Chapter 2

The study door was open when I got there, which felt like an omen I didn't want. Royce liked doors closed when he wanted to be obeyed and open when he wanted witnesses. This morning he wanted witnesses — his Beta hovering near the bookshelf, pretending to read a ledger he wasn't reading.

I walked in anyway.

"It's over," I said. No greeting. No bow of the head. "I won't be at the next ceremony. I won't stand beside you again."

Royce looked up slowly, the kind of slow that used to make lesser wolves flinch. His ribs were still bandaged under his shirt, and even now, two days later, the wrongness of his scent crawled into the room ahead of him, souring the air I used to breathe in like medicine.

"Excuse me?" He said it almost pleasantly, like I'd mispronounced a word.

"You heard me."

His Beta's pen stopped scratching. Royce rose from behind his desk, unhurried, and the unhurried part was worse than if he'd shouted. "Seven years, Nora. You crawl to me at every ceremony like it's the only air you breathe, and now you stroll in here to tell me it's *over*?" He said the word like it tasted bad. "No explanation?"

"No explanation."

Something flickered across his face — not hurt, I realized. Insult. As if I'd damaged property he hadn't known he wanted until it tried to walk away.

"Sit down," he said.

I didn't move.

His voice dropped, layered, thickened with that low command frequency that had bent my knees at every ceremony for seven years. "*Stay.*"

It hit me like a hand closing around my spine. My knees buckled — actually buckled, the floor tilting up to meet me — and for one humiliating second I thought I would go down in front of his Beta and let him watch me kneel one final time.

Then my wolf came up through me like a flood breaking a dam.

She had spent seven years muzzled, quiet, obedient to the mission, letting Royce's voice pass through us both because the scent mattered more than the pride. But the scent was gone now. There was no mission left to protect. And she rose with a fury that scared even me, a snarl climbing my throat before I could stop it, and I forced my spine straight through sheer will, joints screaming, until I was standing again.

Royce's eyes widened. Just slightly. Just enough.

I turned around and walked out of his study on my own legs, and I did not look back once — not at his face, not at his Beta, not at the seven years of practiced deference I was leaving in ash behind me.

It was the first time in seven years I had ever told him no and made it stick.

---

He didn't come after me with anything as honest as anger. Royce didn't chase what he could dismantle instead.

By that afternoon, my old quarters were locked, my key card dead at the door. My name had vanished from the communal seating chart. The library system logged me as *access revoked* when I tried to check a scent-record file I'd used a hundred times before. Training permissions, gone. It was efficient. Bureaucratic. Cold in a way that told me exactly how little I had ever mattered to him beyond the shape I made kneeling in a hall.

Khloe found me an hour later, in the small guest room they'd shoved me into like an afterthought. She came with two of her friends trailing behind her, arranged like an audience she'd invited on purpose.

"Nora." Her voice was syrup poured over glass. "The Alpha's had your assignment updated." She tilted her head, savoring it. "Omega dormitory. Basement level, third door on the left." A pause, delicate as a blade. "Do try not to get lost."

Behind her, the hallway had gone quiet in that particular way packs go quiet when they know something shameful is happening and have decided watching is safer than speaking. No one met my eyes. No one needed to. I'd been the pity story for seven years — now I was simply confirming it.

I picked up my bag.

My burned hand throbbed where the silver scar hadn't fully healed, and I pressed it flat against my sternum, an old habit, holding myself together through my palm the way I always did. I walked past Khloe without a word, past her friends' badly hidden smiles, down the narrow stairwell that smelled like mildew and old stone, toward the basement.

But my wolf wasn't whimpering the way she used to when the pack looked at us like something to be pitied.

She was quiet in a different way now — sharp, still, counting. Counting the doors, the exits, the distance from the basement to the tree line behind the pack house, the hours until the coded frequency in my satchel would matter more than anything Royce could strip from me with a signature on a chart.

Somewhere beneath a loose floorboard in a room that used to be mine, three years of evidence sat waiting, untouched, unclaimed.

Royce thought he'd taken everything from me today.

He didn't even know what he hadn't found.
