Chapter 4

The notification lit up my phone at nine-thirty in the evening.

I was curled on the couch with a book I wasn't really reading, half-listening to the sound of Lorenzo moving around upstairs. The buzz made me glance down.

Silverfang Pack Group Chat.

I'd forgotten I was still in it. No one had messaged me directly since I left, so the thread had gone quiet on my end. But now there were forty-three unread messages.

I opened it.

Sienna Park's name appeared every third message. She was holding court the way she always did, her commentary punctuated by laughing emojis and agreement from the usual satellites.

*Did you hear where Ella Woods ended up? Some lone wolf in Moonveil. No one in Silverfang would take her after the ceremony.*

*She's probably chasing him. You know how she was with Maverick.*

*Honestly it's kind of sad. Like she doesn't know when to stop.*

*I heard the wolf she's with doesn't even have a functioning bond. Dormant or something. So she's literally managing a broken wolf because no one else wanted the job.*

There were more. Variations on the same theme. I scrolled through them with the detached focus of someone reading a weather report.

Then I closed the app. Set the phone face-down on the couch cushion.

I stared at the ceiling.

The old habit stirred. The one that asked if they were right. If I was the problem. If leaving Silverfang was just another version of running from something I should have stayed and fixed.

I sat there for a long time, testing the thought. Turning it over.

It didn't land the way it used to.

Sienna didn't know what I was doing here. She didn't know Lorenzo. She didn't know that I'd caught a perimeter breach before trained warriors did, or that I'd rerouted a trail run because I noticed a knee compensation, or that I could make Bolognese that actually tasted like something.

She knew the version of me that fit her narrative. The one that was easy to dismiss.

I wasn't that version anymore.

I picked up my phone, left the group chat without ceremony, and went upstairs to bed.

But I didn't fall asleep quickly.

---

The scent hit me at one-fifteen in the morning.

I woke without knowing why at first. Just the sudden, sharp awareness that something was wrong. My wolf stirred—alert, focused.

I got out of bed, pulled on a sweatshirt, and moved to the window.

The property was dark. Quiet. The perimeter lights cast long shadows across the grass.

But the wrongness didn't go away.

I grabbed my phone, shoved my feet into sneakers, and went downstairs as quietly as I could.

The back door was unlocked. I slipped outside.

The air was cool and damp. I stood on the porch for a moment, letting my senses adjust. Then I caught it again.

A scent. Faint. Unfamiliar.

Not Moonveil. Not packless either—rogues had a specific unwashed edge to them. This was something else. Controlled. Deliberate.

Someone who didn't belong here but knew how to move like they did.

I followed the perimeter fence line, keeping my steps light. The scent grew stronger near the northeast corner, where the property backed up against dense forest.

I crouched near the fence.

Two track impressions in the soft ground. Recent. Boot treads, not paws. Someone in human form. The spacing suggested they'd been standing here for a while. Watching.

My pulse kicked up. Not panic. Just focus.

I pulled out my phone and texted Lorenzo.

*Northeast corner. Unfamiliar scent. Recent tracks. You should see this.*

The reply came in less than thirty seconds.

*Stay there. Don't engage.*

I stayed.

Lorenzo appeared two minutes later, moving through the dark with the kind of silence that should have been impossible for someone whose wolf was dormant. He was dressed in dark clothes, his expression unreadable.

He crouched beside me without a word and studied the tracks.

Then he stood, pulled out his phone, and made a call.

"Callum. Northeast perimeter. Now."

He hung up. Looked at me.

"Go inside," he said.

It wasn't a suggestion. It was an order. The kind of order that came with weight behind it—not Alpha tone exactly, but close. Too close for someone whose wolf was supposed to be dormant.

I met his eyes. "What's going on?"

"Inside, Ella."

I wanted to argue. I didn't.

I went back to the house and watched from the kitchen window as Callum and two other Moonveil wolves arrived. They moved through the property with practiced efficiency, checking the perimeter, scanning the tree line.

Lorenzo stood in the center of it all, directing them with quiet authority.

I watched him for a long time.

Then I made coffee, because I wasn't going back to sleep.

---

Lorenzo came inside just before dawn.

I was sitting at the kitchen island with my second cup. He looked tired but steady. He poured himself coffee without asking and sat across from me.

"It was a rogue," he said. "Moonveil. Acting on a tip about a valuable asset on the property."

I waited.

"You caught him before my perimeter rotation did," Lorenzo continued. His voice was even. "That's not nothing."

"What kind of asset?" I asked.

He took a sip of coffee. "The kind that doesn't concern you."

It was a deflection. A clean one. But it was still a deflection.

I set my mug down carefully. "You moved like someone whose wolf is fully functional."

Lorenzo didn't flinch. "Muscle memory."

"Right," I said.

We looked at each other across the counter. The kitchen was quiet except for the hum of the refrigerator.

He wasn't going to tell me. Not yet. Maybe not ever.

But the way he was looking at me—steady, relieved, something else I couldn't name—wasn't the way a patient looked at a caretaker.

It was the way someone looked at a person they were actively glad to have near them.

I received the look. Processed it. Filed it away next to all the other things I was noticing and not naming.

Then I stood, rinsed my mug, and said, "I'm making breakfast."

Lorenzo nodded. "Thank you."

I didn't answer. I just pulled eggs and bread from the fridge and started cooking.

Behind me, Lorenzo stayed at the counter. Watching.

Neither of us said anything else.

But something had shifted again. Something quiet and deliberate and entirely unspoken.

I was starting to recognize the pattern.
