Chapter 5

They came for me at midnight.

Five Ashborne warriors. Broad-shouldered. Silent. The lead one unlocked the cell door and stepped inside without a word.

I was still on the floor. I had not moved since they threw me in hours ago. My ribs ached where Sterling's command had held me silent during the tribunal. My throat was raw from trying to speak through the Alpha tone that had sealed it shut.

The warrior looked down at me. His face was blank.

"Alpha Hayes wants you to understand what you did," he said.

I opened my mouth. Nothing came out. The command still held.

He nodded to the others.

They hauled me up by the arms. My legs barely held. One of them shoved me back against the stone wall. The impact knocked the air out of my lungs.

The lead warrior pulled on a pair of gloves. Silver mesh woven through the knuckles. It gleamed dully in the torchlight.

"This is for the Gamma's daughter," he said.

The first blow caught me across the jaw. My head snapped sideways. Blood filled my mouth.

I did not make a sound. I had learned that in Ironveil. Sound invited more.

The second blow cracked a rib. I felt it break. The pain was sharp and clean and familiar.

The third drove into my stomach. I doubled over. They let me fall.

I hit the stone floor hard. My cheek pressed against the cold. I tasted copper and salt.

They did not stop.

Fists wrapped in silver mesh. Methodical. Thorough. Cracking bone. Splitting skin. Burning where the silver touched.

I curled on my side and I took it. I pressed my thumbnail into the inside of my wrist until I felt bone and I breathed through my nose in short, shallow bursts.

Inside my chest, underneath the wolfsbane ceiling, something stirred.

Not whimpering. Not weak.

A low, building pressure. Like a dam about to break.

The warriors stepped back. The lead one crouched beside me. He tilted his head.

"You still breathing?"

I did not answer. I could not.

He stood. "Good. Tribunal's in three days. You'll live that long."

They walked out. The cell door clanged shut. The lock turned.

Silence.

I lay on the stone floor in the dark. My body was a catalogue of fractures. My consciousness flickered. I could not tell if my eyes were open or closed.

The suppressant was wearing off.

I felt it first as a warmth spreading through my chest. Then as a vibration. Then as something enormous and ancient rising inside me like a flood breaking through cracked earth.

Sable came.

Not the fragile silver wolf everyone expected. Not the weak, half-formed thing they had pitied.

Something massive. Blazing. Lycan-blooded light erupting from within as twenty years of wolfsbane suppression met a body pushed beyond all biological tolerance.

The chains binding my wrists snapped like thread.

Broken bones realigned with audible cracks. Fractures sealed. Blood stopped flowing. The silver burns cooled and vanished.

I felt my body reshape. Fur. Claws. Four legs.

I stood.

The white wolf filled the cell. Luminous in the dark. Massive. Her shoulders reached the height of a grown man. Her eyes blazed gold.

My eyes.

Sable's voice filled my head—not words, but a resonance that made the stone walls vibrate.

*I have always been here.*

I looked down at my paws. White fur. Lycan-blooded light pooling on the floor like moonlight.

A private joke formed between us. About what everyone expected. About what they got.

*Sable,* I thought.

Her approval was a low hum that settled into my bones.

*Yes.*

I could break out. The bars would bend. The door would shatter. I could run.

But I did not.

I shifted back. Human form. Naked on the cold stone. Healed just enough to pass as battered but alive.

I reached for my boot. The one they had not bothered to search. I pulled the hidden vial from the lining. Marlee's last suppressant dose.

I swallowed it dry.

Sable went quiet underneath. But this time the stillness felt different. Not hidden.

Ready.

I pulled the folded paper from the other boot. The healer's report. Still intact.

I pressed it against my chest and I lay back down on the stone floor and I waited for morning.

When the Ashborne warriors opened the cell at dawn, I was conscious. Bruised. Bleeding from the mouth.

Alive.

The lead warrior looked surprised.

"Tougher than you look," he muttered.

They walked me to the border. No chains. No words.

When I crossed back into Ironveil territory, the pack house gates were visible through the trees.

A notice was posted on the gate. Fresh ink. Large letters.

*Mate Ceremony. Alpha Sterling Voss and Nyla. Three days.*

I stopped walking.

The Ashborne warriors were already gone. I stood alone at the tree line with the healer's report folded in my boot and the rejection clause filed in a treaty Sterling had signed without reading.

Sable's hum deepened inside me.

*Three days,* she said.

I looked at the notice. At Sterling's name beside Nyla's.

At the ceremony that would gather every witness I needed.

I pressed my hand to my ribs where the graft scar sat. The mark on my neck was cold and dead.

Three days.

I turned and walked toward the pack house.

Inside my chest, Sable waited—massive, patient, blazing with light no suppressant could fully contain.

And I thought: *Let him gather the witnesses.*

*Then we speak.*
