Chapter 1

Ian walked into the great hall at 4:17 on a Thursday afternoon with another woman's hand curled around his sleeve, and through the mate bond in my chest I felt him decide.

The decision came before he spoke. It came as a cold, administrative thing, the way a man closes a folder he is done with. My sternum went numb under my own palm.

"This is Jasmine Diaz," he said, not looking at me. His voice filled the hall the way it always did—that low, weighted resonance the pack called leadership and I had learned to call something else. "She carries my heir. She will be your Luna."

Jasmine pressed her hand flat against the round of her belly. Five months. I did the arithmetic in my head before I could stop it.

"Rachel is wolfless." Ian's eyes finally moved. They landed on a spot two inches to the left of my face. "She was never fit for the title."

The pack I had fed for five years looked at the floor. Lena, the omega whose fever I had sat through last winter, put her hand over her mouth. Nobody spoke. Through the bond, I felt Ian's satisfaction settle like a signature at the bottom of a page.

I did not sway. I did not speak. I pressed my left hand flat against my sternum and counted the breaths until he turned away.

---

I found him in the kitchen at eleven that night. The house was asleep. I put the ultrasound printout on the marble between us.

"One month," I said. "From when you came home in June."

He glanced at the paper the way he glanced at unopened mail. "It changes nothing."

"Ian."

"Jasmine's pup is the heir. Yours is—" He shrugged. The shrug was worse than any sentence he could have finished.

A sound in the doorway. Jasmine, barefoot, robe loose over her stomach. She had heard everything. Her eyes went hot and bright.

"You brought that here?" she said to me. "You brought that to him?"

I picked up the ultrasound. I turned toward the hall.

She followed me. I heard her breath behind me on the corridor and I heard Ian's tread, unhurried, taking the servant's stair up to the landing above the main flight. He wanted to watch from height. I understood that the way you understand weather.

I reached the top of the main staircase. Stone, twenty-two steps, curved. I had counted them once during a party.

"Ian," Jasmine said, and her voice cracked in a way I had heard her practice. "She's threatening the baby—"

"Stand still, Rachel," Ian said from the landing.

His Alpha tone slid under my skin the way it always had. Small. Habitual. He probably did not even hear himself do it.

My legs locked.

Jasmine's palms hit my shoulder blades.

I did not fall the way a wolf falls. I fell the way a piece of furniture falls—no reach, no catch, my arms bolted to my sides by a command he had used so many times over five years he could deploy it without thinking. Stone met my hip. Stone met my ribs. Stone met the back of my skull and the small round place low in my belly where the ultrasound had shown a flicker the size of a lentil.

I landed at the bottom on my side. Warmth spread under me. I could smell it before I could feel it.

Ian descended. His shoes came into my sightline—polished, unhurried. He stepped over my hip without pausing. Jasmine was already sobbing on the landing.

"Sweetheart," he said to her. "Sweetheart, come here."

Through the bond I felt him hold her. I felt the exact temperature of his indifference to me. It was not hatred. Hatred would have been something.

---

Mara Voss's hands were the first warm thing in the world.

I drifted up through the clinic ceiling light and saw her bent over my abdomen with an ultrasound wand and a face I could not read. She met my eyes. She shook her head once.

I did not cry. Something inside my ribs stirred—a slow, furious pressure I had never felt before, low and living, then still. Not yet, I thought at it, not knowing who I was speaking to.

Mara pulled the sheet back over my legs. She turned to her tablet, but not before I saw her fingers pause on the silver-scarred ridge along my flank—the ambush I had never logged, the wound I had shielded Ian from and then hidden from every healer in this pack for four years. She looked at it a long time. She wrote something. She said nothing.

---

Jasmine came at dawn with two delta guards behind her.

"Your things are in the hall," she said. "The Alpha's real Luna needs her rest."

She set a small brass key on my bedside table. Basement storage. I knew the room. I had inventoried it myself, twice.

I closed my hand around the key. I pressed my other palm flat against my sternum. My wolf pushed at my ribs again—harder this time, hot—and I held her down.

Not yet.

---

I was discharged at nine. I walked home alone.

The Luna suite door had a new code. The omegas lined the upstairs hall in silence. Lena was crying. None of them moved. None of them could.

I knelt by the cardboard box someone had left outside my old door and I opened it and took out one thing: a hollowed hardcover of Middlemarch, and inside the hollow, the ledger. Three years of Ironridge's line items in my own hand. Every subsidiary. Every seized parcel. Every wire Ian thought was buried.

I carried the ledger down four flights to the basement. I sat on the cot. I opened the book on my lap.

My wolf pushed at my ribs again, low and silver and awake.

"Not yet," I said out loud, to the concrete walls and to her. "We need leverage first."

Upstairs, a door slammed. Jasmine's laugh carried down the stairwell, bright and new, and somewhere under it I heard Ian say her name.
