Chapter 3

I was alone in the penthouse living room when she arrived.

I'd been sitting at the kitchen island with my laptop open, working through another layer of Derek's financial records. The Clearwater Holdings folder had led me to three offshore accounts and a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands. I was close to something. I could feel it.

Then the elevator chimed.

I closed the laptop and turned just as Lexi stepped into the foyer.

She didn't knock. Didn't announce herself. Just walked in like she owned the place, her heels clicking against the marble with sharp, deliberate strikes. She wore a cream-colored suit that probably cost more than my entire wardrobe, and her blonde hair was pulled back so tight it looked painful.

Her eyes locked on me, and I watched her expression shift from surprise to fury in the space of a heartbeat.

"So it's true," she said. Her voice was cold. Controlled. The kind of control that came from years of pack training and social conditioning. "Derek actually moved you in."

I stood slowly and folded my hands in front of me. "Can I help you with something?"

She laughed. It was a brittle, cutting sound. "Help me? You?" She moved closer, circling the island like a predator assessing prey. "Let me tell you what you can help me with, Dahlia Franklin. You can help me understand what kind of wolfless nobody thinks she has the right to sleep under the same roof as a mated Alpha."

I didn't move. Didn't react. Just watched her with the same calm expression I'd practiced in the mirror for three years.

My silence seemed to enrage her more.

"You're pathetic," she continued, her voice rising. "A disgrace. A Franklin with no pack, no wolf, no future. You're clinging to scraps because you're too broken to do anything else." She stopped directly across from me, her hands braced on the counter. "You think you're a threat? You're not. You're a mistress. A convenient body Derek keeps around because he feels guilty about whatever happened to your sad little family."

I tilted my head slightly. Let her see the emptiness in my eyes. Let her see that nothing she said could touch me because I'd already survived worse.

"Are you finished?" I asked quietly.

Her nostrils flared. "No. I'm not finished." She straightened and crossed her arms. "I'm going to have you removed from Black Moon territory. You don't belong here. You never did. And when Derek realizes what a mistake he's made, you'll be back in whatever gutter he found you in."

I smiled. Not the soft, practiced smile I used on Derek. Something colder. Sharper.

"Good luck with that," I said.

She opened her mouth to respond, but the elevator chimed again.

Derek stepped out, and the temperature in the room dropped ten degrees.

He took in the scene immediately. Lexi standing rigid with fury. Me calm and unmoved on the other side of the island. The tension thick enough to choke on.

"What are you doing here?" His voice was low. Dangerous.

Lexi spun to face him, and I watched her expression shift. The fury smoothed into something softer. More calculated. "Derek. I came to talk to you. About her." She gestured at me without looking. "About this situation that's making you look weak in front of the entire pack."

"Get out."

The words were quiet. Absolute. Laced with Alpha command.

Lexi froze. "What?"

"I said get out." Derek moved forward, and his presence filled the space like a physical force. His eyes had gone dark. Feral. "You don't get to come into my home and speak to her like that."

"Your home?" Lexi's voice cracked. "I'm your chosen mate, Derek. Your Luna. And you're protecting a Franklin nobody over me?"

"You're not my Luna." The words were cold. Final. "You never were."

I watched Lexi's face drain of color. Watched her hands curl into fists. Watched her realize that she'd just lost a battle she hadn't known she was fighting.

Derek crossed to her in three strides and gripped her upper arm. Not gently. "We're leaving. Now."

He didn't wait for her to respond. Just guided her toward the elevator with a hand that allowed no resistance. I caught a glimpse of her expression as they passed. Not devastated. Not broken.

Calculating.

The elevator doors closed, and I was alone again.

I stood in the silent penthouse and counted to sixty. Then I walked to the window and looked out at the city lights below.

My wolf stirred in the back of my mind. Uneasy. Restless.

I pushed her down and went back to my laptop.

---

By morning, the entire pack knew.

I heard it first from Sylvia. She texted me at seven a.m. with a string of wide-eyed emojis and a single message: *Girl. What did you DO?*

I didn't respond. I got dressed, made coffee I couldn't taste, and waited.

Derek came to the suite an hour later. He looked like he hadn't slept. His shirt was wrinkled, his jaw tight, and there were shadows under his eyes that hadn't been there yesterday.

"We need to talk," he said.

I set down my coffee. "Okay."

He ran a hand through his hair and paced to the window. "Lexi's family is calling for a formal pack meeting. They're saying I humiliated her. Disrespected the mate bond. Made the pack look unstable."

"Did you?"

He turned to look at me. "Did I what?"

"Make the pack look unstable."

His jaw worked. "I protected you."

"I didn't ask you to."

"You didn't have to." He crossed back to me and caught my face in his hands. His touch was gentle. Desperate. "You're mine, Dahlia. I'm not going to stand by and let anyone treat you like you're nothing."

I looked up at him and saw the fractures forming. Saw the cracks in the Alpha facade. Saw the obsession that was going to tear him apart.

I reached up and covered his hands with mine. "What are you going to do?"

"I don't know," he said quietly. "But I'm not losing you again."

I nodded and let him pull me against his chest. Let him hold me like I was something precious. Something worth breaking for.

And I thought about Nathaniel's three phone calls. About the senior pack members reassessing their positions. About the empire I was watching crumble from the inside.

One thread had just become a rope.

And I was going to use it to hang them all.
