Chapter 5

The equipment shed smelled like rust and old rope, the same smell it had held for seven years, and I was grateful for it now—something ordinary to stand inside while I did something that wasn't.

Callum came first, slipping through the door sideways so it wouldn't creak. Petra and Jin followed two minutes later, moving low along the fence line the way I'd taught them when they were fourteen and terrified of their own shadows. None of them said anything until the door was shut and the single bulb overhead had been switched off in favor of a flashlight cupped low in Petra's palm.

I knelt and pried up the loose floorboard I'd carried with me in my mind for three years, even after I'd stopped sleeping in that room. The packet underneath was wrapped in oilcloth, small enough to fit in two hands, heavy with everything it held.

"This is what gets you out if I don't," I said, and unwrapped it slow, so they could see. "Recordings. Scent-witness testimony from the Omega who slept in Royce's bed for three years — her voice, on record, saying whose scent that room actually carried. Security timestamps from the pack house system, proving where I was every one of those nights." I held up the small glass vials last, six of them, catching the flashlight in dull amber light. "My suppressant. Chemically distinct. Verifiable against anything they try to pass off as mine."

Jin exhaled through his teeth. Petra didn't move at all, her eyes fixed on the vials like they might combust.

"If I don't make contact within four hours of the banquet starting," I said, "you take this east. All of it. You find the royal Gamma — Damon Cole — and you put it directly in his hands. No one else's. Not a Beta, not a guard, not anyone who tells you they'll pass it along."

"And if we can't get past the border patrols?" Callum's voice was low, steady in a way that told me he'd already been running the routes in his head.

"You will," I said. "You know that land better than the wolves who patrol it. I made sure of that a long time ago."

Callum reached out and gripped my unburned hand, hard enough that I felt his pulse hammering through it. "I swear on my wolf," he said. "I swear it."

Petra and Jin repeated it a half-second behind him, their voices overlapping, young and fierce and absolutely certain, and something in my chest that had been clenched for weeks finally loosened a fraction.

I smiled. Not the practiced, careful smile I gave the hall, the one that gave nothing away. A real one, the first I'd let myself have in longer than I wanted to count.

"Petra," I said. "March fourth. Jin, September nineteenth. Callum—" I looked at him, at the boy I'd bandaged and fed and hidden for seven years without ever telling him why. "January twelfth. You'll be twenty-two."

All three of them stared at me like I'd spoken a language they didn't know I understood.

"You remember our birthdays," Jin said, faint.

"I remember everything about you," I said. "All five of you. I always have."

No one said anything for a moment. The bulb ticked as it cooled somewhere above us, and outside the wind moved through the tree line, carrying the ordinary sounds of a pack that had no idea what was folded into oilcloth on the floor of its own equipment shed.

---

A thousand miles east, in a study with the windows thrown open to the cold, Christian Hunter stood with his hand pressed to the scar at his temple and told his Beta he could smell wildflowers.

"There's nothing out there, Your Majesty," his Beta said carefully. "No gardens for miles this side of the estate."

"I know that." Christian didn't turn from the window. His wolf was clawing at the inside of his ribs, restless in a way it hadn't been in months, and he couldn't explain it, couldn't place it, only knew it was close and getting closer. "I can still smell it."

Elena Marsh stood in the doorway, and when he finally looked at her, something in her face made him go still.

"I need to show you a file," she said. "One I've been keeping for three years."

He sat. He read.

He read the phantom memories, dated and catalogued. He read the mind-link exchanges with an agent identified only as *the bonded she-wolf*. He read the words *Shock-Therapy Bond Protocol* and understood, with mounting horror, exactly what they meant. He read that his fated mate had spent seven years enduring deliberate, engineered humiliation to keep a dormant bond twitching toward consciousness. He read about a silver-burned hand.

For four minutes, he didn't speak.

Then he stood, and his aura went off like a detonation — a single wordless pulse that spider-webbed the window glass and drove his Beta and Gamma to their knees without a sound.

"Where is she," he said, very quietly. "Right now. Where is she."

"Silver Antler lodge," Elena said. "Tomorrow night." She hesitated, then told him the rest — what the file's final page said about a fallen allied bloodline, about a name that wasn't only *mate*.

Christian closed his eyes. When he opened them, his voice was flat and absolute.

"Get Damon," he said. "We leave at dusk."
