Chapter 3

I was in the kitchen at five-forty in the morning.

I did not need to be. The staff would not arrive until six. The pack would not stir until seven. I had chosen the hour precisely because I knew Everlee would come down before the rest of them—she had been doing it for weeks now, taking coffee back up to Finn's rooms in a mug she was not entitled to touch.

I ground the beans myself. I liked the sound.

The kettle hissed. I stood at the counter with my back half-turned to the door, listening. I had learned, without a wolf, to hear the way other wolves entered a room—the small shift in air pressure, the change in the way sound carried. Everlee moved lightly. She did not know I could hear her anyway.

She stopped in the doorway.

I did not turn.

"Luna Meredith." Her voice was already thin. She had not expected me. She had been counting on the same empty kitchen I had been counting on. "I didn't— I can come back—"

"Come in, Everlee."

She came in.

I poured my coffee. I did not offer her one. I set the pot back on the burner and I turned, slowly, and I let the shield drop.

Eight years.

Eight years of holding the Luna aura wrapped tight against my chest like a folded coat, letting only the edges show in public—enough to steady a room, never enough to press it. I had trained myself into that restraint the way a swordsman trains himself never to draw fully in a crowd. It was a discipline. It was, I understood now, also a habit of making myself smaller.

I stopped.

The aura came out of me the way a held breath leaves a body—not violent, not loud, just the full unmediated weight of what I actually was. Eight years of pack law. Eight years of alliances built and warriors trained and borders held. Eight years of a wolfless woman ruling a pack of predators through sheer presence.

The air in the kitchen went dense.

Everlee's cup hit the counter. She had not dropped it—her hand had opened. There was a difference. Her wolf had taken the decision away from her fingers before her mind could catch up.

Her head dropped. Her chin went to her chest and then past it. Her throat came up and back, the pale line of it exposed, the pulse fluttering visible at the hollow. Her knees bent halfway before she caught herself against the counter. She was breathing in small dry gasps through her nose.

She could not look at me.

I took a sip of coffee. It was very good.

"Everlee."

A sound came out of her that was not a word.

"Look at me."

Her wolf would not let her. I watched her try. I watched the muscles in her neck strain against the submission her own body had locked her into, and I watched them lose.

I stepped closer. Not much. One step.

"The next item you touch that belongs to me," I said, in the voice I use when I want a sentence to be remembered word for word, "will be the last decision you make inside this pack's borders."

She made the sound again.

I walked past her to the sink. I rinsed the cup. I set it upside down on the drying rack. I pulled the aura back into my chest, folded it, tucked it away, and by the time I turned toward the door Everlee was still bent over the counter with her hands flat against the tile, shaking.

I left her there.

---

I was halfway up the stairs when Finn hit the bond.

He did not knock at it the way a mate should. He kicked. The bond-channel between us slammed open on his side, hot and jagged, and underneath it—underneath his fury—I felt something else. Something that should not have been there.

Everlee.

Her terror, raw and secondhand, threaded through Finn's rage like a wire through cloth. Not from the mate bond. From somewhere else. A separate channel, one-sided, running from her to him.

He had opened a mind-link with her.

An Alpha does not do that. An Alpha does not maintain an active private mind-link with an unmated she-wolf outside the pack's formal communication protocols. It is a bond-violation with a name in the Covenant. It has its own subsection.

I stopped on the stairs and put my hand on the banister.

*What did you just do to her.* His voice through the bond was shaking. *I felt it, Meredith. I felt her go down. You used your aura on a subordinate. In my pack house.*

My pack house.

I closed my eyes for one second.

*Finn.*

*Don't. Don't you dare—*

*You are broadcasting her fear to me through our bond. I can feel her heart rate. I can feel the shape of her lungs. Do you understand what you have just told me?*

Silence on his end. A hitched, furious silence.

*Thank you for confirming that,* I said.

I closed the channel from my side.

I stood on the stairs a moment longer. Then I went up to the archive, opened the notebook, and wrote it down. Time. Date. The exact texture of Everlee's terror in the channel. The word *my* in front of *pack house*. I numbered the entry.

Five.

---

The assignment went up on the board before lunch.

I heard about it before I saw it. Elena came into the archive without knocking, which she had never done in eight years, and stood in the doorway with her arms already crossing.

"He's taking her to the border inspection."

I did not look up. "In what capacity."

"Companion of the Alpha. Posted formal." Her jaw was tight. "That's a Beta seat, Luna. Or yours."

"I know what seat it is."

She did not move from the doorway. She was waiting to be told what to do. I looked at her—really looked—and I saw a senior warrior I had trained myself, standing in my archive at midday asking permission to be angry on my behalf.

"Elena."

"Luna."

"Note who attends. Note who speaks to him. Note who does not."

She understood. Her chin dipped—that same small movement from the dining hall board, quieter than a bow. She was gone before I finished writing.

I did not go to the inspection.

I heard about it in pieces through the afternoon. The three Gamma-track she-wolves who saw Everlee at Finn's shoulder and looked at each other and said nothing—a silence Elena described to me later as *loud enough to hear in the trees*. The allied delegates from Silver Ridge and two other packs, standing at the border markers, watching Finn present a woman who was not his Luna and receiving her name with the flat courtesy diplomats use when they are already composing the message they will send home.

By sundown one of those messages had been sent.

I did not see it. I did not need to. I could feel the shape of it the way I could feel the shape of Everlee's lungs through the bond Finn had cracked open by accident that morning—a small definite thing, moving through the air toward Alpha Vance's desk at Silver Ridge, five words that would arrive before midnight.

*Nighthollow's Luna was not present.*

I sat in the archive as the light went low across the pack house roofs, and I felt the door in my chest press against its frame, patient now, almost curious.

I let it wait.
