Chapter 5

Elara didn't look at me when she opened the cellar door.

She just stepped aside, one hand on the silver handle, her face carefully empty. The kind of empty that comes from practice. From executing commands you don't question because questioning isn't part of the job.

"Inside," she said quietly.

I walked in.

The silver-lined cellar was small. Maybe eight feet by ten. Three walls were bare stone. The fourth—the one with the door—was reinforced with silver plating, the metal dull and cold under the single overhead bulb. There was no furniture. No window. Just stone and silver and the smell of old fear, the kind that soaks into walls over years.

I'd been here fourteen times before. I knew exactly how long it took for the burn to start.

The door closed behind me. The lock turned with a soft, final click.

I pressed my back against the stone section of the wall—the part that wasn't silver—and breathed.

The mate mark on my neck pulsed. Not warm. Cold. Sharp. Through the bond, I could feel Greyson's emotional state shifting—the cold rage of judgment bleeding into something else. Something warmer. Directed away from me.

Toward Milena.

I closed my eyes. Counted my breaths. One. Two. Three.

The silver burn started at five minutes.

It began where my shoulder touched the door—a faint sting, like touching something too hot. Then it spread. Down my arm. Across my back where I'd leaned without thinking. The skin reddened. The sting sharpened into something deeper, something that worked its way into the bloodstream and made my wolf go quiet.

Not silent. Not gone. Just pressed down, flattened under the silver's dampening effect.

I shifted away from the door. Found the small section of bare stone near the corner and sat down, knees pulled to my chest, arms wrapped around them.

Inside me, beneath the bond's cold pressure, beneath the silver's chemical suppression, the counter-current heat was still there.

Small. Hard. Pushing.

It couldn't break through. Not yet. But it pushed.

I sat in the corner and waited.

---

An hour in, something changed.

Not in the cellar. Not in my body. In the pack link.

My mother's heartbeat—the thread I'd been monitoring unconsciously for seven years, the steady presence I felt through the connection like background noise—began to stutter.

I sat up straight. Pressed my hand to my chest like I could reach through the link and steady it myself.

The heartbeat skipped. Slowed. Skipped again.

I knew what this meant.

The antidote schedule. The last vial. The days I'd counted in my journal, locked in the box in my new room. The vial that should have been administered this morning. The vial Greyson had refused to authorize.

I was on my feet before I could think. Crossed the small space in two steps and slammed my palms against the silver door.

"Elara!" My voice cracked. I didn't care. "Elara, open the door!"

No response.

I hit the door again. The silver burned my palms instantly—sharp, searing, the skin blistering on contact. I didn't stop.

"Someone get the healer! My mother—she needs the antidote—please!"

Nothing.

Through the bond, I felt Greyson's location. Still with Milena. Still warm. Still entirely redirected, his attention fixed somewhere else, somewhere that wasn't me, wasn't my mother, wasn't the medical room on the third floor where a woman was dying because he had diverted the last vial to save a pregnancy that might not even exist.

I screamed for the healer. Hammered the door with my burned hands, the pain white-hot and immediate and irrelevant.

No one came.

The pack link carried my mother's heartbeat like a drum slowly losing its rhythm. I felt it stutter again. Felt the thread go thin.

I understood, with a clarity that was almost surgical, that the antidote was gone. That I was locked in a silver cellar. That the healer had been commanded elsewhere. That my mother was dying alone in a room no one was watching.

And that Greyson knew.

He had to know. He was the one who controlled the healer's schedule. He was the one who had refused the authorization. He was the one who had locked me here while my mother's days ran out.

I stopped hitting the door.

My hands were blistered and raw, the skin peeling where the silver had burned deepest. I pressed them against my chest and felt the pack link hum with two hundred other heartbeats, all of them steady, all of them alive.

And then I felt the absence.

Not a sound. Not a vision. Just a thread going cold and slack, a presence that had been there for seven years suddenly gone, a space in the pack connection that used to hold a heartbeat and now held nothing.

My mother died in the medical room alone.

The last antidote vial sat on Milena's bedside table.

I made a sound I will not remember making. Thin. Animal. Something that had nothing to do with performance or control or the careful mask I'd learned to wear.

Then I was silent.

I sat on the floor of the silver cellar, burns on my hands and arms, the mate mark on my neck pulsing cold, and I held the silence.

My wolf, inside me, did not whimper.

For the first time, it went entirely still.

Not suppressed. Not silenced. Not flattened under the bond's pressure or the silver's dampening effect.

Gathering.

I felt it in my chest—a weight, a density, something pulling inward instead of pushing out. Like a fist closing. Like a storm pulling air into its center before it breaks.

I sat in the corner of the cellar and breathed.

The pack link hummed around me. Two hundred wolves going about their evening. Eating. Talking. Living.

I sat in the silence where my mother's heartbeat used to be.

And inside me, beneath the bond, beneath the silver, beneath everything Greyson had used to keep me small—

Something woke up.
