After My Alpha Banished Me, His Pack Collapsed Novel Cover

After My Alpha Banished Me, His Pack Collapsed

At exactly 10:14 on a Tuesday morning, the sacred bond shattered without my knowledge. I was serving roasted venison in the Ironmaw banquet hall, suffocated by the scent of Celine's jasmine as she occupied the Luna's chair. For three banquets, I endured serving under Alpha Weston's false promise that my demotion was temporary. But as he raised his hand at the head table, my patience finally broke.

Chapter 3

I heard about the first breach three days after I crossed the border.

The settlement where I'd stopped was small — maybe twenty wolves, mostly older Deltas and a handful of Omegas who'd drifted here after their packs dissolved or cast them out. They had a communal fire pit, a few rough cabins, and a healer's shed that hadn't seen a real healer in years. The woman who ran it, a graying she-wolf named Tessa, had let me work in exchange for a corner to sleep in and whatever food they could spare.

Lila was better. The fever had broken completely, and she'd started reaching for things again — my hair, Buster's ears, the dried herbs hanging from Tessa's rafters. I kept her close anyway. I didn't trust the world yet.

The news came with a rogue trader who passed through selling pelts and gossip. He stood by the fire pit that evening, warming his hands, and told the gathered wolves about the chaos at Ironmaw.

"Rogues tore through the northern border two nights ago," he said. "Mauled three patrols. The outer homesteads are emptying out — families packing up and running before the next wave hits."

Someone asked if the Alpha had called for reinforcements.

The trader laughed, short and bitter. "The Alpha's scrambling. Doubled the border shifts, but it's like trying to hold water in a sieve. Something's broken in that territory. The rogues can smell it."

I sat in the shadows near Tessa's shed, Lila asleep against my chest, and listened. My hands were very still.

The trader kept talking. "Word is, Weston Cole's blaming his warriors. Says they've gone soft. But I've seen Ironmaw's borders before — they were solid as stone. Now they're wide open, and nobody knows why."

Buster's head rested on my knee. I ran my fingers through his fur and said nothing.

I knew why.

The ward I had woven with my own blood, renewed every new moon in the woods where no one saw, sustained for years while Weston paraded Celine through banquets and called my daughter's fever Omega-level whining — that ward was gone. I had severed it the moment I crossed the boundary line. Ironmaw's borders weren't collapsing because the warriors had gone soft. They were collapsing because the invisible thing holding them had walked away.

I felt no satisfaction. Just a cold, distant sense of completion, like watching a door you'd been holding open finally swing shut.

The trader moved on. The fire burned low. I carried Lila back to the shed and laid her down on the pallet Tessa had given us. She curled into a ball, one small fist tucked under her chin.

I sat beside her and touched the mark scar on my neck. It didn't throb anymore. It was just numb — a patch of skin that felt like it belonged to someone else.

My wolf hadn't stirred since the rejection. She was still there, somewhere deep, but collapsed inward, silent as stone.

I pulled my hand away and looked at Lila.

She was safe. That was all that mattered.

---

Over the next few days, I traded herbalist work for food and shelter. Tessa watched me mix poultices and tinctures with the ease of someone who'd done it a hundred times, and one evening she asked where I'd learned.

"I needed to," I said simply.

She didn't press.

The settlement had a rhythm I recognized — the same rhythm every pack had, just quieter, looser. Wolves came and went. Some stayed for a season, some for a night. Most were displaced: rejected mates, exiled Omegas, lone wolves who'd lost their packs to war or sickness or bad Alphas.

I started noticing them. The she-wolf who flinched when anyone raised their voice. The mother with twin pups who slept outside because she didn't trust enclosed spaces anymore. The older woman whose dead mark scar was still raw and red, weeks old, who sat by the fire every night and stared into the flames without speaking.

They were everywhere. Discarded. Invisible.

I had been one of them three days ago.

Something turned over in my chest. Not my wolf — she was still silent. Something else. The same instinct that had driven me to bleed myself dry sustaining Ironmaw's borders, the same bone-deep need to protect and shelter and hold the line.

But this time, it wasn't for a pack that didn't see me.

It was for them.

---

She arrived on the fifth night.

I was outside Tessa's shed, grinding dried valerian root in a stone mortar, when I heard the commotion near the fire pit. Raised voices. The sharp edge of fear.

I set the mortar down and walked over.

A she-wolf stood at the edge of the firelight, half-shifted and shaking. Her hands were clawed, her eyes wild and gold-rimmed, her breathing fast and shallow. Her clothes hung in tatters. The dead mark on her neck was livid — fresh, maybe hours old, the skin around it bruised and swollen.

The settlement wolves had backed away from her, forming a loose circle. Nobody moved closer.

"She's feral," someone muttered.

"She's not," I said.

I crossed the circle and sat down on the ground in front of her. Not close enough to crowd her. Just close enough.

She snarled, low and broken.

I didn't move. I just sat there, my hands loose in my lap, and waited.

Her breathing didn't slow. But she didn't lunge either.

I pressed my shoulder to hers. Gently. Just contact.

She flinched. Then stilled.

We sat like that for a long time. The fire crackled. The other wolves watched from a distance, uncertain.

Eventually, her claws retracted. Her breathing evened, fractionally. She slumped forward, her head dropping into her hands.

"I can't feel her," she whispered. Her voice was raw. "My wolf. She's gone."

"I know," I said quietly.

She looked at me. Her eyes were red-rimmed, exhausted. "How do you know?"

I touched the scar on my neck. She stared at it. Then at me.

"You're—"

"Rejected," I said. "Five days ago."

She exhaled, shaky and uneven.

"What's your name?" I asked.

"Sable," she said. "Sable Rhys."

"I'm Lorelei."

Sable's hands were still shaking. I reached over and took one, holding it steady between both of mine.

"I don't have anywhere to go," she said.

I looked at her. At the dead mark. At the exhaustion carved into every line of her face.

"Then stay," I said.

She blinked. "Here?"

"Not here," I said slowly. The thought was forming as I spoke, taking shape in the space between us. "Somewhere else. Somewhere for women like us. Women with nowhere else to go."

Sable stared at me. "You're building a pack."

I hadn't said it out loud before. But hearing it, I knew it was true.

"Yes," I said.

Sable's grip tightened on my hand. "I don't have a wolf anymore."

"Neither do I," I said. "Not right now."

She looked at me for a long moment. Then she nodded, once, sharp and certain.

"Then I'll stay," she said.

I squeezed her hand and let go.

Across the fire, Tessa was watching. She caught my eye and nodded, just slightly.

I stood and helped Sable to her feet.

Lila was still asleep in the shed. Buster was curled beside her pallet, one eye open, watching.

I looked north, into the dark trees, into the unclaimed territory that answered to no Alpha's name.

I was building something.

And this time, it would be mine.
