Chapter 4

The announcement came on a Tuesday morning, broadcast through the pack-wide link before I'd finished my first cup of coffee.

Zayne's voice, warm and certain, filling every connected wolf's head at once. The Territory Tour. Six stops, six allied packs, six weeks of Ironcrest's anthems carried across the Northeast like a victory lap. He named dates, named territories, named the Alphas who'd already signed provisional agreements. He talked about legacy. About dynasty. About the music that had made Ironcrest a household name in every pack from here to the coast.

He did not consult me first. He never had. He just announced it, the way you announce weather — something that simply is, that requires no negotiation, no permission, no acknowledgment that someone else might have a role in whether it happened at all.

I set my coffee down and listened to the whole thing.

Then I opened the mate mind-link, and I said four words.

*I'm laying down my pen.*

The silence on the other end lasted exactly three seconds. Then his laugh came through — short, dismissive, the sound he made when he thought I was being theatrical.

*Don't be dramatic. The first stop is in five weeks. You have plenty of time.*

*I'm not being dramatic,* I said. *I'm being clear.*

Another silence, longer this time. I could feel him recalibrating, the way I'd learned to read his silences over five years — the difference between the silence of a man who hadn't heard you and the silence of a man who had heard you and didn't like what it meant.

*We'll talk tonight,* he said finally. *Don't make decisions when you're tired.*

I closed the link.

—

The gift appeared on my vanity by noon. A small box this time, wrapped in the kind of paper that costs more than most wolves make in a day. I didn't open it. I moved it to the corner of the dresser and sat down at my desk and opened my notebook to a blank page and wrote nothing.

Dinner was candlelit. His doing, not mine. He'd had the terrace set with the good china, the wine I actually liked rather than the label that photographed well, and he sat across from me with his sleeves rolled up and his voice pitched low and careful, the version of himself he deployed when he wanted something he couldn't command.

"I know I've been putting too much on you," he said. "After the tour, things will slow down. I'll make more time. For us."

I looked at him across the table. The candles threw warm light across his face, softening the edges, making him look almost like the man I'd thought he was at seventeen. Almost.

I said nothing.

He kept talking. He always did, when I went quiet — filling the space with promises the way you pack cotton into a wound, hoping pressure alone will stop the bleeding. He talked about Paris. About a vacation, just the two of us. About how much he valued everything I did, even if he wasn't always good at showing it.

I ate my dinner. I said good night. I left the gift on the vanity, still wrapped.

Buster followed me to bed and pressed his warm weight against my legs, and I stared at the ceiling and listened to the pack house breathe around me and thought about a folder in Patrick's office, squared perfectly on a table, waiting.

—

Four days later, they came together.

I heard them before I saw them — Vanessa's perfume arriving ahead of her the way it always did, that thick, deliberate floral scent drifting under the studio door like an announcement. Then Zayne's knock, two sharp raps, and his voice before I'd even answered.

"Madeline. We need to talk."

They came in together, a united front framed in my doorway, Zayne's hand resting at the small of Vanessa's back in a gesture so practiced it had probably stopped meaning anything to either of them. She was dressed down, deliberately — soft colors, no jewelry, the costume of someone who wanted to look like she hadn't tried. Her perfume said otherwise.

Zayne settled into the chair across from my desk like he owned it. He did own it, technically. He owned all of it. That was rather the point.

"We just want to have a conversation," he said. Reasonable. Patient. The tone of a man who had already decided how the conversation would end.

Vanessa stayed standing. Her eyes moved around the room — the stacked scores, the notebooks, the blank pages on my desk — with the careful inventory of someone assessing a space they intended to occupy.

Then she looked at me, and her expression shifted into something soft and pained, the look of a woman being very brave about a very difficult thing.

"Madeline," she said gently. "I'm just his Beta. I would never overstep, you know that." She paused, letting the words settle. "But you're hurting an Alpha's legacy. The tour, the alliances, everything he's built — isn't that a little selfish?"

The room was quiet.

I looked at her. Then at Zayne. Then back at her.

And I felt, very clearly, the specific quality of a trap that had been walked into by the people who built it.
