Chapter 2

Two packs turned me away before noon.

The first was Greywood. I'd personally negotiated their eastern border treaty with Ironveil three years ago, sat across a table from their Beta for six hours until we had language everyone could live with. When I showed up at their checkpoint—barefoot, silver-branded, still in the shredded sleeping shift—the gate wolf took one look at my wrist and stepped back like I was contagious.

"I can't," he said. He wouldn't meet my eyes.

"I'm not asking to join," I said. "I'm asking for a shirt and a pair of shoes."

He closed the gate.

The second pack was Ashfen. I'd helped them with a rogue incursion two winters back, spent eleven days in their territory tracking a pack of six. Their Alpha had shaken my hand and said he owed me one. When his Beta saw the rogue mark, she said, "The Alpha isn't available," and didn't move from the doorway.

I didn't beg. I turned around and walked back into the trees.

Somewhere around midday I found a gas station on the edge of neutral territory—human-run, no wolves, no auras, just a bored teenager behind a counter who didn't look twice at my wrist. I paid for a prepaid burner with the emergency cash I kept folded inside my phone case. I bought a bottle of water and a pack of crackers and ate them sitting on the curb behind the dumpster, because that was the kind of day it was.

I thought for a long time before I typed the message.

Nixon Bradley wasn't pack. He wasn't politics. He was the boy I'd grown up alongside in a human town before Ironveil found me, back when I was just a girl who didn't understand why she could smell emotions and run faster than everyone else on the track team. He'd mentioned, once, years ago, something about higher legal channels in the wolf world. Contacts. Standing. I hadn't asked him to explain.

I typed fast. No preamble. Nixon. I need Council petition forms and someone with standing to co-file. I'm rogue. Long story. Can you help?

I hit send and sat back against the oak I'd found at the tree line, watching the shadows move. The brand on my wrist had stopped bleeding but it hadn't stopped hurting. It never stopped hurting. I pressed it against my knee and breathed through my nose and waited.

He arrived four hours later.

I heard him before I saw him—footsteps too quiet for the dead leaves, the kind of controlled movement that meant someone who knew exactly how loud they were choosing not to be. Then the tree line opened and he stepped through, and the scent hit me like a wall.

Cedar smoke. Dark amber. Warm and deep and so overwhelming that my body locked up completely, every nerve ending suddenly awake in a way that had nothing to do with pain. My pulse went from steady to hammering in the space of one breath. Heat crawled up the back of my neck. I pressed my burned wrist harder against my knee and tried to breathe normally.

I failed.

Nixon stopped. He was taller than I remembered. Broader. He wore a dark coat, no pack colors, nothing to mark him as anything. His eyes found me immediately—scanning, cataloguing, taking in the shredded shift, the bare feet, the silver scar on my wrist—and something moved across his face that he shut down fast. His jaw tightened. His right hand found the trunk of a pine tree and gripped it, knuckles going white.

He stood there for a second, very still. Then he crossed the clearing and crouched down in front of me.

He didn't say anything about how I looked. He didn't say he was sorry, or that it would be okay, or any of the things that would have made me cry and I did not want to cry. He reached into his coat and pulled out a leather folio, dark brown, stamped with a seal I didn't recognize. He set it on the ground between us and opened it.

Inside were forms. Official ones. Dense with legal language and the kind of formatting that meant institutional weight behind every line.

Lycan Council Tribunal Petition. Inter-Pack Grievance. Filed Under Ancient Rights.

"You lead," he said. His voice was quiet. Steady. "I'll make sure they have to listen."

I stared at the forms. Then I looked up at him.

"How do you have Council forms?"

He met my eyes. Something in his gaze was careful. Measured. Like a man who had been waiting a long time to say a specific thing and was choosing the moment.

"Because I'm the Lycan Prince."

The words landed in the silence between us. The birds kept going. The wind moved through the trees. The brand on my wrist throbbed its steady, patient rhythm.

I looked at the folio. I looked at him. His scent curled around me again—cedar and amber—and my pulse did that same terrible, traitorous thing.

I picked up the pen he'd set beside the forms.

"Then start talking," I said. "We have a lot of work to do."
