Chapter 2

I arrived at the pack house before dawn. The building was dark except for the security lights along the perimeter. I parked in my usual spot and sat for a moment, watching the sky shift from black to deep blue.

My wolf was silent now. The howling had stopped somewhere around midnight. What remained was something harder. Colder. A clarity I hadn't felt in twenty years.

I gathered the documents I'd printed. Financial transfers. Territory registrations. Healer records showing Rose Jenkins bearing Mathias's mark. Photographs of a family I'd never been told existed.

The evidence was thorough. Undeniable. And about to destroy everything Mathias thought he'd built.

I walked into the pack house and went directly to my study. Turned on the lights. Set the documents on my desk in neat stacks. Then I sent out the mind-link to the three elders currently in residence.

They arrived within twenty minutes. Elder Voss came first, his grey hair still damp from a hasty shower. Elder Cross followed, her healer's bag over one shoulder out of habit. Elder Thorne was last, his expression wary the moment he saw my face.

"Luna," Voss said carefully. "Your message said this was urgent."

"Sit," I said.

They sat.

I slid the first document across the desk. "Mathias Larson performed a dual marking seven years ago. This is the registration with a minor pack outside Los Angeles. Rose Jenkins. Three pups."

Voss picked up the paper. His face went very still.

"Dual marking is forbidden," Cross said quietly. "The Moon Goddess doesn't—"

"I'm aware," I said. "Here are the financial records showing monthly transfers to maintain a hidden territory. Here are the healer documents listing Rose as his marked mate. Here are photographs from last Thanksgiving showing my children running with his illegitimate pups."

I laid each stack down with deliberate precision. Watched their faces shift from shock to horror to something that looked like grief.

Thorne cleared his throat. "Luna, this is—"

"A spiritual violation," I finished. "A betrayal of the mate bond. And grounds for formal rejection proceedings."

The room went absolutely silent.

Voss looked up at me. "Helena, if you reject the bond—"

"I am rejecting the bond," I said. "I'm initiating proceedings immediately. And I'm freezing every resource tied to my bloodline until this is resolved."

Cross's eyes widened. "The healer network—"

"Is mine by blood right," I said. "As are the territorial treaties my family negotiated. As are the warrior alliances my bloodline has maintained for three generations. Ironvale has access to those resources through my mated bond. When that bond is severed, the access ends."

Thorne stood. "Luna, you're talking about stripping half the pack's operational infrastructure—"

"I'm talking about taking back what was always mine," I said. My voice was very calm. Very quiet. "Mathias Larson built nothing. He consumed what I provided and took credit for the results. That ends today."

Voss set the documents down carefully. "The annual Pack Banquet is in three days. Every allied Alpha in the region will be there."

"I know," I said. "That's when I'll speak the rejection. Publicly. Before witnesses."

The elders exchanged glances. I could see them calculating. The political fallout. The territorial instability. The sheer unprecedented nature of what I was describing.

"This hasn't been done in the Northeast in over a century," Voss said finally.

"Then it's overdue," I replied.

I stood. Walked to the window. The sky was lighter now. Pink and gold along the horizon.

"I've already contacted my mother," I said. "And Miriam Cross. The bloodline network is being informed as we speak. By noon, every healer, every warrior, every allied Alpha my family has ever supported will know what Mathias did. They'll know why I'm withdrawing my resources. And they'll know that Ironvale's power structure was never his to claim."

I turned back to face them. "You have a choice. You can support these proceedings and maintain your positions as elders of a pack that still values sacred law. Or you can side with an Alpha who violated the Moon Goddess's most fundamental bond. But choose quickly. Because in three days, everyone will know where you stood."

Elder Cross stood first. "I support the proceedings."

Voss nodded slowly. "As do I."

Thorne hesitated. Then sighed. "Luna, I've known you for twenty years. You've never asked for anything for yourself. If you're asking now, you've earned the right." He met my eyes. "I support the proceedings."

I felt something loosen in my chest. Not relief. Not yet. But acknowledgment.

"Thank you," I said quietly.

They left. I stayed in my study and made more calls. Locked down the healer network access codes. Suspended the warrior alliance communications. Froze the territorial treaty authorizations.

By the time the sun was fully up, half of Ironvale's operational infrastructure was dark.

My phone rang at nine. Mathias's Beta, Victor Hale. I didn't answer. He called again. Then sent a text: *Luna, the systems are locked. We can't access anything. What's happening?*

I deleted it.

At ten, I felt the mind-link snap open. Mathias's voice, sharp with panic. *Helena. What the hell did you do?*

I severed the link.

At eleven, I heard his car in the driveway. The front door slammed. His footsteps pounded up the stairs.

I stayed in my study. Waited.

The door flew open. Mathias stood there, his chest heaving, his eyes wild. He looked like he'd driven straight through the night. His clothes were wrinkled. His Alpha aura was crackling with fury and fear.

"My office," he said. "Now."

I stood slowly. Followed him down the hall to our private quarters. He slammed the door behind us.

"What did you do?" he demanded.

I looked at him. This man I'd mated twenty years ago. This Alpha I'd built an empire for. This stranger wearing my mate's face.

"I found Rose," I said quietly. "I found your other mate. Your other pups. Your other life."

His face went white.
