After My Alpha Chose His Pregnant Mistress
Chapter 1
At 4:12 on a Thursday afternoon, my mate bond went ice cold against my ribs.
I stood outside the heavy oak door of the Shadowmere war room, my palm pressed flat against the wood. Through the invisible thread that had tied my soul to Declan Perry for seven years, I felt his heartbeat. It wasn't racing with guilt or fear. It was slow, thick, and satisfied.
Declan was laughing.
"I buried the timeline clause in the Ironcrest treaty, Garrett," Declan’s voice drifted through the seam of the door, smooth and dismissive. "They signed it without checking."
Beta Garrett Vance hesitated. "Alpha, that clause sets the mandatory date for your Mate Ceremony with Estella. If the Lycan Council audits the treaty—"
"The Council won't audit a damn thing," Declan cut him off. "Estella surrendered her family inheritance to sponsor my Alpha claim. They trust her name, not mine. As long as that date isn't locked in ink, my hands are clean. It keeps my options open for Cadence."
Cadence. The wolfless Omega he called his first love. The girl I had personally pulled out of a rogue ditch and fed at my own table three years ago.
The seven years I spent taking silver blades for him turned to ash in my throat. I didn't cry. I didn't scream.
I turned the brass knob and pushed the door open.
It struck the stone wall with a hollow crack. Garrett jumped back from the desk, his eyes darting to the floor. Declan only frowned, his jaw tightening in irritation.
"Estella," Declan barked, dropping his voice into a heavy, suffocating Alpha tone. "Knock before you enter my office."
The command crashed over my shoulders like lead, demanding that I lower my head. My knees shuddered for a fraction of a second, but I forced my chin up and stared straight into his gray eyes, snapping his command like dry wood.
"Seven years, Declan," I said. My voice was level, almost quiet. "I took silver shrapnel in my spine for you. I gave up my birthright so the Council would hand you that Alpha ring. And you stalled our ceremony for an Omega who hides behind you the second the wind blows?"
Declan stood up, his fists slamming onto the mahogany desk. "You will not speak about Cadence like—"
A high, theatrical shriek cut through the corridor behind me.
We both turned. Cadence stood at the top of the grand staircase, clutching the banister. Her wide, doe-like eyes met mine. For a split second, her trembling lip curled into a sharp, victorious smirk.
Then she threw herself backward down the stairs.
The sickening thuds of her body hitting the wood echoed into the hall. She landed on the flagstones below, curling into a tight ball and clutching her stomach.
"My baby!" Cadence wailed, her voice echoing to the rafters. "Declan, help me! Estella pushed me! She said she’d murder my unborn pup!"
Declan didn't look at the distance between me and the stairs. He didn't ask a single question.
His hand clamped around my throat.
Before I could draw breath, he hoisted me off my feet and slammed me backward into the great hall with the full, unbridled force of his Alpha frame.
The edge of the stone hearth caught me directly across my lower back.
A sharp crack echoed in my ears. Agony tore through my pelvis, blinding and white-hot. My breath vanished, and I slid down the stone face onto the floor. Between my thighs, a sudden gush of warm, dark blood soaked through my denim.
Declan didn't look down at me. He was already bounding down the steps, scooping Cadence into his arms and roaring for the guards.
I didn't call his name. I didn't beg him to turn around.
I dug my fingernails into the floor, dragged myself up, and crawled down the east corridor toward the clinic.
Healer Judith Hall dropped a tray of surgical instruments when I shoved the clinic door open. "Estella! Goddess above—"
"My stomach," I choked out, hauling myself onto the low metal cot.
Judith ripped my jeans open. Her hands glowed with faint golden healing light as she pressed against my abdomen. Then the light died. Her face went completely white.
"Estella..." Judith whispered, her hands trembling. "You were six weeks along. The heartbeat is gone. The blunt trauma tore your uterine wall. You're miscarrying."
A cold, bottomless silence swallowed the room. Declan’s pup. The child I hadn't even had time to confirm, conceived on the night he swore he was preparing our vows. Dead on a hearth because of a lie.
The agony in my womb peaked, and then the mate bond in my chest did not break—it caught fire.
My bones snapped.
Judith screamed, stumbling back against the glass cabinets.
It wasn't a normal shift. My spine elongated with a violent, rhythmic crunch. Muscles expanded, thick and heavy, tearing through my clothes as silver fur, dense and threaded with iridescent Lycan scales, surged over my skin.
I rose on four massive paws, shattering the ceramic floor tiles beneath my weight. My head brushed the clinic ceiling. I was twice the size of Declan's wolf. The air in the room grew so heavy with ancient royal power that Judith dropped to her knees, choking on the pressure.
Inside my mind, a voice spoke for the very first time in my life. It was ancient, velvet, and lethal.
*Leave.*
The power pulled back, sinking beneath my human skin like water into sand. The bleeding stopped, sealed by the raw vitality of the shift.
I stood up, entirely numb. I walked over to the clinic's wall safe—the one Declan used to store pack records—and took the iron-sealed folder containing the original territorial grant of Shadowmere, signed in my own ancestral blood.
Heavy bootsteps pounded in the hallway outside. Declan’s voice roared, demanding Judith bring sedatives for Cadence's sprained ankle.
I tucked the grant inside my jacket, kicked open the clinic’s fire exit into the pouring rain, and walked into the dark.
