, hands pressed flat against the cold floor. My breath came in short, shallow gasps. My vision blurred at the edges.

But my knees didn't stay.

Slowly—so slowly it felt like moving through water—I pushed myself up.

My legs shook. My hands trembled. But I rose.

I stood.

The hall exhaled. A collective breath. Shock rippling outward again.

Kian's jaw tightened. His eyes narrowed. Just slightly.

He had felt it. The gap. The weakness.

The severed bond had broken his hold.

I kept my head bowed. I kept my hands at my sides. I didn't look at him.

But I was standing.

And four hundred wolves had just watched his Alpha tone fail.
