After My Alpha Humiliated Me, I Awakened as Royalty

At 11:47 on a Thursday night, my sacred mate mark went entirely cold. In front of thirty silent Ashvale wolves, my Alpha, Dallas, chose a carved bone artifact over our three-year bond. Chapter 2

The Lycan King's estate was carved into the side of a mountain that had no business existing so close to the coast. Grey stone walls, black slate roofs, terraces cut into the rock at three levels. I saw it first through the passenger window of the Beta's car and did not say anything for a long time.

"Register at the receiving desk as a minor-pack claimant," the Beta said. "Territorial business. Don't offer more than they ask."

"You're not walking me in?"

"You walk in as yourself. The rest happens when it happens."

I adjusted the collar of my plain grey jacket and stepped out of the car. The suppressant patch on the inside of my left forearm itched under the fabric. He'd applied it that morning without explanation, only saying, *Until we're ready.*

The receiving terrace was already full. Alphas in tailored coats, Lunas in silver at their throats, Betas cataloging faces. I kept my head down and walked to the desk. The clerk barely looked at me.

"Name and pack."

"Vivian Bradley. Independent claimant. Eastern boundary parcel, former Ashvale territory."

His pen hovered. Then he wrote it down and slid me a badge. Minor claimant. Peripheral access. Exactly what I wanted.

I turned to walk toward the inner hall—and stopped.

A man was standing on the upper terrace, alone, apart from his own Beta by three careful paces. Dark coat. Hands loose at his sides. He was not moving. Not shifting his weight, not glancing around, not blinking at the intervals that ordinary people blink. He was looking at me.

My stomach turned over in a way I did not recognize.

I dropped my eyes to the badge in my hand, walked past the desk, and kept moving until the pillars swallowed me. Behind me I felt something like a pressure change, the specific quiet a room takes on when a dominant wolf decides not to speak.

I did not look back.

---

In the administrative hall I found what I came for.

The land survey maps were kept in flat drawers along the northern wall, indexed by regional grid. I'd learned how to read pack cartography sitting on a stool in the Ashvale records room at nineteen years old, and my hands remembered the drawers before my mind did. I pulled the northeast quadrant sheet. Unrolled it flat.

My eastern territory was outlined in faded pencil. Forty acres. Rocky. Worthless.

Across the top of the sheet, in fresh ink, someone had drawn a proposed royal expansion corridor. It ran east to west along the northern edge of the Ashvale boundary and cut through the exact eastern parcel Dallas had signed over to me three mornings ago with a smile.

I stood there with my hand flat on the map and breathed out very slowly.

My adoptive father had told me once, standing in a wheat field at dusk when I was fifteen, *If a man ever gives you land he calls worthless, take it, and never tell him what you know.* I had thought he was teaching me about pack politics. He had been teaching me about this.

I rolled the map, slid it back into its drawer, and left the hall.

---

Dallas found me on the lower terrace an hour later. He did not see me at first. He was walking a slow circle among a cluster of mid-tier Alphas, a velvet-lined box open in his hands, and Amanda was on his arm in a cream-colored dress with a silver pendant at her throat—not my mother's. A replacement. She kept touching it every few seconds, a small fluttering motion, like a bird checking a nest.

"—ancient bloodline resonance," Dallas was saying. "You feel it when you get close. My healer said she'd never encountered anything like it."

The Alpha he was addressing peered into the box and made a polite sound.

I stepped behind a stone column before Dallas's eyes swept my direction. My ribs were still tender from the rejection night; I'd bound them myself in a motel bathroom two days ago and the wrap held, but the pull of a full breath still caught. I flattened my back against the cold stone and listened.

"—Simmons Pack backing, of course," Amanda was adding, her voice sweetened into the specific warmth she used to reserve for me. "My father believes in what Dallas is building. We're expecting significant interest from the court."

Her hand went to the pendant again.

I closed my eyes for one breath.

When I opened them, I felt it—that same pressure change from the receiving terrace. I did not turn my head. I did not need to. Somewhere on the level above, the still man was watching this cluster of Alphas, and I understood with a certainty I could not source that he was watching *me* through them, cataloging exactly who was standing near me and how close.

I slipped away from the column and moved back toward the guest wing.

---

In my small assigned room I sat on the edge of the bed and pressed my thumb against the braided cord on my left wrist.

Dallas had the fake totem. Amanda had the replacement pendant. Somewhere above me on this mountain, the Lycan King I had not yet met was arranging chairs for a Summit he did not know his daughter had already walked into. And a man with unnerving stillness had looked at me across a crowded terrace as if he'd been waiting for me for longer than I had been alive.

I could not afford any of it yet. The suppressant patch was still on my arm. The maps in the administrative hall were still my only leverage.

I lay down on top of the covers, fully dressed, and stared at the ceiling until the sky outside the window went from grey to black.

Tomorrow, I would present my territorial claim to the royal court on my own terms.

Everything else would have to wait its turn.
