Chapter 3

The first sign reached me three days after I arrived at Silvercrest.

I was organizing the herb stores when Marcus appeared in the doorway of the healing ward. He didn't knock. He just stood there, holding a folded piece of parchment.

"Donovan sent a mind-link," he said.

I set down the jar of dried valerian root. My hands didn't shake. "I severed the pack bond."

"He tried anyway." Marcus crossed the room and handed me the parchment. "This came through official channels. A formal request."

I unfolded it. The words were written in Donovan's precise handwriting, the kind he used for territorial agreements and alliance contracts.

*Peyton Mills, former healer of Black Hollow Pack. Your immediate return is required to address a medical emergency affecting multiple warriors. This request is made under the authority of—*

I stopped reading.

Luna stirred weakly. *He's lying.*

I knew that. There was no emergency Donovan couldn't handle with potions and rest. He had three other healers in Black Hollow. They weren't lunar-gifted, but they were competent.

I folded the parchment and handed it back to Marcus. "Tell him no."

Marcus studied my face. "August wants to know if you'd like him to respond formally. Through the Lycan council."

"What would that mean?"

"It would mean Donovan can't contact you again without your explicit consent. Any attempt would be filed as a territorial violation."

I pressed my fingertips together. The thought of Donovan's voice in my head—commanding, requesting, whatever tone he chose next—made my chest tighten.

"Yes," I said. "Tell August yes."

Marcus nodded once and left.

I stood there in the quiet healing ward, surrounded by empty shelves and clean light, and felt nothing at all.

---

The moonpetals appeared two mornings later.

I found them outside the healing ward door when I arrived at dawn. A small bundle, wrapped in linen, tied with rough twine. No note. No explanation.

I knelt and unwrapped them carefully. Moonpetals were rare—they only grew at high altitudes, in places where the air was thin and cold. The petals glowed faintly in the early light, silver-white, delicate as paper.

I had used moonpetals exactly once, years ago, when a warrior at Black Hollow had taken a poisoned blade to the chest. The petals could draw out toxins that normal healing couldn't touch. But they were expensive, difficult to source, and Donovan had made it clear that using them required his explicit approval.

I stared at the bundle in my hands.

Luna stirred. *Someone traveled a full day to get these.*

I knew. The nearest moonpetal grove was a day's journey in wolf form, longer in human form. Whoever had gone had done it recently—the petals were still fresh, their glow undimmed.

I looked down the empty hallway. No one was there.

I carried the bundle inside, set it on my worktable, and tried not to think about who might have left it.

---

The pack runs happened at dawn, three times a week.

I joined the first one because Marcus told me it was expected. I shifted at the edge of the forest, my wolf form smaller and lighter than most of the others. Luna was silver-white, lean, built for speed rather than dominance.

The pack gathered in loose formation. August stood at the front, massive even in human form. When he shifted, his wolf was black-furred and easily twice my size. A Lycan wolf. I had seen them before, but never this close.

The run started.

I expected August to lead from the front, the way Donovan always had. Alphas ran ahead. It was how they established dominance, how they set the pace.

But August didn't.

He fell back. Not to the rear, but to the middle of the pack. And then he moved beside me.

I glanced at him, startled. His wolf was close enough that I could feel the heat radiating from his fur. He didn't look at me. He just ran, matching my pace exactly.

Luna stirred, confused. *Why isn't he leading?*

I didn't know.

We ran through the forest, the pack spreading out around us. August stayed beside me the entire time. When I slowed to navigate a fallen log, he slowed. When I picked up speed on an open stretch, he matched it.

It felt wrong. Not bad wrong. Just—unfamiliar.

When the run ended, I shifted back to human form and found my clothes where I'd left them. August was already dressed, standing near the tree line, speaking quietly to Marcus.

He didn't look at me.

I walked back to the healing ward alone, feeling the ghost of his presence still running beside me.

---

Donovan's second message came through Roland.

I was in the healing ward when Marcus appeared again, this time with August beside him. August's expression was unreadable.

"Roland Voss is at the border," Marcus said. "Donovan's Beta. He's requesting a meeting with you."

My stomach tightened. "What does he want?"

"He says it's urgent. A pack emergency."

I looked at August. He was watching me with that same steady, patient attention I was starting to recognize. He didn't speak.

"I'm not going," I said.

August nodded slowly. "Do you want me to send him back?"

"Yes."

"With a message?"

I thought about it. About Donovan standing in Black Hollow, realizing his mind-links weren't reaching me. About Roland traveling all the way to Silvercrest's border because Donovan couldn't accept that I was gone.

"Tell him I'm under Silvercrest's protection," I said. "And that any further contact will be filed as a territorial violation."

August's expression didn't change, but something shifted in his eyes. Approval, maybe. Or satisfaction.

"I'll handle it," he said.

He left with Marcus, and I stood there in the healing ward, feeling the space where Donovan's voice used to sit in my head. It was still empty. Still raw.

But for the first time, the emptiness felt like relief.

---

That night, I found Pixel in the hallway outside my quarters.

He was sitting against the wall, knees pulled to his chest, staring at nothing. When he saw me, he didn't move.

I stopped. "Hi."

"Hi."

"Are you okay?"

He nodded, but his eyes said otherwise.

I crouched down beside him. "Do you want to come inside?"

He hesitated. Then he stood and followed me into my quarters.

I didn't have much—just a small room with a bed, a desk, and a chair. But it was warm, and the enchanted pelt was draped across the bed, still radiating heat.

Pixel sat on the floor near the door. I sat across from him.

"Did something happen?" I asked.

He shook his head. Then, after a long pause, he said, "Are you going to leave?"

The question hit me harder than it should have.

"No," I said. "I'm staying."

"Promise?"

I looked at him—this small boy with too-old eyes, who had already lost more than I could imagine.

"I promise," I said.

He nodded once, like that was enough. Then he stood and left, his footsteps quiet on the stone floor.

I sat there alone, feeling the weight of the promise settle over me like the enchanted pelt.

Luna stirred. *We meant it.*

I knew we did.
