Chapter 5

The envoy arrived at midday.

I was in the eastern courtyard with Rowe when the horn sounded from the outer gate—two short blasts, one long. Shadowridge colors. My hand tightened around the wooden training staff. Rowe glanced at me, and I saw the question in his eyes: do we stop?

"Finish the set," I said.

We finished the set.

By the time I walked into the great hall, the envoy was already standing in the center of the marble floor. Not Calvin. Not Natasha. A tall, broad-shouldered wolf with cropped hair and the stiff posture of a man who had never once been told no. Derek Cole. Calvin's Gamma. I remembered him from Shadowridge—remembered the way he'd looked through me for eight years like I was furniture.

He looked through me now, too.

Desmond sat at the far end of the hall on a low stone chair that wasn't quite a throne. Marcus stood beside him. Neither of them spoke. The silence in the hall was the kind that pressed against your skin.

Marcus unfolded the document.

"By order of Alpha Calvin Scott of the Shadowridge Pack," he read, his voice flat and controlled, "the she-wolf known as Hope Ellis is formally recalled to Shadowridge territory to serve as pack healer under the direct command of Luna Natasha Bell. Compliance is required within seven days. Failure to appear will result in the subject being declared rogue and marked for pursuit by every allied pack under the Shadowridge banner."

He lowered the document.

Derek stood at parade rest, waiting.

I walked forward and held out my hand. Marcus passed me the paper without a word.

I read it once. Then I read it again. The wording was exactly what Calvin's ego required—not a request, not a negotiation, an order. As if I were still his to command. As if the eight years he'd spent burying my wolf had left me too broken to do anything but obey.

I folded the document carefully along its original crease.

Then I looked up at Desmond.

He was watching me. Perfectly still. And for the first time since I'd arrived in Ironveil, something moved at the edge of his mouth—the ghost of a smile that wasn't warmth. It was the expression of a man who had been waiting a very long time for his enemy to reach for exactly the wrong thing.

Something in me answered it.

I felt my own mouth curve. Not much. Just enough.

Marcus took a small step backward.

I turned to Derek. My voice, when it came, was soft and unhurried, the way I'd learned to speak when I was most dangerous.

"Tell Alpha Scott," I said, "that I will prepare a response worthy of the honor he offers."

Derek's jaw tightened with satisfaction. He'd expected resistance. He'd gotten submission. He didn't know the difference between the two anymore, and neither did the man who'd sent him.

"Three days," I said. "Return in three days for the package."

He inclined his head—not quite a bow—and turned on his heel.

When the doors closed behind him, I looked back at Desmond.

He didn't say anything. He didn't have to.

---

The apothecary was in the lower level of the compound, a long, low-ceilinged room lined with drying racks and glass jars and the faint, ever-present smell of crushed root.

I worked alone.

I'd asked for the space, and Marcus had cleared it without question. No healers. No observers. Just me and the ingredients I'd been quietly requisitioning for the past week—moonpetal root, silverleaf, dawn sage, three grades of ceremonial oil, the specific mineral salts a Luna strengthening tonic required to bind properly.

And, in a small dark jar on the highest shelf, wolfsbane. Refined. Calibrated. Not enough to kill.

Just enough to cripple.

My hands moved without hesitation. The formula was old—older than Shadowridge, older than most packs still standing. Only a Luna-blood could compound it at the correct potency. Calvin had never learned. Calvin had never needed to learn.

Because I had always done it for him.

I ground the moonpetal root to powder. Measured the silverleaf against a copper scale. Warmed the ceremonial oil to precisely the temperature the binding required—not a degree over, not a degree under. The wolfsbane went in during the third pass, when the compound was already dark enough to hide the shift in color, already fragrant enough to mask the faint bitterness underneath.

Somewhere in the middle of the second evening, I heard the door open behind me.

I didn't turn.

I knew the weight of his silence by now.

Desmond crossed the room slowly and stopped near the far wall. Not close. Not asking. Just there. I could feel him watching—not the tonic, but me. The line of my shoulders. The steadiness of my hands.

He did not ask what was in it.

He did not ask what I planned.

He stood in that room with me for a long time, and then he turned and walked out without speaking a single word.

I didn't stop working. I didn't look after him. I didn't let myself name what it meant that a man with the authority to end Calvin's life with a single command had chosen instead to stand silently in a room and trust me to end it my own way.

I sealed the jar with the traditional wax.

I pressed the ceremonial blessing into the seal with my own thumb.

I wrote the accompanying note in the deferential, small-handed script Calvin had trained me to use—the handwriting of a woman who knew her place. *Alpha Scott. For the Luna. Prepared with the blessings of my bloodline, as tradition requires. I remain your servant. Hope.*

I wrapped the package in the traditional red silk.

And on the third morning, I placed it in Derek Cole's hands myself.

His relief was visible. He'd been afraid, I realized, that he would have to drag me back. He tucked the package under his arm like a trophy and mind-linked Calvin before he had even cleared Ironveil's outer gate. I could see it in the way his eyes went distant, then focused, then filled with the smug satisfaction of a subordinate delivering the news his master wanted to hear.

She capitulated. She sent the tonic.

I stood at the gate and watched him ride out.

---

The scout's mind-link came through the following night.

I was in the war room with Marcus and two of Desmond's Betas when the connection opened—a thin, borrowed thread, clean of emotion, just images and sound relayed from a spy embedded three ranks deep in Shadowridge's Gamma corps.

The pack house dining hall. Calvin at the head of the long table, relaxed for the first time in weeks, a wine glass in his hand. Natasha to his right, my package unwrapped in front of her, the red silk pooled across the table like blood.

She was smiling.

"—perfect timing," she was saying. "The war games are in six days. Every allied Alpha in the region will be watching. A pre-combat blessing ceremony. Public. Ceremonial. Every warrior in Calvin's inner circle drinks first, then me, then we shift together on the field."

Calvin lifted his glass to her.

"A demonstration of Shadowridge's Luna strength," he said. "Precisely what the alliance needs to see."

Natasha lifted the sealed jar. Turned it in her hand. Ran her thumb over the blessing I had pressed into the wax with my own skin.

Her smile widened.

"To the new Luna," Calvin said.

She raised the jar.

"To the new Luna," she agreed.
