Chapter 5

The safehouse went quiet after midnight.

Silas had gone upstairs. The analyst had left hours ago, her clinical voice still echoing in my head—*The wolf was there. It was being held down.* I sat at the dining table with the wolfsbane report open in front of me, the pages fanned out in the pool of yellow lamplight, and I did not move.

My anger had gone somewhere past heat. It had cooled into something with edges. Something structural, like a building I could walk through room by room. I could feel every wall of it. I could feel where the load-bearing beams were. I understood, for the first time in five years, exactly what shape my life had been forced into.

And then, in the deep silence—

Something moved.

Not a thought. Not a feeling. A *presence*. Low and vast and slow, like something enormous shifting position in a room I couldn't see. It pulsed once, warm against the inside of my ribs, and then it was gone before I could take a full breath.

I pressed my hand flat to my sternum. Held it there. Waited.

Nothing. Just my own pulse, thudding fast.

But I had felt it. I had felt *something*.

Out in the hallway, footsteps stopped.

I listened. Nixon had been pacing for the last hour—a soft, patient rhythm just at the edge of hearing. Now the rhythm had cut off mid-step. I could picture him without seeing him: head tilted, weight shifted onto the back foot, that particular stillness of a predator who had just registered a sound.

He stood in the hall for a long time.

He did not come to the door.

I closed the wolfsbane file and did not tell him what I'd felt.

---

Silas brought the financial summary at breakfast.

He set it beside my coffee like it was nothing, and I read it with the sun still low in the windows and the smell of cedar and amber threaded through the whole room because Nixon was standing behind my chair, close enough that I could hear him breathing.

The Silvercrest shell account had moved a lot of money. Six figures over four years. Every dollar of it originating in Ironveil pack funds and terminating in the purchase of fabricated warrior credentials—training certifications, combat rankings, kill-count affidavits. All of it laundered through human accounting firms. All of it stamped and notarized and filed under Alessandra Wheeler's name.

Every warrior credential Barrett had cited to justify the alliance. Every reputation point that had made her Luna-worthy on paper. Purchased. With his own pack's money.

I kept reading.

Then I stopped.

Two transfer dates. I knew them. My hand went to the pen without looking, and I underlined them—one, two—clean and steady.

"These two," I said. "March eleventh, year three. September second, year four. I flagged both of these as anomalous transfers. I sent them up to the Beta with a full report. He told me they were reconciled and to drop it."

Nixon leaned over my shoulder. His scent tightened around me.

"He knew the money was moving," I said. My voice was flat. "He chose not to look."

Nixon didn't say anything for a moment. Then, quietly: "Add it to the petition."

I added it to the petition.

---

The message came through a mutual contact that afternoon—someone from the human town, someone who had no idea what she was passing along. Barrett wanted to meet. A diner. Neutral ground. Alone.

I went.

Nixon didn't try to stop me. He drove me to the edge of the parking lot, killed the engine, and said, "I'll be here." That was all. He didn't ask what I was going to say. He didn't tell me to be careful. He just settled into the driver's seat with a book he wasn't going to read, and let me walk in alone.

Barrett was in the corner booth.

He looked smaller than I remembered. Civilian clothes—a gray jacket, no pack insignia, no Beta at his elbow. Without the weight of Ironveil around him, he was just a man. A tired one. He didn't stand when I approached. He just gestured at the seat across from him, and I slid in without a word.

He pushed a folded document across the table.

I opened it slowly. Read it slowly. A blood-oath silence pact—old language, magical binding, the kind of document that would seal a wolf's throat shut on a specific subject for the rest of her life. If I ever awakened a wolf. If I ever tried to testify. In exchange: rogue brand expunged, subordinate rank restored, quiet reintegration.

I read every line.

When I looked up, Barrett was watching me with something in his face I hadn't seen in five years. Something close to hope. Something close to the way he used to look at me across a strategy table when I'd just solved a problem no one else could.

I took the document in both hands.

I tore it down the middle.

I tore it again.

I let the pieces fall onto his plate, onto the eggs he hadn't touched, and I leaned forward across the table so he would hear me clearly.

"The next time you hear my voice, Barrett—"

I stood.

"—it will be before the Council."

I walked out. I did not look back.

Behind me, in the booth, Barrett sat very still, staring down at the torn paper on his plate.
