Chapter 5

The treaty withdrawal letters arrived on a Tuesday.

I heard Finn before I saw him. The bond slammed open the way it always did when he was too angry to remember he had manners—hot and blunt, no knock, no warning.

*You did this.* His voice through the channel was shaking. *You went to Vance. You went to Corrin. You sat in rooms with my allies and you poisoned them against me and now I have two withdrawal letters on my desk before noon—*

I was standing at the window of my private study. The morning was gray, the kind of gray that sits on the tree line like a held breath. I watched a crow land on the fence post below and tilt its head.

I let him finish.

He went on for a while. *Undermining. Deliberate. Jealous. Petty.* The same words, the same register—I had them memorized by now. I could have written the next sentence before he said it.

When the channel went quiet I said, evenly: *Both packs cited the same section of the same treaty in their withdrawal letters. Section seven. The clause requiring Luna sign-off on all diplomatic continuations. I authored that clause. I negotiated it into both agreements because I knew, eight years ago, that pack leadership transitions create instability. I was protecting Nighthollow.*

A pause.

*I can restore both treaties by end of week,* I said. *If you wish.*

His answer came back fast and ugly: *You're bluffing.*

I closed the bond-channel from my side. The crow on the fence post opened its wings and was gone.

I sat down at my desk and opened the notebook to a clean page.

---

Silas kept the Come of Age records in a cabinet that had not been dusted since the previous Lead Elder's tenure. He was that kind of man—meticulous about content, indifferent to surfaces.

He poured tea without asking if I wanted any. I accepted the cup.

"The ceremony protocols from the last decade," he said, setting a folder on the table between us. "As requested."

"Thank you, Silas." I let a moment pass. I turned a page in the folder without reading it. "While I have you—a procedural question. Historical. For my own understanding of the archive."

He waited. He had the patience of someone who had been reading pack law for forty years.

"The Mate Covenant's betrayal clause," I said. "Has it ever been tested? In the Pacific Northwest, or in any pack whose records we hold?"

Silas went very still.

Not the stillness of surprise. The stillness of a man who has just understood something he had been almost-understanding for weeks.

He set his teacup down. He looked at the table for a long moment. Then he looked at me.

"It has not been invoked," he said carefully, "in any recorded pack history I am aware of."

"I see." I made a small note. "The tribunal procedural documents—would those be in the main archive or the restricted section?"

His jaw moved once. "The restricted section. Under the Covenant subcategory." A pause. "I can locate them."

"I would appreciate that. No urgency." I closed the folder and stood. "Thank you for your time, Silas. The ceremony records are exactly what I needed."

I left the tea half-finished on his table.

I did not look back, but I knew he was still sitting there when I turned the corner at the end of the hall. I could feel the shape of his stillness behind me—a man alone in a study, holding a thought he had not finished yet, turning it over in both hands.

---

I smelled it before I reached the door.

It was late. The pack house was quiet, the formal wing empty, the corridor lit by the low amber strips along the baseboard. My footsteps were the only sound.

I stopped three feet from my own door.

Everlee's scent was there. Not inside—not yet. But pressed against the threshold like a signature. Deliberate. Layered. The kind of scent-mark that requires repeated passes, not an accidental brush. She had stood here. She had stood here more than once.

At the door of my private ceremonial quarters. The room that held the Mark Ceremony records, the ancestral pack banners, the mating cuffs that Finn had forged from Nighthollow silver with his own hands the year we were bound.

I stood in the corridor and I read the scent the way I had learned to read everything without a wolf—with patience, with precision, with the part of me that did not flinch.

Then I took my phone from my pocket. I crouched and photographed the threshold. The timestamp read 11:47 p.m.

I straightened. I unlocked my door and went inside.

I sat at the writing desk in the corner—the one I had used for eight years to draft treaties, correspondence, pack law briefs—and I opened a clean document.

At the top of the page I wrote: *Formal Demand for Pack Tribunal, submitted under the Mate Covenant's Betrayal Clause, Section—*

I stopped.

I looked at the mating cuffs on their stand beside the window, silver in the lamplight, still bearing the small ragged marks from a pup's teeth.

I looked back at the page.

I finished the sentence.
