After My Alpha Branded Me a Rogue
Chapter 1
The bond broke at 8:47 on the night Jaden was supposed to make me his Luna.
I was standing at the crowd's edge, in the pale gray dress I'd altered three times, when he reached the dais and did not turn to look for me. His hand went instead to Scarlet Langford's waist. Her red silk slid under his palm like it had been rehearsed. It had been rehearsed. I understood that a full second before my mind caught up.
I saw the mark on her neck first — fresh, still red at the edges, sitting high on the right side where his teeth had been not long ago. Hours. Maybe less.
My hand went to my own neck. The old habit. Two fingers pressed to the scar he'd given me three years ago.
"I, Jaden Voss, Alpha of Ironveil," he said, and his voice carried across every wolf packed onto the ceremony grounds, "reject you, Liv Ashford, as my mate and Luna."
The mark under my fingers went cold.
Not slowly. All at once. Like a door slamming shut on an empty room. Then the cold turned to fire — a white, searing pull that started at my throat and tore straight down through my sternum, my stomach, my knees. My legs folded. I hit the packed earth on my palms first, then my hip. Something metallic filled my mouth. I'd bitten my tongue.
Hundreds of wolves. Not one moved.
I heard breathing. Someone shifted their weight on gravel. Nobody came.
On the dais, Scarlet tilted her head to expose her fresh mark better, and smiled at me. Small. Almost polite. Like we'd been playing a game and she'd won a round we both knew the rules of.
And then — from somewhere I had never in twenty-one years heard sound come from — a snarl ripped through my chest.
It was not mine. It was mine.
It vibrated up from behind my ribs, guttural and furious, so deep it rattled my teeth. My hands spasmed against the dirt. Something inside me had woken up just far enough to feel what had been done, and it was not weeping. It was raging. It clawed at the inside of my sternum like it wanted out through the bone.
I pressed my palm flat to the ground.
Get up.
The snarl inside me pulsed again, hot and ancient and not-quite-mine-yet. I used it. I planted one foot. Then the other. My knee shook so hard I thought it would buckle, and I locked it and kept locking it until it held.
I stood.
I did not look at Jaden. I did not look at Scarlet. I looked at the wolves who had watched me fall and not moved, and I walked past them one row at a time, and the snarl inside my chest kept me upright the whole way to the tree line.
No one followed.
---
The healing wing was dark when I got there. I didn't turn on the overhead light. I didn't need to.
I went straight to the locked case behind the compound cabinet. My hands were shaking so badly I dropped the key twice before I got it in. When I opened the case, I already knew what I was going to find, because the snarl in my chest had already told me.
Empty.
Every notebook. Every original formula sheet. My shorthand ciphers. Three years of work.
On Jaden's desk, in the office adjoining the wing, I found the filing. Council seal. Ironveil letterhead. His signature at the bottom in the confident down-stroke I used to think meant something.
*Wolfsbane Antidote Protocols — Developed under Alpha Jaden Voss, Ironveil Pack.*
And two pages in, my own name.
*Liv Ashford, packless rogue, unauthorized use of pack resources, fraudulent claim of healer status —*
I read it twice.
The bond. The work. The name. In the same night.
The snarl inside my chest went quiet. Not gone. Colder. It settled into something patient and precise, and I recognized the feeling because it was the same feeling I used when I was measuring a lethal compound down to the milligram.
I walked back into the wing.
I lined up the iron mixing bowls in a row along the central workbench — six of them, the ones I used for base compounds. I pulled every remaining notebook from the secondary shelves, every backup vial, every stored sample from the cold cabinet. I worked the way I always worked. Methodically. No wasted motion.
The first notebook caught fast. Cipher pages I'd written by candlelight when my eyes hurt too much for the overheads. The paper curled black at the edges and went.
I moved to the next bowl. And the next.
The smoke was already thick when I heard the doors slam open.
"LIV—"
Jaden's voice. Then Scarlet's, higher, sharper: "What is she — oh my God, the samples—"
I didn't turn around yet. I dropped the last vial into the last bowl and watched the compound flare green, then white, then gone.
Jaden lunged.
I stepped back from the workbench, out of his reach, and finally looked at him through the smoke.
He stopped.
I don't know what he saw on my face. I know what I felt. The snarl in my chest, patient now, watching him through my eyes.
I raised my hand. I pressed two fingers — once, deliberately — to the cold scar on my neck where his mark used to be.
Then I dropped my hand.
I walked past him, past Scarlet frozen in the doorway with her hand flying to her own fresh mark, and I walked out of the healing wing and out of the pack house and off Ironveil land with nothing but the gray dress on my back.
Behind me, through the open doors, I heard Jaden start to scream into the flames.
