Chapter 4

The Challenge Circle grounds were ancient. The earth there was packed hard from centuries of combat, the perimeter marked by stones older than any living wolf could remember. By the time I arrived, three hundred wolves had already gathered.

I walked through the crowd. No one moved aside. I felt their eyes track me—some curious, some contemptuous, most simply waiting to see what would happen when a wolfless she-wolf stepped into a Circle meant for shifted combat.

Callan stood at the Alpha's observation point, arms crossed, his posture perfect. He was not looking at me. He was looking at the Circle itself, his jaw set in that particular way that meant he was already calculating outcomes. Beside him, Melody wore a dress the color of fresh cream, her hair pinned back to show the Luna's mark on her neck. She looked like she was attending a ceremony. In a way, she was.

I reached the center of the Circle. The pack elder—a gray-haired she-wolf named Maren who had served as Circle keeper for forty years—stepped forward with the blood-oath scroll. Her face was unreadable.

"Ivanna," she said, her voice carrying across the grounds without effort. "You have accepted the Challenge Circle. State your stake."

I looked at the crowd. At Soren, standing with the senior Betas. At Petra, near the back, her arms wrapped around herself. At the wolves from neighboring packs who had arrived before dawn—Garrett from Ashfen standing with two of his council members, representatives from Duskhollow and Greymere I recognized from treaty negotiations years ago.

I turned back to Maren.

"The border cabin," I said. "And all land rights attached to the property formerly held by Thomas Wren."

The crowd murmured. Not loud. Just a ripple of sound—surprise, maybe, or confusion. The border cabin was small. The land was unremarkable. It was not a stake that made sense unless you understood what it meant.

I understood. It was the last thing Thomas had given me. The last piece of ground I could call mine.

Melody stepped forward. She moved with the kind of confidence that came from never having lost anything that mattered. She stopped three feet from me and tilted her chin upward, that slow smile arriving exactly on cue.

"I accept your stake," she said. Then she turned to Maren. "And I raise mine. My bloodline trust-lands in the eastern valley. And the Luna title."

The crowd went still.

The eastern valley was not small. It was prime territory—fertile, defensible, worth more than ten border cabins. And the Luna title was not just a rank. It was authority. It was standing. It was the thing Melody had spent six weeks wielding like a weapon.

I looked at her. She looked back, her smile widening just slightly.

She thought she was being generous. She thought the absurdity of the stakes would make me reconsider.

I did not reconsider.

Callan's voice cut across the Circle before I could respond.

"I add the pack house."

Every head turned.

Callan stepped forward, his aura radiating outward in a controlled wave. He was not looking at me. He was looking at the crowd, at the visiting wolves from neighboring packs, at the three hundred witnesses who would carry this story back to their territories.

"The pack house," he repeated. "If Ivanna wins, she claims it. If she loses, it remains with Ironvale's Luna."

He was making a spectacle. He was showing the assembled packs that Ironvale's Alpha was confident enough to wager his own residence. He was turning my humiliation into theater.

What he was actually doing was handing me exactly what I needed.

Maren looked at me. "Do you accept these terms?"

I held Melody's gaze. I watched her smile hold steady, watched the certainty in her eyes that told me she had already decided how this would end.

"I accept," I said.

Maren nodded once. She unrolled the blood-oath scroll and held it between us. The terms were written in formal pack script, each line precise. Maren read them aloud—my stake, Melody's stake, Callan's addition, the irrevocable nature of the oath, the binding authority of the Circle's outcome.

When she finished, she produced a silver blade.

Melody stepped forward first. She pressed her palm to the blade, let the blood well up, and placed her hand on the scroll. The red print bloomed across the parchment.

Then it was my turn.

I took the blade. The edge was sharp, clean. I pressed it to my palm and felt the sting, the warmth. I placed my hand on the scroll beside Melody's print.

The blood-oath sealed with a sound like a breath being drawn in—a soft, final resonance that every wolf within the Circle felt in their chest.

Maren rolled the scroll and held it up. "The terms are bound. The Circle opens at dawn."

The crowd began to disperse. Melody turned and walked back toward Callan, her posture perfect, her smile still in place. Callan did not look at me. He turned and left the observation point, his Betas falling in behind him.

I stood in the center of the Circle alone.

Inside my chest, Sera moved. Not a flicker. Not a surge. A steady, certain pressure that felt like a wolf stretching after a long sleep, testing the edges of the space she had been given.

*Now,* she said. Not a question. A statement.

I pressed my bleeding palm closed and walked toward the perimeter. Garrett was standing near the eastern edge, his arms crossed, his expression unreadable. When I passed him, he spoke quietly.

"That was either the bravest thing I've ever seen," he said, "or the most foolish."

I stopped. I looked at him.

"It was necessary," I said.

He nodded slowly. Then he stepped aside and let me pass.

I walked back toward the storage shed. The sun was climbing. I had eighteen hours before the Circle opened.

I did not plan to sleep.
