Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night, in front of three hundred wolves who had come to celebrate what they thought would be my pregnancy announcement.

I felt it the moment Weston rose from his seat at the head table. The mate bond—that sacred tether the Moon Goddess herself had woven between us three years ago—suddenly pulled taut, humming with a frequency I'd never felt before. My wolf, silent for so long I'd almost forgotten she existed, let out a warning snarl deep in my chest.

Then his Alpha tone slammed through the bond like a fist closing around my throat.

"Kneel."

It wasn't a request. It was a command that bypassed my conscious mind entirely and seized my body at the root. My knees buckled. The champagne flute I'd been holding shattered against the marble floor as I went down hard, gasping, my hands splaying against cold stone to catch myself. Around me, the banquet hall went silent—three hundred wolves watching their Luna collapse to her knees before the Alpha's seat, unable to stand, unable even to lift her head.

I tried to speak. My jaw locked. I tried to reach through the bond, to ask him what was happening, but the connection was flooded with his will, drowning out everything I was.

"I have an announcement," Weston said. His voice was steady, almost pleasant. He wasn't even looking at me. "Three years ago, during a rogue ambush in the border territories, a she-wolf named Morgan Kelly saved my life. She carried me four miles through hostile ground with a broken leg and held off three rogues alone while I was unconscious. I owe her a life-debt."

My vision blurred. I blinked hard, forcing myself to focus. Morgan was standing now, rising from her seat at the side table in a dress the color of Luna white—a dress I had never seen before tonight. Her face was carefully neutral, but when her eyes flicked toward me, just for a second, I caught the edge of her smile.

"That debt," Weston continued, "outweighs any bond assigned by fate. Morgan Kelly will stand beside me as Nightstone's chosen Luna."

The hall erupted. Not in protest—in applause. Polite, measured, the kind of applause that said everyone had seen this coming except me.

I was still on my knees. My hands were shaking so hard I couldn't make them stop. The bond between us—the sacred, unbreakable bond the Moon Goddess had given me as a gift—felt like a chain now, holding me down, forcing submission I had never agreed to give.

Morgan stepped forward. Someone handed her a silver circlet—the Luna's crown I had worn for three years. She placed it on her own head with a gracious smile and turned to the crowd. "Thank you all for your support during this transition," she said warmly. "I know change is difficult. But I promise to serve Nightstone with the same devotion Savannah has shown."

She said my name like it was already past tense.

The Alpha tone released. I sucked in a breath and shoved myself to my feet, legs unsteady, the broken champagne glass crunching under my shoes. My hand went instinctively to my abdomen—still flat, still secret, the pup I'd planned to announce tonight now a truth only I carried.

Weston still wasn't looking at me. He was shaking hands with the Beta, accepting congratulations, his face calm and satisfied. I tried to reach through the bond one more time, desperate, searching for any trace of the man I'd loved.

The connection opened. I felt it click into place.

"Weston," I whispered through the link. "Please. Just talk to me."

Silence. Not the silence of distance, but the silence of a room where someone is standing right there and choosing not to answer. I could feel him on the other end, aware of me, hearing me.

He closed the link without a word.

Something inside me went very still.

I turned and walked toward the hall's side exit, my steps careful and measured, my hands no longer shaking. Behind me, the applause continued. Someone laughed. Morgan's voice rose above the crowd, warm and gracious, thanking someone by name—a name I had taught her two weeks ago when she'd asked me how to remember the pack's Omegas.

I reached the door and stopped, one hand on the frame. My wolf, silent for twenty-four years, let out a single soundless snarl that reverberated through my entire body. It wasn't grief. It wasn't even rage yet.

It was the sound of something waking up.

I pressed my other hand to my abdomen, feeling the fragile life there, and made a promise in the dark: I would protect this child. I would endure whatever came. And I would find a way through.

But as I stepped into the cold hallway and heard the door swing shut behind me, sealing me out of my own banquet, I knew one thing with absolute clarity.

The bond the Moon Goddess gave me was supposed to be a gift.

Weston Hawkins had just turned it into a weapon.

And I was going to have to cut it out of myself to survive.
