Chapter 1

The morning light filtered through the heavy curtains of the Alpha's private suite as I balanced the small wooden box in my hands. Inside lay a traditional pre-ceremony gift—a hand-carved wolf figurine meant to symbolize our union. My fingers traced the intricate details one last time before I knocked on the door.

"Enter," came Austin's deep voice from within.

I pushed open the door, my heart racing with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. This was supposed to be our moment—the calm before the storm of the Mate Ceremony that would bind us together forever.

But the sight that greeted me froze my blood.

Jolene Gonzalez stood behind Austin, her fingers deftly adjusting his tie. Her body pressed against his back in a gesture too intimate for mere pack members. The Alpha's suite—his private sanctuary—had been violated by her presence.

"Perfect," she murmured, her lips brushing against his ear. "You look powerful enough to make any Luna kneel."

Austin chuckled, a sound I'd once found charming but now sent ice through my veins. "Not this Luna. She's too proper for that."

I stepped backward into the hallway, my wolf stirring restlessly within me. Something about their casual intimacy made my stomach twist. I should have announced myself, but instead, I found myself hiding in the shadows of the corridor.

On the table beside them lay a ceremonial dagger—the kind used in bonding rituals. But this one was different. Carved into the hilt were two sets of initials, intertwined in an elaborate design: "J+A."

My vision blurred as I realized what I was witnessing. This wasn't a momentary lapse or a mistake. This was calculated. Deliberate.

"How long do you think you'll keep her around?" Jolene asked, her voice dropping to a whisper that somehow carried to my sensitive ears.

Austin shrugged, adjusting his cuffs. "Until I don't need the alliance her family provides anymore."

"And then?"

"Then I'll find someone who understands what it means to truly submit to an Alpha."

Their laughter echoed in my ears as I backed away, my mind racing to process what I'd heard. Years. They'd been doing this for years.

---

The pack gathered at the Moon Stone altar as the sun reached its zenith. Hundreds of eyes watched as I walked toward Austin, my ceremonial white dress flowing behind me. The visiting Alphas from allied packs formed a semicircle around us, their expressions solemn and expectant.

Austin stood tall and proud, every inch the powerful Alpha. His eyes met mine with practiced affection that now rang hollow.

"It is time," the Elder announced, his voice carrying across the clearing. "Alpha Austin Snyder and Daisy Allen will now complete their mate bond under the blessing of the Moon Goddess."

Austin stepped forward, his hands reaching for my shoulders. The traditional marking would leave his teeth marks on my neck—a physical symbol of our spiritual connection.

But as he leaned in, something inside me snapped.

I stepped back, my voice steady despite the chaos raging within me.

"I, Daisy Allen, reject you, Austin Snyder, Alpha of the Silver Claw Pack."

The words hung in the air like smoke. Gasps erupted from the crowd as Austin's face contorted in pain. The formal rejection—the ultimate insult to an Alpha—sent visible shockwaves through the assembly.

"You cannot reject me," Austin growled, his Alpha tone vibrating through the clearing. "I am your fated mate!"

"The Moon Goddess may have chosen you," I replied, my voice carrying the icy composure of my high-ranking bloodline. "But you chose someone else."

I gestured toward the Alpha's suite where Jolene now stood, watching with horror as her secret was exposed.

"The scent of your lover still clings to you," I continued, meeting his gaze without flinching. "Did you think I wouldn't notice?"

The crowd fell silent as Austin's face paled. The visiting Alphas exchanged glances, their expressions darkening with disapproval.

Without another word, I turned and walked away from the altar, away from the pack I'd been born to lead.

---

The night embraced me as I drove toward the border of Lycan Territory, my few belongings packed hastily in the backseat. Fear and determination warred within me as I navigated the winding mountain roads.

Rejected mates had few options—submission as an Omega or exile as a rogue. Neither would I choose.

Instead, I would invoke an ancient law—sanctuary for high-ranking wolves seeking justice from the Lycan King himself.

The guards intercepted me at the territory line, their massive forms blocking my path.

"State your business," the lead guard demanded, his eyes glowing in the darkness.

"I seek sanctuary under the Old Law," I replied, keeping my chin high despite my racing heart. "I am Daisy Allen, daughter of the Eastern Alliance's High Councilor."

To my surprise, they didn't detain me. Instead, a messenger was dispatched, returning with orders that shocked even me.

"The King grants you immediate audience," the guard announced, stepping aside.

The Lycan Palace loomed before me—ancient stone towers that had witnessed centuries of werewolf history. My footsteps echoed in the marble hallway as I was led to the throne room.

And there he sat—Damian Payne, the Lycan King. His eyes flashed gold as I entered, his powerful aura filling the chamber with suffocating intensity.

For a moment, he struggled to contain it, his hands tightening on the arms of his throne.

Then, to my astonishment, he rose and descended the steps toward me. His voice, when he finally spoke, held a softness that belied his fearsome reputation.

"So," he murmured, stopping just before me, "you've finally come."
