Chapter 4

I don't know how long I stayed on my hands and knees on the mat.

Leonidas didn't move away. He kept his hands on my shoulders—not gripping, not restraining, just there. Steady weight. Something real to push against while my bones finished their argument with themselves.

The cracking had stopped. The shift had reversed. My body was human again, technically, though it felt like something that had been taken apart and reassembled by someone working from a bad diagram. My ribs ached. My jaw ached. Even my fingers ached, curled against the mat.

I was drenched in sweat. My hair was plastered to my face. I couldn't have looked less like a Lycan royal bloodline anything.

Leonidas said nothing. He just waited.

That was the part I kept noticing. He didn't fill the silence. He didn't offer reassurances I hadn't asked for. He sat with the aftermath of what had just happened the way you sit with a fire—present, attentive, not trying to put it out before it was ready.

I don't know exactly when it happened. Somewhere in the last of the pain, when the shift had fully reversed and my vision was clearing from white back to the training room's grey walls and the overhead lights—my eyes opened.

I felt it before I understood it. A flare of something behind my vision. Ancient. Enormous. Like looking through a window into a room that had always been there, just locked.

Leonidas went very still.

I looked at him. His expression didn't change, not exactly, but something in his eyes did—a quality of attention that sharpened into something else entirely. Something that looked almost like recognition.

Three seconds. Maybe four. Then it faded.

I pressed my forehead back to the mat and breathed.

"She's back," I said. My voice came out raw.

"I know," he said quietly.

He handed me a water bottle when I finally pushed myself upright. I drank half of it without stopping. He sat three feet away and pulled out his phone, and I watched him adjust something on the training schedule without comment—shifting tomorrow's session, extending the recovery window, moving the shift-attempt exercises back two days.

No discussion. No asking whether I agreed. He just adjusted it and put the phone away.

I should have said something. Thank you, or I'm fine, or something that acknowledged what had just happened. I didn't. I finished the water and looked at the far wall and let the silence sit.

Inside me, Selene had gone quiet again. Not dormant—I could feel the difference now, the distinction between the hollow nothing of the past two weeks and this. This was a sleeping thing. A breathing thing. Something with weight and heat that hadn't been there before.

She was there. She was just done talking for tonight.

---

She made up for it in the days that followed.

*Seven years.* Her voice came in the early mornings, when I was still half-asleep and my defenses were down. *Seven years you let him tell you I was a problem to be managed.*

I didn't argue. There was no version of the argument I could win.

*You knew what I was. You knew what we were. And you chose his comfort.*

"I chose the bond," I said aloud, alone in the guest quarters at five in the morning.

*The bond he threw in the dirt on your anniversary,* she said. *In front of everyone. While she wore your collar.*

That landed the way she intended it to. I sat with it.

The thing I'd never examined directly—the belief I'd carried so long it had become invisible—was this: that my wolf was too much. That the right kind of love required me to be smaller. That Archer's discomfort with Selene was something I owed it to the bond to accommodate, because love meant sacrifice, and sacrifice meant erasure, and I'd been so certain that was true that I'd never once asked why.

Selene wasn't interested in my rationalizations. She'd been conscious through all of it. She'd felt every ceremony I'd attended without shifting, every pack run I'd been forbidden from joining, every time I'd pressed her back down into silence because the alternative was conflict and I was so tired of conflict.

She had opinions about that. Many of them. Delivered without mercy.

The healing between us was not linear. It was a reckoning, conducted in the pre-dawn dark, and it left me wrung out in ways that training couldn't touch.

But she was there. She was awake. And every morning I got up and went to the facility, and every morning she was a little less furious and a little more present, and I started to understand that this—this difficult, ungentle thing—was what coming back actually looked like.

---

The Western Alliance Pack Summit was held at a conference facility outside Phoenix. Neutral territory, by convention. Leonidas attended as the senior sovereign presence. I accompanied his delegation with no formal rank, no title, technically under Nightveil's protection and nothing else.

I wore the black leather sparring gloves in my jacket pocket. Old habit. They'd been in my bag since I'd left Silvercrest, and I hadn't taken them out once, and I didn't examine why I'd brought them to Phoenix.

The open reception was crowded. Dozens of packs. Alphas and their Lunas moving through the room in the careful, territorial choreography of people who didn't fully trust each other but had agreed to be in the same space anyway.

I was standing near the back when I felt it.

Not a sound. Not a word. Just the specific sensation of being assessed—the cold, precise weight of someone calculating what you represent.

I turned.

Archer was across the room. He was wearing a dark suit, Silvercrest's colors at his lapel, and Solana was at his side in a silver dress that caught the light. She was laughing at something the Alpha beside her had said. She looked comfortable. Practiced. She wore the Luna role the way she'd been rehearsing for it for years.

Archer wasn't laughing. He was looking at me.

Not with guilt. Not with surprise. His expression was the careful, neutral recalibration of a man who had expected a variable to stay removed and was now adjusting his calculations because it hadn't.

I held his gaze for three seconds. Then I looked away first—not because I had to, but because I chose to. Because there was nothing in that exchange I needed to win yet.

Inside my jacket pocket, my fingers found the edge of the sparring gloves.

Selene stirred. Low and deliberate, like something waking up and deciding it was ready.

*Not yet,* I told her.

*No,* she agreed. *But soon.*
