Chapter 3

The neutral-territory gathering was held at Clearwater Ridge, a stretch of open land where four pack territories met. Bonfires dotted the field. Wolves from different packs mingled under the truce flag—talking, laughing, pretending the politics didn't exist for one night.

Zoey and I arrived just after sunset. The air smelled like woodsmoke and pine. I kept my hands in my jacket pockets and my eyes on the ground. I wasn't here to socialize. Zoey had insisted I needed to get out of the training yard before I became part of the equipment.

We found a spot near the edge of the largest fire circle. Zoey grabbed two drinks from a passing server. I took mine but didn't drink it.

That's when I saw them.

Corbin and Solana stood across the fire. She was leaning into him, her head tucked against his shoulder. The firelight caught the fresh mate mark on her neck—dark, complete, nothing like the hollow half-mark he'd left on mine.

Solana's eyes were wide and unfocused. That look. The one she wore like a second skin. Helpless. Fragile. The kind of she-wolf who needed protecting.

I felt nothing.

No jealousy. No grief. Just a cold, clarifying fury that wasn't aimed at him. It was aimed at me. At the three years I'd spent believing I could earn something that was never being offered in good faith.

I looked away. Took a breath. The hollow in my chest where the bond used to be was still there, but it didn't ache anymore. It was just empty space.

Zoey followed my gaze. Her jaw tightened. "We can leave."

"No," I said. "I'm fine."

I wasn't fine. But I wasn't broken either.

Ten minutes later, Corbin noticed me.

He said something to Solana. She nodded, her expression shifting into something that looked like concern. He crossed the fire circle toward me. Slow. Uncertain.

I didn't move.

He stopped a few feet away. His scent—cedar and rain—hit me and registered as nothing. The bond was dead. My wolf didn't even stir.

"Lauren," he said quietly. "I wanted to explain—"

The air pressure changed.

Every wolf within twenty feet went still. The scent rolled in like a storm front—wild jasmine and thunderstorm, but deeper, heavier, edged with something that made my spine straighten and my pulse jump.

I turned.

Jameson stepped out of the tree line behind me. He was half-shifted—eyes full gold, his aura radiating outward in a wave that flattened the wolves nearest to him. His gaze locked on Corbin.

Corbin's wolf reacted before he could stop it. His shoulders dropped. His head lowered. Instinct. Submission. He caught himself halfway through the motion, but it was too late. Everyone saw.

Jameson didn't acknowledge him. He moved to my side, his hand settling on the small of my back. Warm. Deliberate. Possessive.

"We're leaving," he said quietly.

I should have argued. I didn't. I let him guide me away from the fire, away from Corbin, away from the three hundred wolves who were now staring.

The silence followed us across the field.

Zoey caught up halfway to the parking area. She didn't say anything. Just walked beside me. Jameson's hand stayed on my back until we reached his car.

He opened the door. I got in. Zoey slid into the back seat.

We drove in silence.

---

I found Jameson before training the next morning.

He was in the yard, reviewing something on a tablet. I walked up and stopped directly in front of him.

"Last night," I said. "That intervention. I didn't ask for it."

He looked up. His expression was calm. Controlled. "I know."

"I'm not a she-wolf who needs an escort."

"I know that too."

I waited. He set the tablet down.

"I didn't do it because you needed protecting," he said quietly. "I did it because his scent was making my wolf irrational. Escorting you away was the most controlled option I had."

The honesty hit me harder than I expected. I absorbed it. Nodded once.

"Understood," I said.

I turned toward the sparring mat. He followed.

The session that followed was the most intense we'd had. Every hold tighter. Every escape harder. Neither of us fully resolved. By the end, I was breathing hard and my ribs were bruised.

Marcus called the afternoon bouts. I faced a ranked Gamma named Silas. He was fast. Strong. But I'd been watching him for two weeks.

I won.

The yard went quiet. Silas looked at me. Surprised. Then he grinned and offered his hand.

I took it.

Marcus nodded from the sideline. No smile. Just acknowledgment.

I walked off the mat. My legs were shaking. My wolf—still dormant, still silent—stirred faintly inside me. Not awake. Just aware.

I pulled out my notebook that night and wrote it down. One line. No fanfare.

*First ranked win. Gamma Silas. February 22.*

I closed the notebook and stared at the words.

Sable didn't speak. But I felt her. Faint. Distant. Listening.

---

In Silverfang, things were falling apart.

I heard about it through Zoey, who heard it from a Silverfang Delta who'd crossed into Blackveil territory for a supply run. The patrol schedules I'd built—tight, efficient, no gaps—had been replaced with something Solana called "more compassionate." Fewer night shifts. Longer breaks. It sounded good on paper.

Until a border alert went unanswered for forty minutes because no one was assigned to that sector.

The alliance logistics I'd maintained for three years—shipment schedules, trade terms, diplomatic check-ins—were being handled by Solana now. She'd missed two shipments. A third arrived two weeks late.

The Silverfang elders noticed. They brought it to Corbin. He promised to look into it.

Then Solana had a tearful breakdown about feeling overwhelmed, and Corbin spent the rest of the day comforting her instead of fixing the problem.

The structures I'd built were eroding. One mistake at a time.

I should have felt vindicated. I didn't. I just felt tired.

Zoey asked me once if I missed it. The work. The pack.

I thought about it.

"No," I said finally. "I miss believing it mattered."

She didn't ask again.
