Chapter 3

The rain turned to freezing sleet as Rusty and I reached the northern ridge.

Silvercrest territory began where the asphalt ended and the black pines took over. The border checkpoint wasn’t a wooden gate; it was a reinforced steel bunker manned by Lycan enforcers in tactical gear.

The moment we stepped into the floodlights, rifles clicked into place. Rusty gave a low, protective rumble, his hackles rising. I rested my hand on his head, keeping my chin level.

A tall man with a scarred cheek stepped out from the bunker door. Gideon Thorne. Gamma of the Silvercrest Dynasty. His sharp, dark eyes scanned me from my mud-caked boots to the tight bandages binding my bruised ribs under my coat.

"Step back, stray," one of the guards barked.

"Lower your weapons," Gideon said calmly. His eyes didn't leave my face. There was no surprise in his expression—only a quiet, assessing recognition. He had seen my face before. Later, I would learn that Alaric had kept a dossier on me in his private office for ten years, but right now, I didn't care why he looked at me like that.

"I am Estella Vargas," I said. My voice was raspy, but it didn't shake. "I am not here to beg for asylum. I am not here for charity. I am here to negotiate a mating alliance with Prince Alaric Voss."

A guard laughed, but Gideon silenced him with a single sideways glance.

"A mating alliance," Gideon repeated, measuring my words. "Shadowmere’s fierce little hound wants the Lycan Prince."

"Shadowmere is dead to me," I answered, meeting his stare. "And I have the keys to Declan Perry's throat in my coat. Tell Alaric I am waiting."

Gideon stared at me for three long seconds. Then he turned and went back inside the bunker.

I stood in the freezing rain for fifty minutes. Rusty leaned his warm flank against my calf, keeping the chill from settling into my bones. My lower back throbbed with a dull, hollow ache, reminding me of the blood I had spilled on the hearth. I ignored it. I locked the pain away behind an iron door in my skull.

At forty-eight minutes, the heavy steel door swung open.

Gideon walked out, tucking a secure radio into his vest. He looked at me with something new in his eyes. Respect.

"He said to bring you straight to his study," Gideon said. "Send her in."

The Silvercrest stronghold was an ancient stone citadel carved into the granite spine of the mountain. It didn't smell like Shadowmere’s damp rot and pine needles. It smelled like ancient stone, ozone, and old iron.

The moment I crossed the heavy oak threshold into the private wing, the air changed.

A scent hit me like a physical blow to the chest.

It was dark cedar, rich earth, and clean, crackling heat. Behind my ribs, my newly awakened wolf didn't just stir—she rose on all four massive paws. Her silver fur bristled with intense, electrical heat. She turned inside my spirit like a compass needle finding true north.

Then, from the floor above, a sound ripped through the citadel.

It was a Lycan’s roar. Deep, earth-shaking, and primal. The roar rattled the antique glass in the corridor sconces. The stone floor vibrated beneath my boots. It was the sound of a beast losing its mind in raw, violent recognition.

Gideon stopped dead on the stairs, his breath catching in his throat. He looked back at me, his eyes wide.

I didn't wait for him. I walked past him, following the scent up the spiral staircase.

At the end of the hall, the double doors of the private study stood half open. I pushed them back and stepped inside.

Alaric Voss stood behind a massive mahogany desk.

His knuckles were white where he gripped the edge of the wood, his chest heaving as if he had just run ten miles uphill. His dark hair was slightly mussed, and his eyes—usually an impenetrable obsidian—were bleeding into a terrifying, molten gold. His Lycan was right at the surface, fighting for control.

He looked at me. Really looked at me.

He saw the pale skin, the dark circles under my eyes, and the shadow of the violence I had survived an hour ago. And I saw him. Tall, broad-shouldered, carrying a lethal Lycan authority that made Declan look like a boy playing with a plastic crown.

The air between us snapped like struck flint.

The mate bond ignited.

It wasn't like the heavy, suffocating chain Declan had wrapped around my neck. This was a clean, roaring fire. It flooded my veins with warmth, chasing out the cold numbness that had gripped me since Judith wiped the blood from my thighs.

Neither of us spoke the word. We didn't have to.

I broke the silence before the emotion could swallow the room.

I reached inside my heavy canvas coat, pulled out the thick stack of files and ledgers, and dropped them flat onto his mahogany desk. The heavy thump echoed off the bookshelves.

"Declan Perry has spent seven years telling the Lycan Council he built Shadowmere," I said. My voice was smooth, cold, and clear. "These are the original treaties. These are the supply chain bottlenecks Abram controls. And these are the Council petitions I personally underwrote with my bloodline."

Alaric didn't look at the papers. His golden eyes stayed locked on my face. "Estella—"

"I don't want your sympathy," I cut him off, leaning forward just enough to match his intensity. "I am proposing an equal alliance. You provide the political weight, the military backing, and the court standing to dismantle him. I provide the intelligence that will bring his borders to their knees. A mating alliance. A contract between equals."

Alaric looked down at the documents. Slowly, his fingers unclenched from the desk. He reached out and picked up the top ledger—the one marked with Declan’s forged signatures. He skimmed the first three pages, then set it aside.

"I would have opened the gates for you if you arrived with nothing, Estella," he murmured, his deep voice carrying a quiet, gravelly weight.

"I know," I said. "That’s why I brought an army's worth of leverage. I don't survive on pity."

A slow, dangerous smile touched the corner of his lips. The molten gold in his eyes softened, replaced by an unyielding, fierce pride.

"Done," Alaric said. "Your terms. No changes."

A soft whine came from the doorway.

Rusty trotted into the room, his claws clicking on the polished stone floor. The large shepherd walked past me, crossed the room without a shred of hesitation, and shoved his blunt head directly against Alaric's knee.

Declan had kicked Rusty out of the room for seven years, calling him a useless stray.

Alaric didn't stiffen. Without a second thought, the future Lycan King dropped down on one knee onto the cold stone. He didn't care about his pressed trousers or his royal dignity. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a strip of dried venison, and fed the dog directly from his bare palm, scratching gently behind the dog's scarred ears.

"Good boy," Alaric murmured softly.

I stood there by the desk, watching them.

And deep in my chest, right where the cold, dead hollow of my loss had settled, something broke open. It didn't heal the scar, but for the first time in seven years, I felt the sharp, stinging return of hope.
