Chapter 2

The war room smelled like cedar and old ink when I arrived at dawn. I'd slept three hours in the quarters Silas assigned me—a small room with a narrow bed and a window facing east—and woke before the sun cleared the ridge. My wolf was restless. She'd been quiet my whole life, and now she paced inside my ribs like she was learning the dimensions of a cage she hadn't known existed.

Declan was already at the table when I entered. Maps spread across the surface. Reports stacked in neat columns. He looked up, met my eyes briefly, and gestured to the chair across from him.

"You'll be working directly with border intelligence," he said. No preamble. No performance of generosity. "Full access to patrol reports, movement data, anything flagged by perimeter teams. Your analysis goes to the senior council and to me."

I set my journal on the table. "Not as a consultant."

"As an analyst." He slid a Silvercrest insignia across the wood—a small silver pin with the pack crest etched clean. "You'll present your first briefing this morning."

I picked up the pin. It was heavier than it looked. The dead scar on my neck pulsed once, cold and hollow, reminding me what the last insignia had cost. I pinned it to my cloak anyway.

The senior war council assembled an hour later. Five wolves, all ranked, all watching me with the careful neutrality of people deciding whether I was an asset or a liability. I spread my maps on the table and began.

Ten minutes in, one of them—a broad-shouldered Delta with gray streaking his temples—interrupted. "You're the rejected Luna from Ironridge."

It wasn't a question. It was a classification.

I looked at him. Said nothing.

Declan's voice cut through the room, quiet and absolute. "Her name is Colette. She's a strategic analyst. Address her as one."

The Delta's mouth tightened. He didn't argue. No one else spoke. The room adjusted around the correction like water around a stone, and I continued the briefing without acknowledging what had just happened. But I noticed. I filed it away with everything else I was learning about the Lycan Prince who'd formalized a pact with a packless wolf carrying a dead mark and no leverage.

When the session ended, Declan stayed behind as the others filed out. He studied the maps I'd pinned to the wall—routes and patterns I'd spent two years building while Ironridge slept—and said, "This is more than intelligence. This is architecture."

"It's what I do."

He looked at me then, steady and unreadable. "I know."

I left before the silence could become something else.

Miles away, Ironridge was beginning to fracture.

I didn't know it yet. I was working through Ashveil's eastern perimeter data when the first report reached me—secondhand, passed along by a Silvercrest scout who'd heard it from a rogue trading network. Three senior Ironridge warriors had collapsed during morning drills. Fatigue. Nausea. Weakened shift.

I set down my pen. Pressed two fingers to the dead scar on my neck without thinking, then dropped my hand when I realized what I was doing.

It had been two days since I dismantled the last neutralization station. The wolfsbane contamination in Ironridge's primary water source was slow-acting, cumulative, designed to weaken rather than kill. I'd been filtering it for two years. Sourcing the antidote compounds myself. Running the protocol alone because no one had asked where the sickness went, and I'd stopped expecting them to notice.

Now they'd notice.

I returned to my work. If the Ironridge Healer was competent, she'd identify the wolfsbane within a week. If Chance was smart, he'd trace it back to the water supply and realize what I'd been doing. If the Beta had a shred of honesty, he'd tell Chance the timing wasn't coincidence.

I didn't hold my breath waiting for any of it.

That night, the war room was mine and Declan's alone. The rest of the council had gone. The perimeter teams were running night rotations. We worked in silence for the first hour—him reviewing patrol schedules, me cross-referencing Ashveil movement patterns against terrain vulnerability.

Somewhere past midnight, I found the gap I'd been looking for. A predictable rotation in the Ashveil Alpha's eastern scout deployment—every third week, same route, same timing. Sloppy. Arrogant.

"He thinks no one's watching," I said, more to myself than to Declan.

Declan looked up. "He's wrong."

I met his eyes. Something about the exhaustion, or the late hour, or the fact that he'd spent six hours working beside me without once asking about the mark on my neck—something loosened. "He's been wrong for two years. It's starting to feel personal."

The corner of Declan's mouth shifted. Not quite a smile. Close.

I looked back at my maps, suddenly aware of how small the room was. How long we'd been here. The scent of wildflower and white cedar—my scent, though I'd never noticed it before—seemed sharper in the closed space. My wolf stirred, restless and newly awake, responding to something I didn't have a name for yet.

When I glanced up, Declan was still watching me. Not studying the maps. Not pretending to look elsewhere. Just… watching, with an intensity that felt like a question he wasn't asking.

I held the look longer than I meant to. Longer than strategy required. Then I turned back to my work, pulse unsteady, and tried to ignore the fact that he didn't look away immediately either.

He stayed in the room another hour. We didn't speak again. But when I finally left, exhausted and too wired to sleep, I felt his gaze follow me to the door.

I didn't know yet that his wolf had named me the moment I crossed Silvercrest's border.

I didn't know yet that the scent pulling between us wasn't just chemistry.

But I was starting to suspect that the Moon Goddess wasn't finished with me.
