After My Alpha Poisoned My Wolf for His Mistress Novel Cover

After My Alpha Poisoned My Wolf for His Mistress

Forty-three minutes in a too-tight white dress, her half-formed mark beating like a second heart. Then, at 10:14 on a Tuesday, the bond snapped. Two hundred Ironclaw wolves ringed the clearing, pity hardening into something colder as the truth moved through the pack: her Alpha had poisoned her wolf for his mistress. Everyone knew. A child's question was hushed. The moon climbed higher. The girl who should have been Luna stood alone, shaking, while her world cracked open—and the night swallowed the life she was promised.

Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night.

I knew the exact moment because I'd been standing at the ceremonial altar for forty-three minutes, watching the moon climb higher while my half-formed mark pulsed against my neck like a second heartbeat. The white dress they'd fitted three days ago felt too tight across my ribs. My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

The entire Ironclaw Pack surrounded the clearing in a silent circle. Two hundred wolves, all waiting. I could feel their eyes on my back—pity at first, then something colder. The murmurs started low, a ripple of whispers I couldn't quite catch. Someone coughed. A child asked a question and was shushed.

Miles wasn't coming.

I knew it the way you know a storm is close before the first drop falls. But I didn't move. Couldn't. If I left the altar, it meant admitting what was happening. So I stood there, fingers locked together so tight my knuckles went white, and told myself there had to be an explanation. An emergency. A mistake.

The mark on my neck stopped tingling. Started aching instead.

Beta Elliot approached from the edge of the clearing, his face carefully blank. "Quinn," he said quietly. "Maybe you should—"

"No." My voice came out steadier than I expected. "He'll be here."

Elliot's jaw tightened. He looked at me the way you look at something broken that you're not allowed to fix. Then he stepped back into the crowd.

I waited until I couldn't anymore.

The walk from the clearing to the pack house felt longer than it should have. My legs moved on autopilot while my mind spun in tighter and tighter circles. Seven years. We'd been together seven years. He'd promised. He'd looked me in the eye two weeks ago and promised.

I took the stairs to the Alpha suite two at a time.

The door was unlocked. I pushed it open and the first thing that hit me was the scent—thick, floral, completely wrong. Not mine. Not Miles's. Something polished and deliberate, like perfume designed to saturate every surface it touched.

Vanessa Cortez was draped across Miles's chest on the bed, her dark hair spilling over his shoulder. The marking bite on her neck was fresh. Still bleeding a little at the edges.

Miles looked up. Saw me standing in the doorway. Didn't move.

"Quinn." His voice was flat. Annoyed, like I'd interrupted something minor. "You shouldn't be here."

I couldn't breathe. Couldn't think past the roaring in my ears. "The ceremony," I managed. "Everyone's waiting. We—"

"There's no ceremony." He sat up slowly, deliberately, keeping one arm around Vanessa's waist. "I thought that was obvious."

Vanessa's eyes met mine. She smiled. Not surprised. Not even pretending to be.

"Seven years," I said. My voice cracked on the second word. "You promised me—"

"I tolerated you." Miles swung his legs off the bed and stood, pulling on his shirt with the same unhurried precision he used for everything. "There's a difference."

Something inside my chest cracked. Not the bond yet—that was still holding by a thread—but something deeper. "The treatments," I whispered. "I went through the treatments for you. To heal your wolf. I lost—"

"Your wolf was already defective." He buttoned his shirt, not looking at me. "The treatments just made it obvious."

I stepped forward without thinking. "Miles, please—"

He walked past me. Through the door. Out into the hall.

I followed.

The pack was still waiting in the clearing when we emerged from the tree line. Two hundred faces turned toward us. Toward Miles, walking with the easy confidence of a man who'd already decided how this would end. Toward me, stumbling after him in a white dress that suddenly felt like a costume.

Miles stopped in the center of the clearing. Turned to face me. His expression was calm. Rehearsed.

"I, Miles Harker, Alpha of the Ironclaw Pack," he said, his voice carrying across the silent crowd, "reject you, Quinn Ashford, as my mate."

The Alpha tone hit me like a fist. My knees buckled. I went down hard on the grass, hands catching my weight, the white dress pooling around me like spilled milk.

The bond cracked through my chest. Not a clean break—a jagged, tearing thing that left shards behind. The mark on my neck went ice-cold. Then empty. Like a door slamming shut in a room that had already been abandoned.

Miles looked down at me. "Your wolf is dormant," he said to the assembled pack, not to me. "The Moon Goddess doesn't make mistakes. She never intended Quinn for me. I kept her out of charity. That ends tonight."

Someone in the crowd sucked in a breath.

"Effective immediately," Miles continued, "Quinn Ashford is reclassified as Omega. She'll serve as personal attendant to Vanessa Cortez, my chosen mate and future Luna of this pack."

Vanessa stepped forward from the tree line, already dressed, already composed. She looked at me kneeling in the grass and smiled that same cold, unsurprised smile.

Deep in the back of my mind, my wolf stirred. Not a howl. A snarl—low and incandescent, the first sound it had made in years. Then the wolfsbane I'd been dosed with for seven years clamped down again, and the sound cut off like a severed wire.

I didn't beg. Didn't cry. I pressed my palms flat against the cold ground and pushed myself upright on shaking legs.

Miles had already turned away.

Vanessa handed me a bucket before the crowd had fully dispersed. The water inside smelled wrong—metallic, bitter. Silver-laced.

"Scrub the pack house floors," she said pleasantly. "On your hands and knees. Start in the main hall."

I took the bucket. My palms blistered within three minutes of touching the water. By five minutes, the skin was peeling. Vanessa watched from the doorway, arms crossed, while two Deltas lingered nearby pretending not to stare.

When my grip faltered, Vanessa walked over and planted her boot heel on my burned fingers. Ground down. Slowly. Deliberately. Like she was testing how much pressure it would take.

"Omegas who can't finish basic tasks," she said to the Deltas, not to me, "don't get fed."

I kept my face blank. Kept my hands moving. One of the Deltas looked away. Then the other. Vanessa lifted her boot and walked out.

That night, alone in the cellar they'd assigned me—bare stone, no blanket, a single barred window too high to reach—I pressed my burned hands flat against the floor. The pain clarified something.

I pulled my small pack from the corner and retrieved the journal I'd kept since college. Opened to the first blank page. Wrote a single heading in careful block letters: *Names.*

Miles came to the cellar the next morning. Crouched to my eye level like he was talking to a child.

"You owe me your life, Quinn," he said quietly. "I pulled you out of that rogue's jaws when we were kids. Everything you gave me after that was just paying the debt."

I looked at him. Didn't answer.

"Your wolf is dormant because the Moon Goddess agreed with me," he continued. "A wolfless Omega with no rank and no mate has one useful function. Compliance. Provide that, and you'll be fed and housed. Don't, and Ironclaw's borderlands are full of rogues who won't ask questions."

He stood. Walked to the door. Paused with his hand on the frame.

"It was always going to end this way," he said.

I waited until his footsteps faded. Then I opened my journal to the second page and began to write. Date. Time. Exact wording. The number of seconds he'd held eye contact before looking away.

Fourteen.
